In the present work, the impact loads and their effects on the surface damage under the simultaneous cavitation bubble and solid particle collapses in the sea water have been quantitatively investigated for the austenitic 304 stainless steel by using a vibratory cavitation test device. To do this, angular $SiO_2$ solid particles with an average size of $150{\mu}m$ were dispersed into the test liquid, and the measured impact amplitudes were converted into the impact loads by a steel ball drop test. The maximum impact load was determined to be 28.2 N in the absence of solid particles, but increased to 33.7 N in the presence of solid particles. In addition, the critical impact loads, $L_{crit}$, required to generate pits with sizes greater than $3{\mu}m$ were measured to be 19.6 N and 16.6 N, respectively, for the cavitation bubble collapse and solid particle collapse. As a result of the cavitation erosion test, the incubation time and erosion rate were 1.2 times lower and 1.5 times higher, respectively, by a solid particle collapse compared to those only by the cavitation bubble collapse, indicating a drastic decrease in a resistance to cavitation erosion by the solid particle collapse.
The effects of column length and particle size on the efficiency of separation and characterization of phospholipids (PLs) are investigated using nanoflow liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (nLC-ESI-MS-MS). Since PLs are associated with cell proliferation, apoptosis, and signal transduction, it is of increasing interests in lipidomics to establish reliable analytical methods for the qualitative and quantitative profiling of PLs related to biomarker development in adult diseases. Due to the complexity of PLs, the preliminary separation of PLs is necessary prior to MS analysis. In this study, length of capillary column and the particle size of reversed phase ($C_{18}$) packing materials are varied to find a reliable condition for the high speed and high resolution separation using 8 PL standard mixtures. From experiments, it was found that a capillary column of nLC-ESI-MS-MS analysis for PL mixtures can be minimized to a 5 cm long pulled tip column packed with 3 ${\mu}m$$C_{18}$ particles without losing resolution.
This study describes effects of DME additives on combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics including nano-particle in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Considered additives include bio-diesel, n-butanol, and MTBE for increasing kinematic viscosity. Among three additives, n-butanol showed the greatest kinematic viscosity. In addition MTBE showed the highest vapor pressure. In the present study mixing ratios of additives were kept constant at 1 and 10% by volume. Experiments were performed at 1200rpm engine speed and nano-particles were measured by SMPS (Scanning mobility particle sizer) devices. Results of combustion characteristics showed that considered additives had little effects on combustion pressure. However, patterns of heat release rate were dependent on properties of additives. Nano-particles of MTBE were the lowest among considered additives.
The effect of the isocyanate index (NCO index) on the particle size and particle size distribution of a waterborne polyurethane dispersion (WPUD) with polycarbonate-diol was determined. The WPUDs were prepared using a conventional acetone process with polycarbonate-polyol (Mn = 2028), 4,4'-methylenebis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) (H12MDI), 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (DMPA), and dibutyltin dilaurate catalyst. At NCO index values below 1.5, the number average particle diameter of the WPUDs significantly increased with the NCO index, whereas the particle diameter slightly varied at higher NCO indexes. The dependency of the WPUD viscosity on the NCO index exhibited similar behavior to that of the particle size. The relative values of the full width at half maximum of the WPUD particle distribution curves at various NCO indexes were not influenced by the NCO index.
The aim of this study was to investigate the influencing factors that characterize low density lipoprotein (LDL) phenotype and the levels of LDL particle size in healthy Korean women. In 57 healthy Korean women (mean age, $57.4{\pm}13.1$ yrs), anthropometric and biochemical parameters such as lipid profiles and LDL particle size were measured. Dietary intake was estimated by a developed semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The study subjects were divided into two groups: LDL phenotype A (mean size: $269.7{\AA}$, n = 44) and LDL phenotype B (mean size: $248.2{\AA}$, n = 13). Basic characteristics were not significantly different between the two groups. The phenotype B group had a higher body mass index, higher serum levels of triglyceride, total-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein (apo)B, and apoCIII but lower levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and LDL particle size than those of the phenotype A group. LDL particle size was negatively correlated with serum levels of triglyceride (r = -0.732, $P$ < 0.001), total-cholesterol, apoB, and apoCIII, as well as carbohydrate intake (%En) and positively correlated with serum levels of HDL-cholesterol and ApoA1 and fat intake (%En). A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis revealed that carbohydrate intake (%En) and serum triglyceride levels were the primary factors influencing LDL particle size ($P$ < 0.001, $R^2$ = 0.577). This result confirmed that LDL particle size was closely correlated with circulating triglycerides and demonstrated that particle size is significantly associated with dietary carbohydrate in Korean women.

