  • Transient currents were measured in nematic liquid-crystal cells with and without doping of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Comparative results suggest that the field-screening effect induced by the adsorbed charge is substantially suppressed by the carbon-nanotube dopant, leading to a reduction of the driving voltage and improved performance of display properties.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was grafted onto the multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) using ultrasound in water and modified MWCNT/PVA nanocomposite was prepared. Modified MWCNT had a good affinity with PVA matrix and showed improved dispersion state along with uniform properties. Therefore, the electrical percolation threshold was observed at 0.1 wt% MWCNT. 3.0 wt% modified MWCNT/PVA composite had 50% higher tensile strength, 430% higher elongation at break, and 100% greater modulus. Since the modified MWCNT acted as a nucleation agent, the crystallization temperature increased to $8.5^{\circ}C$ and the crystallinity increased to 11.5% at 5.0 wt% loading concentration.

  • To improve the performance of ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators, Nafion films sandwiched with Nafion/conducting nanoparticulate electrospun webs were used as polymer electrolytes of IPMC. Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) and silver were the conducting nanoparticulates and the nanoparticles dispersed in a Nafion solution were electrospun. IPMCs with the Nafion/conducting nanoparticulate electrospun webs displayed improved displacements, response rates, and blocking forces. MWNT was superior to silver in terms of displacement and blocking force, and the webs without the conducting fillers also caused enhanced performances compared with the conventional IPMCs. These improvements were attributed to an elevated electrolyte flux through highly porous interlayers and capacitance induced by well dispersed conducting fillers, and low interfacial resistance between electrolyte and electrodes.

  • The formation mechanism and photocatalytic properties of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/$TiO_2$-based nanotube (TNTs) composite are investigated. The CNT/TNT composite is synthesized via a solution chemical route. It is confirmed that this 1-D nanotube composite has a core-shell nanotubular structure, where the TNT surrounds the CNT core. The photocatalytic activity investigated based on the methylene blue degradation test is superior to that of with pure TNT. The CNTs play two important roles in enhancing the photocatalytic activity. One is to act as a template to form the core-shell structure while titanate nanosheets are converted into nanotubes. The other is to act as an electron reservoir that facilitates charge separation and electron transfer from the TNT, thus decreasing the electron-hole recombination efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the actuating voltage of the nanotweezer made by manual assembly using carbon nanotube. The nanotweezer is composed of two CNT arms that are made by the multiwalled carbon nanotube and tungsten tip. Since the each CNT arm has the macro actuator, the nanotweezer can manipulate a large particle and it is possible to close and open the CNT arm repeatedly. The closing voltage, i.e., actuating voltage is calculated using the capacitance between the carbon nanotubes in CNT arm. We demonstrate the actuation of the nanotweezer using the voltage calculated with the electrostatic force.

  • The mechanical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)-reinforced epoxy matrix composites with different weight percentages of MWNTs have been investigated. Also, the morphologies and failure behaviors of the composites after mechanical tests are studied by SEM and TEM analyses. As a result, the addition of MWNTs into the epoxy matrix has a remarkable effect on the mechanical properties. And the fracture surfaces of MWNTs/epoxy composites after flexural strength tests show different failure mechanisms for the composites under different nanotube contents. Also, a chemical functionalization of MWNTs can be a useful tool to improve the dispersion of the nanotubes in an epoxy system, resulting in increasing the mechanical properties of the composite materials studied.

  • The coating of metal surface with carbon nanotubes(CNTs) has been studied for the heat transfer enhancement of the boiling and condensation of refrigerant. The multiwalled carbon nanotube/copper oxide(CuO) composite powder, which has been surface modified by dispersant and polyvinyl alcohol solution, was ultrasonically sprayed and sintered on a copper wafer. In this paper, experiments were performed to assess the characterization and comparison of the carbon nanotube before and after sinterning and the morphology changes of the CNT/CuO-coated surface by using different dispersants. The dispersants used are THF (Tetrahydrofuran), SDBS(Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt), SDS(Sodium dodecy sulfate). The samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and Raman spectroscopy.

  • In this work multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/fibrin hybrid structures were synthesized via the transglutaminase- catalyzed polymerization of fibrinogen (FBG). Specifically, FBG was tethered onto oxidized MWCNTs by amide coupling, and the in situ polymerization of FBG to fibrin was performed by plasma transglutaminase (Factor XIIIa) in the presence of thrombin. The attached FBG was found to be biologically active and was polymerized to fibrin by thrombin and Factor XIIIa. MWCNT-FBG and MWCNT-Fibrin structures were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy.
