Electronic and Structural Properties of Interfaces in Fe∖MgO∖Cu-Phthalocyanine Hybrid Structures (Fe∖MgO∖Cu-Phthalocyanine 복합구조 계면구조와 그 전자기적 특성)

  • The influence of insertion of an ultra-thin Cu-Phthalocyanine (CuPc) between MgO barrier and ferromagnetic layer in magnetic tunnel juctions (MTJs) was investigated. In order to understand the relation between the electronic and structural properties of Fe${\backslash}$MgO${\backslash}$CuPc, the surface (or interface) analysis was carried out systematically by using spin polarized metastable He de-excited spectroscopy for the CuPc films grown on the Si(001)${\backslash}$5 nm MgO(001)${\backslash}$7 nm Fe(001)${\backslash}$1.6 nm MgO(001) multilayer structure as the thickness of CuPc increases from 0 to 5 nm. In particular, for the 1.6 nm CuPc surface, a rather strong spin asymmetry between up- and down-spin band appears while it becomes weaker or disappears for the CuPc films thinner or thicker than ~1.6 nm. Our results emphasize the importance of the interfacial electronic properties of organic layers in the spin transport of the hybrid MTJs.

Thickness Dependence of Amorphous CoSiB/Pd Multilayer with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy (비정질 강자성체 CoSiB/Pd 다층박막의 두께에 따른 수직자기이방성 변화)

  • Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is the phenomenon of magnetic thin film which is preferentially magnetized in a direction perpendicular to the film's plane. Amorphous multilayer with PMA has been studied as the good candidate to realization of high density STT-MRAM (Spin Transfer Torque-Magnetic Random Access Memory). The current issue of high density STT-MRAM is a decrease in the switching current of the device and an application of amorphous materials which are most suitable devices. The amorphous ferromagnetic material has low saturated magnetization, low coercivity and high thermal stability. In this study, we presented amorphous ferromagnetic multilayer that consists of an amorphous alloy CoSiB and a nonmagnetic material Pd. We investigated the change of PMA of the $[CoSiB\;t_{CoSiB}/Pd\;1.3nm]_5$ multilayer ($t_{CoSiB}$ = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 nm, and $t_{Pd}$ = 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 nm) and $[CoSiB\;0.3nm/Pd\;1.3nm]_n$ multilayer (n = 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13). This multilayer is measured by VSM (Vibrating Sample Magnetometer) and analyzed magnetic properties like a coercivity ($H_c$) and a magnetization ($M_s$). The coercivity in the $[CoSiB\;t_{CoSiB}\;nm/Pd\;1.3nm]_5$ multi-layers increased with increasing $t_{CoSiB}$ to reach a maximum at $t_{CoSiB}$ = 0.3 nm and then decreased for $t_{CoSiB}$ > 0.3 nm. The lowest saturated magnetization of $0.26emu/cm^3$ was obtained in the $[CoSiB\;0.3nm/Pd\;1.3nm]_3$ multilayer whereas the highest coercivity of 0.26 kOe was obtained in the $[CoSiB\;0.3nm/Pd\;1.3nm]_5$ mutilayer. Additional Pd layers did not contribute to the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The single domain structure evolved in to a striped multi-domain structure as the bilayer repetition number n was increased above 7 after which (n > 7) the hysteresis loops had a bow-tie shapes.

Leaf Shape Index, Growth, and Phytochemicals in Two Leaf Lettuce Cultivars Grown under Monochromatic Light-emitting Diodes (단색 발광다이오드에서 자란 축면상추 두 품종의 엽형, 생장 및 기능성 물질)