One of the important problems in recent AC-PDP technology is the image sticking. In this research, we have investigated the PDP cell with constraint deposition MgO on phosphor, the electrical and optical properties in the PDP cell were examined. Also, we have investigated the correlation with image sticking and degraded MgO protective layer, phosphor in AC-PDP. As a result, we measured the secondary electron emission coefficient ${\gamma}$, discharge characteristics and Brightness for the constraint degraded phosphor are compared with those of nondegraded phosphor.
The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between the plasma LDL particle size and blood lipid profile, dietary factors and anthropometric values (body mass index, waist circumference and waist/hip ratio). The subjects were 173 adults aged 23 to 81 years, selected from the Outpatient Clinic and Cardiovascular Department of the Seoul Municipal Hospital. Dietary data were obtained using a 3-day food record and analyzed using Korean and US nutrient databases. The subjects were divided into three groups by LDL particle size : type A (large buoyant LDL, > 25.5 nm, n=96), type I (Intermediate LDL,$25.2\leq-\leq25.5$ nm, n=18), and type B (small dense LDL, < 25.2 nm, n=59) groups. The type B group had higher age, waist circumference, and waist/hip ratio (WHR) than the type A and type I groups. Serum concentration of triglyceride, Apo B, LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio and atherogenic index were significantly higher in the type B group as compared to those in the other two groups. HDL cholesterol level and Apo A-I/Apo B ratio were significantly lower in the type B group than the other two groups. The plasma LDL particle size was highly correlated with triglyceride (r= -0.450), Apo B (r= -0.402) and HDL cholesterol (r= 0.418). However, there was no correlation between plasma LDL particle size and dietary intakes. This study showed that small dense LDL was an important biochemical risk factor that was associated with other risk factors.
Doping effects and semiconductor behaviors of the dispersed p- and n-Si, p- and n- GaAs particles in the aqueous electrolyte have been studied using microelectrophoretic, voltammetric and chronoamperometric techniques. The cations (K$^{+}$) are adsorbed on both the p- and n- Si particle surfaces regardless of the sign of space charges in the depletion layers, i.e. doping profiles. The surface states are negatively charged acceptor states. On the other hand, the anions (CI$^{-}$) are adsorbed on both the p- and n- GaAs particle surfaces regardless of the sign of space charges in the depletion layers, i.e. doping profiles. The surface states are positively charged donor states. Under the same conditions, electrophoretic mobilities, electrochemical processes, doping effects and related semiconductor behaviors of the Si and the GaAs particles are similar regardless of the doping profiles, i. e. dopants and doping concentrations. The doping effects and related semiconductor behaviors of the dispersed p- and n- type semiconductor particles are gradually lost with decreasing dimensions.

Amorphous GaN Quantum dots(a-GaN QDs) with particle diameters less than bohr radius(~11nm) were successfully fabricated at room temperature by a laser ablation of high densified GaN target. Transmission electron microscopy, SAED diffraction pattern and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of a-GaN QDs with particle size of 7.9, 6.9, 4.4nm under the Ar gas pressures of 50, 100 and 200 Pa, respectively. The room temperature PL and absorbance spectra showed a strong band emission centered at 3.9 eV in a-GaN QDs made under the gas pressures of 100 and 200 Pa, which is nearly 0.5eV blueshifted with respect to the bulk crystal band gap.
