N,N-Dimethyl-D-ribo-phytosphingosine (DMPH) is an N-methyl derivative of sphingosine. In the present paper, we studied effects of DMPH on intracellular Ca$^{2+}$ concentration, pH, glutamate uptake, and cell viability in human 1321N1 astrocytes. DMPH increased intracellular Ca$^{2+}$ concentration and cytosolic pH significantly in a dose-dependent manner. DMPH also inhibited glutamate uptake by 1321N1 astrocytes. Finally, treatment of cells with DMPH for 24 h reduced viability of cells largely and concentration-dependently. In summary, DMPH increased intracellular Ca$^{2+}$ concentration and pH, inhibited glutamate uptake and evoked cytotoxicity in 1321N1 astrocytes. Our observations with DMPH in the 1321N1 astrocytes would enhance understanding of DMPH actions in the brain.

Porphyromonas gingivalis, a foremost periodontal pathogen, has been known to cause periodontal diseases. Epidemiologic evidences have indicated the involvement of P. gingivalis in the development of cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we show that the P. gingivalis lipopolysaccharide increases the mRNA expression and protein secretion of interleukin-6 in vascular smooth muscle cells. We demonstrate that P. gingivalis LPS activates the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and Akt, which mediate the IL-6 expression in vascular smooth muscle cells. Also, P. gingivalis LPS stimulates the vascular smooth muscle cell migration, which is a critical step for the progression of atherosclerosis. Moreover, neutralization of the IL-6 function inhibits the migration of vascular smooth muscle cells induced by P. gingivalis LPS. Taken together, these results indicate that P. gingivalis LPS promotes the expression of IL-6, which in turn increases the migration of vascular smooth muscle cells.

Previously, we identified albumin as an inhibitory factor in serum for cell adhesion of T cells such as human Jurkat T and primary cultured human T cells. In the present study, we found that other hematopoietic cell lines including U-937 human monocytes, THP-1 human monocytes, K-562 promyelocytic leukemia cells, and HL-60 human leukemia cells, also adhere to tissue culture flasks when serum is withdrawn, and albumin exerts an inhibitory effect on cell adhesion by those cells, implying that this inhibition is a common phenomenon in hematopoietic cells. Furthermore, we found that cell adhesion is inhibited by antioxidants such as (-)-epigallocatechin- 3-gallate (EGCG), morin, and a-tocopherol. Our results suggest that albumin may inhibit basal cell adhesion of hematopoietic cells and that the oxidative balance in the plasma may be important for cell adhesion of hematopoietic cells in vivo.

In the case of failed fixed implant prosthesis accompanied by abutment screw fracture, fractured screw fragment must be removed to use the existing implant fixtures. A 61-year-old male patient, who had a failed maxillary fixed implant prosthesis accompanied by three abutment screw fracture, hoped to reconstruct the maxillary implant prosthesis, while maintaining the existing implant fixtures. To use the existing implant fixtures, fractured screw fragments were removed. A maxillary implant overdenture using available existing implants was planned. Bar-attachment with Locator was used for implant splinting, denture stability, and retention. Final impression was taken after treatment of peri-implantitis. Jaw relation registration was taken to evaluate available interarch space for bar-attachment. After fabricating bar-attachment, centric relation was taken. Implant overdenture using bar-attachment with Locator was delivered after wax-denture evaluation. This case report showed that a satisfactory clinical result was achieved by implant overdenture using existing implant fixtures in a maxillary edentulous patient.

HemoHIM, herbal preparation has designed for immune system recovery. We investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of HemoHIM on cigarette smoke (CS) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) mouse model. To induce COPD, C57BL/6 mice were exposed to CS for 1 h per day (eight cigarettes per day) for 4 weeks and intranasally received LPS on day 26. HemoHIM was administrated to mice at a dose of 50 or 100 mg/kg 1h before CS exposure. HemoHIM reduced the inflammatory cell count and levels of tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNF)-${\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-$1{\beta}$ in the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) induced by CS+LPS exposure. HemoHIM decreased the inflammatory cell infiltration in the airway and inhibited the expression of iNOS and MMP-9 and phosphorylation of Erk in lung tissue exposed to CS+LPS. In summary, our results indicate that HemoHIM inhibited a reduction in the lung inflammatory response on CS and LPS induced lung inflammation via the Erk pathway. Therefore, we suggest that HemoHIM has the potential to treat pulmonary inflammatory disease such as COPD.

