  • A variety of complications in endoscopic third ventriculostomy have been reported, including neurovascular injury, hemodynamic alterations, endocrinologic abnormalities, electrolyte imbalances, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, fever and infection. Even though most complications are transient, the overall rate of permanent morbidity is 2.38% and the overall mortality rate is 0.28%. To avoid these serious complications, we should keep in mind potential complications and how to prevent them. Proper decisions with regard to surgical indication, choice of endoscopic entry and trajectory, careful endoscopic procedures with anatomic orientation, bleeding control and tight closure are emphasized for the prevention of complications.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the sedative effects of ethanol extract and the three major constituents of Cimicifugae Rhizoma. They decreased locomotor activity significantly, and enhanced sleeping duration induced by thiopental sodium. The ethanol extract of Cimicifugae rhizoma and 24-epi-7,8-didehydrocimigenol-3-xyloside (24-epi.) increased the $Cl^-$ influx into the intracellular area of SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells significantly. The present results demonstrate that the sedative effects of Cimicifugae rhizoma are mediated via the GABA-gated $Cl^-$ channel, partly by 24-epi.

  • The aim of this study was to find optimal ratio of herbal extracts to ameliorate ethanol-induced psychomotor alterations. Four mixtures of Laurus nobilis (L. nobilis), Rosa roxburghii (R.R.) and Opuntia ficus indica (OFI) were pretreated 30 minutes before ethanol administration in rats. Behavioral activities were evaluated. Blood ethanol and acetaldehyde levels were also measured. These effects of mixture of R.R (50 mg/kg)+OFI (100 mg/kg)+L.nobilis (100 mg/kg) were better than those of other mixtures. This mixture could be used as an effective substance to develop a functional food.

  • ■ Objectives The goal of this study is to find the correlation between the motor function and gait pattern of stroke patients. ■ Methods We measured Manual muscle test(MMT), Motricity index(MI) and Spatiotemporal gait parameters of admitted hemiplegic patients with stroke. The gait parameters were measured using a Treadmill gait system. ■ Results There is a significant correlation between motor function and spatiotemporal parameters such as step length, stride length, step time, stride time, total double support or cadence, in stroke patients. ■ Conclusion The better motor function of stroke was, the more gait improved.

  • Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a signaling lipid that binds to six known lysophosphatidic acid receptors (LPARs), named $LPA_1-LPA_6$. These receptors initiate signaling cascades relevant to development, maintenance, and healing processes throughout the body. The diversity and specificity of LPA signaling, especially in relation to cancer and autoimmune disorders, makes LPA receptor modulation an attractive target for drug development. Several LPAR-specific analogues and small molecules have been synthesized and are efficacious in attenuating pathology in disease models. To date, at least three compounds have passed phase I and phase II clinical trials for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and systemic sclerosis. This review focuses on the promising therapeutic directions emerging in LPA signaling toward ameliorating several diseases, including cancer, fibrosis, arthritis, hydrocephalus, and traumatic injury.

  • Most organisms have adapted to a circadian rhythm that follows a roughly 24-hour cycle, which is modulated by both internal (clock-related genes) and external (environment) factors. In such organisms, the central nervous system (CNS) is influenced by the circadian rhythm of individual cells. Furthermore, the period circadian clock 2 (Per2) gene is an important component of the circadian clock, which modulates the circadian rhythm. Per2 is mainly expressed in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus as well as other brain areas, including the midbrain and forebrain. This indicates that Per2 may affect various neurobiological activities such as sleeping, depression, and addiction. In this review, we focus on the neurobiological functions of Per2, which could help to better understand its roles in the CNS.

  • We report a case of hydrocephalus in a 8-year-old boy who presented bilateral hand tremor. The hydrocephalus was caused by the aqueductal stenosis due to expanding lacunae in the mesencephalothalamic area on MR findings. The tremor was improved after CSF drainage by spinal tap and ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The authors present the possible mechanism of hydrocephalus induced tremor.

  • Long-term potentiation (LTP) at hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapses is often associated with increases in quantal size, traditionally attributed to enhanced availability or efficacy of postsynaptic glutamate receptors. However, augmented quantal size might also reflect increases in neurotransmitter concentration within the synaptic cleft since AMPA-type glutamate receptors are not generally saturated during basal transmission. Here we report evidence that peak cleft glutamate concentration $([glu]_{cleft})$ increases during LTP, as indicated by a lessening of the blocking effects of rapidly unbinding antagonists of AMPA. The efficacy of slowly equilibrating antagonists remained unchanged. The elevated $[glu]_{cleft}$ helps support the increased quantal amplitude of AMPA-type EPSCs (excitatory postsynaptic currents) during LTP.