  • As an artificial light source, light-emitting diode (LED) with a short wavelength range can be used in closed-type plant production systems. Among various wavelength ranges in visible light, individual light spectra induce distinguishing influences on plant growth and development. In this study, we determined the effects of monochromatic LEDs on leaf shape index, growth and the accumulation of phytochemicals in a red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. 'Sunmang') and a green leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. 'Grand rapid TBR'). Lettuce seedlings grown under normal growing conditions ($20^{\circ}C$, fluorescent lamp + high pressure sodium lamp, $130{\pm}5{\mu}mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, 12 hours photoperiod) for 18 days were transferred into incubators at $20^{\circ}C$ equipped with various monochromatic LEDs (blue LED, 456 nm; green LED, 518 nm; red LED, 654 nm; white LED, 456 nm + 558 nm) under the same light intensity and photoperiod ($130{\pm}7{\mu}mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, 12 hours photoperiod). Leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots, shoot/root ratio, SPAD value, total phenolic concentration, antioxidant capacity, and the expression of a key gene involved in the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), were measured at 9 and 23 days after transplanting. The leaf shape indexes of both lettuce cultivars subjected to blue or white LEDs were similar with those of control during whole growth stage. However, red and green LEDs induced significantly higher leaf shape index than the other treatments. The green LED had a negative impact on the lettuce growth. Most of growth characteristics such as fresh and dry weights of shoots and leaf area were the highest in both cultivars subjected to red LED treatment. In case of red leaf lettuce plants, shoot fresh weight under red LED was 3.8 times higher than that under green LED at 23 days after transplanting. In contrast, the accumulation of chlorophyll, phenolics including antioxidants in lettuce plants showed an opposite trend compared with growth. SPAD value, total phenolic concentration, and antioxidant capacity of lettuce grown under blue LED were significantly higher than those under other LED treatments. In addition, PAL gene was remarkably activated by blue LED at 9 days after transplanting. Thus, this study suggested that the light quality using LEDs is a crucial factor for morphology, growth, and phytochemicals of two lettuce cultivars.

Ultra-thin aluminum thin films deposited by DC magnetron sputtering for the applications in flexible transparent electrodes (DC 마그네트론 스퍼터링법으로 증착된 초박형 Al 박막의 투명전극 적용성 연구)

  • In this study, the feasibility of Al-based transparent electrodes for optoelectronic devices was investigated. Al thin films having thickness in the range of 3-12 nm were deposited on glass substrates, and sheet resistance was measured for films thicker than 7 nm and the values continue to decrease with increasing film thickness. The grain size in the films was found to increase with increasing grain size. 85% visible light transmittance was measured at the thickness of 3 nm, and decreased to 50% and 60% when the film thickness reaches 4 nm and 5 nm, respectively. The results of this study can be used in the applications of oxide/metal/oxide type transparent electrodes.

Comparison of Result Between NM and LM (진단 검사의학과와 중복되는 검사들의 결과 비교, 분석 (TSH, $FT_4$, AFP, CEA, PSA))

  • Purpose: Nowadays, NM (in vitro lab) and LM (TLA lab) are overlaped in almost all tests. in this case, how can NM develop continually in a keen competition with LM. we studied to find out current situation and problems after comparing NM with LM. Then, to improve our technic. Methods and meterials: We studied from October 2008 to February 2009 at department of nuclear medicine Seoul National University Bundang Hospital visited 108 patients. We assayed TSH, $FT_4$ by Ria-mat{TSH (n=23), $FT_4$ (n=19)} and AFP, CEA, PSA by manual. {AFP (n=24), CEA (n=31), PSA (n=31)}. On the other hand, LM was measured by TLA system. Results: NM was similar to LM (value of AFP), NMLM (value of PSA,TSH), NM$\leqq$LM (value of $FT_4$ in range 0.01~1.00 ng/mL), NM$\geqq$LM (value of $FT_4$ in range 1.00~6.00 ng/mL) Conclusions: There was no test which result showed big difference remarkably, but several tests have some difference totally or partly. It means that there is possibility to judge wrongly (normal patient->abnormal, abnormal->normal). So, we need to consider always when we report the result.

Replacement of Normal Maize with Quality Protein Maize on Performance, Immune Response and Carcass Characteristics of Broiler Chickens

  • An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary replacement of normal maize (NM) with quality protein maize (QPM) on performance, immune response and carcass characteristics of broiler (Krishibro) chickens. Six experimental diets were prepared separately for starter and finisher phases. Diet 1 was a control diet formulated with NM and soybean meal. In diets 2-5, the NM was replaced with QPM at 25, 50, 75 and 100%, respectively. Diet 6 was the same as the control diet, but supplemented with synthetic lysine similar to the industry standard. Each test diet was fed to 8 replicates, each of 5 chicks, reared in stainless steel battery brooders. The AME content of QPM (3382 kcal/kg) was similar to that of NM (3,352 kcal/kg), but protein (9.91 vs. 8.94%), lysine (0.40 vs. 0.26%) and tryptophan (0.09 vs. 0.07%) contents of QPM were higher than NM. Dietary replacement of NM with 50% QPM significantly (p<0.05) improved body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, humoral immune response, relative bursa weight, and breast muscle yield and lowered abdominal fat content. No further improvement in these parameters was recorded by increasing the level of replacement of NM with QPM to either 75% or 100%. Further, the improvement noticed in the 50% QPM group was similar to the group fed the NM diet with lysine supplementation, and thus dietary replacement of NM with QPM at 50% did not need extra synthetic lysine supplementation. It is concluded that dietary replacement of NM with QPM at the 50% level resulted in optimum performance, higher breast muscle yield and higher immune response in broiler chickens.

