  • This paper introduces an active sensing node using radio-frequency (RF) telemetry. This device has brought the traditional impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technique to a new paradigm. The RF active sensing node consists of a miniaturized impedance measuring device (AD5933), a microcontroller (ATmega128L), and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (XBee). A macro-fiber composite (MFC) patch interrogates a host structure by using a self-sensing technique of the miniaturized impedance measuring device. All the process including structural interrogation, data acquisition, signal processing, and damage diagnostic is being performed at the sensor location by the microcontroller. The RF transmitter is used to communicate the current status of the host structure. The feasibility of the proposed SHM strategy is verified through an experimental study inspecting loose bolts in a bolt-jointed aluminum structure.

  • Security is crucial for the successful deployment of large distributed systems. Many of these systems provide services to people across different administrative domains. The traditional identity-based access control mechanisms are un scalable and difficult to manage. Unlike the closed systems, open systems provide services to people from different security domains. Healthcare systems need to be highly available in order for the patients to get a timely treatment. The health care information should be available to authorized users both inside the administrative domain and outside the domain, such as pharmacies and insurance companies. In this paper, we first analyzed the necessities and advantages of importing attribute-based trust-management models into open distributed systems. Then we reviewed traditional access-control models and presented the basic elements of the new trust-management model.

  • Streptococcus mutans causes oral diseases, including tooth decay, by producing a biofilm called plaque. Therefore, inhibition of biofilm formation is essential for maintaining oral health. Plants produce a variety of secondary metabolites, which act as starting sources for the discovery of new bioactive chemicals that inhibit biofilm formation of S. mutans. Previous studies have reported on chemicals with antibiotic activity for the inhibition of biofilm formation by S. mutans. In this study, nine plant extracts from Melonis Pedicellus, Agastachis Herba, Mori Cortex Radicis, Diospyros kaki leaves, Agrimoniae Herba, Polygoni Multiflori Radix, Lycopi Herba, Elsholtziae Herba, and Schizonepetae Spica were screened for the inhibition of biofilm formation from a plant extract library. The water-soluble compounds of the extracts did not affect cell growth but selectively inhibited biofilm formation. These results suggest that the selected plant extracts constitute novel biofilm formation inhibitors, with a novel biological mechanism, for improving oral hygiene.

  • In conclusion, tremendous potential exists for the application of animal biotechnology to the beef industry, especially with the utilization of embryo cloning to produce genetically identical animals and genetic engineering to modify animal genomes to improve and /or create new phenotypes for many economically important traits. Research involving embryo cloning and genetic engineering of animals has been continuous now for over a decade, however inefficiencies in techniques have prevented large scale application. large numbers of identical cattle will some day be produced and producers will be utilizing transgenic cattle in their beef production programs.

  • Three t-amines, 4-(dimethylamino)benzoic acid (ABA), 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde (MBA), 4-(dimethylamino)benzophenone (MBP), were investigated as new visible light photoinitiators for a dental resin composite of UDMA in order to improve photopolymerization effect. Three t-amines mixed with three photosensiizers, CQ, PD and DA, respectively. And the photopolymerization effect of photoinitiators were compared with that of 4-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (AEM), the most widely used photoinitiator. The photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA containing the photoinitiator increased with irradiation time. The increase was in the order: MBP

  • Ti-20%Zr-X%Cr(X=0,5) based alloys not containing hamful Al and V were newly designed in order to reveal their possibility for dental casting alloys, and melted in argon-arc casting machine. The mechanical properties were evaluated by using universal testing machine. The tensile strength and %elongaton of the alloys markedly increased with Cr content. The Ti-20%Zr-5%Cr alloy showed a similar tendency with Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy in tensile strength, but surpassed in %elongation. From these results, it was concluded that new alloys for successful dental casting materials should be designed as Ti-Zr-Cr based alloys.

  • There is great demand of nutraceutical secondary metabolites in the world so as to feed the population by improving agricultural production with new varieties of food crops but what is still more important is to add nutrition into the food. Physalis minima, plant of Solanaceae family, contain certain secondary metabolites which enhance the over all metabolic functions of the body. Withasteroids are one of such phytochemicals that are generally regarded as safe. These chemicals are almost monopoly of the plants of Solanaceae. The leaves, stem and roots of P. minima have been examined to yield several steroids, identification of which has been discussed in this paper. These withasteroids contribute to the potential nutraceutical and health function value since incorporation of withanolides in the diet may prevent or decrease the growth of tumors in humans.

  • Dual-actions are the most recently used delivery system in drug study. Dual-action agents are unique chemical entities comprised of two different type of antibacterial compounds covalently linked together in a single molecule in such a way that both components are able to exert their bactericidal properties. Crosslinked sulfadiazine-sulfanilamide such as antibiotics is synthesized by synthetic handle with glutaraldehyde. As a result, New synthetic antibacterial agent exhibited the broad antibacterial activities against gram(+) and gram(-) of 4 strains and a long durability supposing that the stomach and blood.

  • In this paper, an hybrid automatic focusing method has been proposed for speedy and reliable measurement and inspection in industry. It can improve reliability of focusing position by using not a focusing measure but the hybrid one that is incorporated with sobel operator and auto-correlation. Also, it can not only reduce control time of focusing position using adaptive step size, but also improve accuracy of focusing position by gaussian interpolation. Its performance is verified by experiments. It is expected that it can apply to optical system for measurement and inspection in industry fields.
