  • Vibration characteristics of an duel-cooling cylindrical fuel rod, which was proposed as a candidate design of fuel's cross section for the ultra-high burnup nuclear fuel, according to the cross-sectional dimensions and the number of supports or the span length were analytically studied. Finite element(FE) modeling for the annular cross sectional fuel was based on the methodology, that have been proven by the test verification, for the conventional PWR nuclear fuel rod. A commercial FEA code, ABAQUS, was used for the FE modeling and analysis. A planar beam element (B21) that uses a linear interpolation was used for the fuel rod and a linear spring element for the spring and dimple of the SG. Natural frequencies and mode shape were calculated according to the preliminary design candidates for the fuel's cross sectional dimension and the number of span. From the analysis results, the design scheme of the annular fuel compatible to the present PWR nuclear reactor core was discussed in terms of the number of supports and fuel's cross section.

  • Human infections due to the monkey malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi is increasingly being reported from most Southeast Asian countries specifically Malaysia. The parasite causes severe and fatal malaria thus there is a need for urgent measures for its control. In this study, the level of polymorphisms, haplotypes and natural selection of full-length pkmsp8 in 37 clinical samples from Malaysian Borneo along with 6 lab-adapted strains were investigated. Low levels of polymorphism were observed across the full-length gene, the double epidermal growth factor (EGF) domains were mostly conserved, and non-synonymous substitutions were absent. Evidence of strong negative selection pressure in the non-EGF regions were found indicating functional constrains acting at different domains. Phylogenetic haplotype network analysis identified shared haplotypes and indicated geographical clustering of samples originating from Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. This is the first study to genetically characterize the full-length msp8 gene from clinical isolates of P. knowlesi from Malaysia; however, further functional characterization would be useful for future rational vaccine design.

  • The olfactory anatomy and histology of Lethenteron reissneri were researched using a stereo microscope, a light microscope, and a scanning electron microscope. As in other lampreys, it shows same characters as follows: i) a single olfactory organ, ii) a single tubular nostril, iii) a single olfactory chamber with gourd-like form, iv) a nasal valve, v) a nasopharyngeal pouch, vi) a sensory epithelium (SE) of continuous distribution, vii) a supporting cells with numerous long cilia, viii) an accessory olfactory organ. However, the description of a pseudostratified columnar layer in the SE and Non SE is a first record, not reported in sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus. In particular, both 19 to 20 lamellae in number and olfactory receptor neuron's quarter ciliary length of the knob diameter differ from those of P. marinus. From these results, it might be considered that the olfactory organ of L. reissneri shows well adaptive structure of a primitive fish to slow flowing water with gravel, pebbles, and sand and a hiding habit into sand bottom at daytime. The lamellar number and neuron's ciliary length may be a meaningful taxonomic character for the class Petromyzonida.

  • A Korean isolate of Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV-Kr) was isolated from a diseased pepper crop in Chunchon, Korea. The isolate was biologically purified on Nicoticaa tabacum cv. Xanthi-nc by successive single local transfer steps, and propagated on N. tabacum cv. Samsun. PMMoV-Kr could systemically infect on N. glauca, N. benthmiana, N. occidentalis and Lycopersicon esculentum, which is typical of known isolates of PMMoV. PMMoV-Kr belongs to the pathotype P1,2 based on pepper-tobamoviral indicator experiments; Capsicn chinone harboring L3 gene revealed resistant (necrotic local lesion on inoculated leaf, HR) whereas L+, L1 and L2 pepper plants expressed susceptible reactions of mosaic systemic symptoms for the isolate. To confirm the pathology and delineate symptom determinant of the isolate, full-length cDNAs of PMMoV-Kr were amplified by RT-PCR with a primer set corresponding to the 5'- and 3'-ends of PMMoV. The RT-PCR molecules amplified from genome RNA of the isolate was cloned into the pUC18 vector. Full-length cDNA clones constructed under the control of the T7 RNA promoter could be successfully transcribed to produce in vitro transcript RNA. Infectivity of the capped transcripts and its progeny virus was verified by Western blot and RT-PCR analyses.

  • For a mesa-isolated small geometry SOI MOSFET, the potentials in the silicon film, front, back, and side-wall oxide layers can be derived three-dimensionally. Using Taylor's series expansions of the trigonometric functions, the derived potentials are written in terms of the natural length that can be determined by using the derived formula. From the derived 3-D potentials, the minimum values of the front and the back surface potentials are derived and used to obtain the closed-form expressions for the front and back gate threshold voltages as functions of various device parameters and applied bias voltages. Obtained results can be found to explain the drain-induced threshold voltage roll-off and the narrow width effect of a fully depleted small geometry SOI MOSFET in a unified manner.

  • An unconstrained tuning fork with a 3-D model has been numerically analyzed by Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM). The first three natural frequencies were calculated by the FEM modal analysis. Then the trend of the change of the modal frequencies was examined with the variation of the tuning fork length and width. An formula for the natural frequencies-tuning fork length relationship were derived from the numerical analysis results. Finally the BEM was used for the sound pressure field calculation from the structural displacement data.

  • The Doryon-Line is the lowest line of the Chechori and Dangeu and the length of the Chechori and the Dangeu have wide influence on the Doryon-Line. Also the change of the Doryon-Line is re-lated to the proportion the length the depth that is the curved proportion and the two curved proportion 0.04 and 0.13 are related to the roof style of the traditional architecture in Chosun Dynasty. The Chosun people have made a change the Doryon-Line monotonous in the 14C-15C but the Doryon-Line have been full of variety every fifty years in the 15C-18C. Especially Chosun people have been at war in the mountains and fields in the Doryon-Line are 0.06 and 0.07 in this period I think that the curved proportion 0.06 and 0.07 are symbolized the natural beauty in the mountains and trees of the Korea.