The existing standard cost of project management of empowerment sector in general rural development project has problems with standard cost system without considering characteristics of empowerment project and unclear division of works. These problems are a lot of trouble to fulfill the project. Thus, it needs an arrangement of standard cost considering detailed characteristics of project management in the empowerment sector. The contents and results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1) To set accurate standard cost, we carried out three-step processes, such as elicitation of standard works, calculation of workload and determination of standard cost. (1) In an investigation of 30 rural area dividing 8 parts about an workload of empowerment project, an average workload is 1,499 hours. (2) Based on this results, the standard cost is calculated at 15% of project cost in over 600 million won, at 28.75% of project cost in under 500 million won, by standards of empowerment project cost. 2) It set the responsibility management cost to 15% of empowerment project cost considering existing awareness, workload and work professionalism of project management. Based on the results, It suggested the practical use as basis for efficient management of the future empowerment projects. To achieve this, It needs to promote maximizing results on the whole project through the legalization processes including amendment of existing regulations.

In diverse professional fields including information and communication field, there is huge gap between required practical ability in industrial and that of graduated students actually learn in university. In this paper, we propose collaborative project curriculum applied to project-based learning in order to train affordable specialists who have a systematic problem-solving ability in industrial site. Applying this curriculum to The Cultural Technology Education Center of Jeju National University, we confirm that our curriculum improves ability of students to perform team project systematically such as skills in paper writing, presentation speech, problem solving, and collaborative work. Students are also reported high satisfaction about the proposed curriculum. Therefore, we expect that our curriculum will successfully be applied to other fields.

This work firstly aims to analyse how the policy makers had been able to sort out the two policy issues, 'how did the MOST establish the inter-departmental project' and 'why did the MOST give a legal power to the private experts', in the process of policy making for Highly Advanced National(HAN) project, called G7 Project, which had been implemented for 10 years in 1990s. Then, this will discuss the policy implications available to the similar policy areas in the future. The result shows that the agenda setting of the G7 Project, one of the successful national R&D projects in Korea, had been initiated by a few leaders who had have the perspective of pioneer. In addition, this explains that private experts had more played than civil servant did in the process of policy formation, which had been backed up by the R&D plannin4g system then introduced in R&D management process for the frist time. This case study will provide policy makers with the opportunities to remind 'the necessities of the policy management by the system not actors', 'more effective management of distribution policy' and 'the better role of related experts in the policy making process'. Also, above issues will make both the practitioners and the researchers again consider how to improve the rationality and effectiveness of the policy making process in the field of science and technology.

This study aimed to analyze the economic effectiveness on environment improvement project that has been implemented in five fishing grounds of Taean-gun which had been damaged by the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident. In the analysis, first, this study performed the survey on residents perceptions about the environment improvement project. Second, the cost-benefit analysis was carried out to evaluate the economic effectiveness of the project. The survey results of residents perceptions indicated that the damage of oil spill was considerable in the target areas. It also showed that residents wanted to continue the environment improvement project and the levels of project satisfaction were quitely high. The economic results showed that 3 areas(Woong-do, Wang-san, and Dang-mi) would have positive values of NPV and B/C ratio, but the other(Nu-dong) would have negative values. The findings of this analysis could be used as the base data for increasing operational efficiency of future environment improvement projects.

Recently the Government has classified the construction specifications into three types such as national standard specifications, owner's standard specifications and project specifications, by the revision of the Law of Construction Technology Management. And the Government provided that project owner shall use the project specifications that are written by excerption from, revision of, and supplement to the national standard specifications or the owner's standard specitications etc.. The present study suggests the writing way of national standard specifications, owner's standard specifications and project specifications in these situations.