Can be the dielectric constant of thin films as-grown at room temperature higher than that of its bulk material?

  • The $Bi_2Mg_{2/3}Nb_{4/3}O_7$ (BMNO)-Bi composite films sandwiched by an $Al_2O_3$ protection layer exhibited a linear increase of a dielectric constant with increasing thickness and the 1000nm-thick BMNO-Bi composite films showed a dielectric constant (~220) higher than that of its bulk material (~210), keeping a low leakage current density of about $0.1{\mu}A/cm^2$. An enhancement of the dielectric constant in the BMNO-Bi composite films was attributed to the hybrid model combined by a space charge polarization, dipolar response, and nano-capacitors. On the other hand, 1000nm-thick BMNO-Bi composite films sandwiched by 40nm-thick BMNO layer exhibited a dielectric constant of about 450 at 100 kHz and a leakage current density of $0.1{\mu}A/cm^2$ at 6V.

Effect of Fabricating Nanopatterns on GaN-Based Light Emitting Diodes by a New Way of Nanosphere Lithography

  • Nanosphere lithography is an inexpensive, simple, high-throughput nanofabrication process. NSL can be done in different ways, such as drop coating, spin coating or by means of tilted evaporation. Nitride-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are applied in different places, such as liquid crystal displays and traffic signals. The characteristics of gallium nitride (GaN)-based LEDs can be enhanced by fabricating nanopatterns on the top surface of the LEDs. In this work, we created differently sized (420, 320 and 140 nm) nanopatterns on the upper surfaces of GaN-based LEDs using a modified nanosphere lithography technique. This technique is quite different from conventional NSL. The characterization of the patterned GaN-based LEDs revealed a dependence on the size of the holes in the pattern created on the LED surface. The depths of the patterns were 80 nm as confirmed by AFM. Both the photoluminescence and electroluminescence intensities of the patterned LEDs were found to increase with an increase in the size of holes in the pattern. The light output power of the 420-nm hole-patterned LED was 1.16 times higher than that of a conventional LED. Moreover, the current-voltage characteristics were improved with the fabrication of differently sized patterns over the LED surface using the proposed nanosphere lithography method.

Charge-Transfer Complexing Properties of 1-Methyl Nicotinamide and Adenine in Relation to the Intramolecular Interaction in Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD$^+$)

  • The charge-transfer complexing properties of 1-methyl nicotinamide (MNA), an acceptor, and adenine, a donor, were investigated in water and SDS micellar solutions in relation to the intramolecular interaction in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide ($NAD^+$). The spectral and thermodynamic parameters of MNA-indole and methyl viologen-adenine complex formations were determined, and the data were utilized to evaluate the charge-transfer abilities of MNA and adenine. The electron affinity of nicotinamide was estimated to be 0.28 eV from charge-transfer energy $of{\sim}300$ nm for MNA-indole. The large enhancement of MNA-indole complexation in SDS solutions by entropy effect was attributed to hydrophobic nature of indole. The complex between adenine and methyl viologen showed an absorption band peaked near 360 nm. The ionization potential of adenine was evaluated to be 8.28 eV from this. The much smaller enhancement of charge-transfer interaction involving adenine than that of indole in SDS solutions was attributed to weaker hydrophobic nature of the donor. The charge-transfer energy of 4.41 eV (280 nm) was estimated for nicotinamide-adenine complex. The spectral behaviors of $NAD^+$ were accounted to the presence of intramolecular interaction in $NAD^+$, which is only slightly enhanced in SDS solutions. The replacement of nicotinamide-adenine interaction in $NAD^+$ by intermolecular nicotinamide-indole interaction in enzyme bound $NAD^+$, and guiding role of adenine moiety in $NAD^+$ were discussed.

  • The new method of x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) [1] is developed recently for probing the dynamics of surface height fluctuations as a function of lateral length scale. Measurements were performed on supported polystyrene (PS) films of thicknesses varying from 84 to 333 nm at temperatures above the PS glass transition temperature. Within a range of wave vectors spanning $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}$ $nm^{-1}$, good agreement is found between the measured surface dynamics and the theory of overdamped thermal capillary waves on thin films. Quantitatively, the data can be accounted for using the viscosity of bulk PS. (omitted)
