  • A cold cathode flourescent lamp for the backlight in the notebook computer requires high input voltage about 1300(V) when it turns on. But once a discharge starts, the input voltage can be dropped by about one-third for continued output. The equivalent impedance also varies from open to several dozens of kilo-ohms. The piezoelectric transformer converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and then converts it back to electrical energy at a high voltage. Its high output voltage, high efficiency and small size are suitable for driving the LCD backlight in the notebook computer. The piezoelectric transformer operates near the resonance frequency and the output waveform is close to sine wave with very little noise. This paper suggests an inverter for LCD backlight of notebook computer using piezoelectric transformer that includes voltage to frequency converter for gate signal which is useful for tracking of variable resonance frequency depending on load impedance.

  • In this study, we introduce a sensing platform based on a plasmonic metasurface absorber (MA) with a vertical nanogap for the ultrasensitive detection of monolayer molecules. The vertical nanogap of the MA, where the extremely high near-field is uniformly distributed and exposed to the external environment, is formed by an under-cut structure between a metallic cross nanoantenna and the mirror layer. The accessible sensing area and the enhanced near-field of the MA further enhance the sensitivity of surface-enhanced infrared absorption for the target molecule of 1-octadecanethiol. To provide strong coupling between the molecular vibrations and plasmonic resonance, the design parameters of the MA with a vertical nanogap are numerically designed.

  • Medical image compression using the wavelet transform has been tried. Due to the flexibility in representing nonstationary image signal in both time and frequency domains and its ability to adapt human visual characteristics, wavelet transform has unique advantage in images compression. In the proposed wavelet compression original image is decomposed into multi-scale bands. Different scale factors are employed in the quantization of wavelet decomposed images in different bands. For the lowest band, a predictor is designed and error signal is entropy coded. For high scale bands, runlength coding for toro run is used with Huffman coding. From simulation with magnetic resonance images($256\times256$ size, 256 graylevels) the proposed algorithm is superior to the JPEG by more than 2.5 dB in near lossless compression (CR = 8 - 10).

  • Quantum mechanical analysis is presented for the photodissociation dynamics of the v'=4 levels of the $A^2Σ^+$ state of the OH molecule. We focus on the effects of the multichannel interactions between the asymptotically degenerate states in the recoupling region to see how they affect the dynamics near the predissociating resonances. Both the scalar (total cross section and branching ratios) and the vector properties (angular distributions and alignment parameters) of O($^3P_j, j=0, 1, 2) are treated. The resonances are predicted to be highly Lorentzian, and the branching ratios do not change much across them. Vector properties, however, show very delicate effects of the multichannel interactions and overlapping near the isolated and overlapping resonances. Computed resonance lifetimes agree reasonably well with experimental results.

  • We present an analysis of highly-dispersive guided modes of two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides. By the plane ave expansion method, band structures and mode profiles of two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides are obtained. It is found that guided modes have very small group velocities and very large group velocity dispersions in the region near the f-point and in the region near the Brillouin zone edge. Especially, the group velocity dispersions are found to be millions of times larger than that of a conventional optical fiber. The contributions of the transverse resonance formed by two photonic band gap reflectors and the standing wave mode formed by periodic structures are discussed. We conclude that the highly-dispersive characteristics originate from the resonator-like aspect of the photonic crystal waveguide.

  • Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, which is, in the cosmological context, attributed to its simplest structure consisting of a proton and an electron. Hydrogen interacts with an electromagnetic wave in astrophysical environments. Rayleigh scattering refers to elastic scattering, where the frequencies of the incident and scattered photons are the same. Rayleigh and resonance scattering is a critical role study Lyman Alpha objects in the early universe. The scattering causes the frequency and spatial diffusion of Lyα. In the case of Raman scattering, the energies of the incident and scattered photons are different. The photons near Lyβ convert to the optical photons near Hα through Raman scattering. The photon scattered by atomic hydrogen can carry both of the properties of the H I region and the emission region. I adopt a Monte Carlo approach to investigate the formation of the various spectral line features through Rayleigh and Raman scattering in highly thick media of atomic hydrogen. In this thesis, I present my works on radiative transfer involving the scattering processes between far UV photon and atomic hydrogen. I introduce scattering processes with atomic hydrogen and the spectral, spatial, and polarized information originating from the scattering.

  • A design procedure for microstrip bandpass filters using step impedance resonators (SIR's) and tapped input/output to a conventional parallel coupled line bandpass filter is presented. The filter configuration consisting of both half-wavelength and SIR's suppreses to spurious resonance response near the second harmonics, while tapping techniques offer benefit in situations where the impractical. The measured frequency responses of the designed filter are in close agreement with the computed responses.

  • An investigation into asymmetric vibrations of a clamped circular plate under a hannonic excitation is made. We examine a primary resonance, in which the frequency of excitation is near the natural frequency of an asymmetric mode of the plate. We found not only a response having the form of standing wave but also one having the form of traveling wave, which was not observed by Sridhar, Mook and Nayfeh(1978; Journal of Sound and Vibration 59(2), pp. 159-170).

  • We consider electromagnetic field radiation properties of a current filament placed at the origin of a cylindrical frequency selective surface (CFSS). The CFSS consists of free standing metal strips with two-dimensional periodicity. The analysis is based on a cylindrical Floquet mode wave expansion technique. We observed that near the half wavelength resonance frequencies, there exist some specific frequencies at which the surface becomes totally transparent.

  • The influence of nonlinear phenomena on the behavior of stationary forced flexural-gravity waves on the surface of deep water is investigated, when the perturbation of external pressure moves with near-resonant velocity. It is shown that there are three branches of bounded stationary solutions turning into asymptotic solutions of the linear problem with zero initial conditions. For the first time ice sheet destruction by turbulent fluctuations of atmosphere pressure in ice adjacent layer in wind conditions is studied.
