  • With the recent trend of Web 2.0, experts argue that the UCC age has blossomed where people themselves produce their own content and share it on the Internet. However, more academic studies on video UCC production are needed to understand fully the video UCC phenomenon in Korea. This study was done as an exploratory study to investigate the motivations for video UCC production and its effects. Results reveal that the important motivations for participating in video UCC creation are fun, sharing, and self-expression. For the rewards for video UCC creation participation, feedback, sharing and self-satisfaction are considered valuable psychological rewards by the video UCC creators. • The motivation behind consumers' voluntary participation plays a key role in determining the successful out-come of co-creation activities. This study, in the context of online-community-based co-creation, investigates the effect of consumers' motivation on continuance participation and advocacy intention by mediating perceived empowerment. We focused on analyzing the co-creation process of new product developments for beauty-related firms and platforms. A web survey was conducted on active users of the online beauty community who have participated in co-creation projects. A total of 226 responses were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 22.0 statistical programs. The findings illustrate that all motivations for participation (intrinsic, social, and financial) influenced perceived empowerment. This increased empowerment also positively affected continuance participation and advocacy intention for future co-creation projects. Furthermore, we explored the moderating role of the engagement period in the community regarding the relationship between participation motivation and empowerment. The results show, consumers with high intrinsic motivation greatly perceive empowerment when they have short-term engagement in the community; those with high social motivation strongly recognize empowerment when they have long-term engagement in the community. We provide valuable recommendations regarding how to make innovative co-creation experiences between beauty firms and consumers via an online-based community.

  • This study examines mobile news engagement-conceptualized as news exposure and participation-in the context of South Asia which has experienced tremendous growth in mobile-Internet users without receiving much attention from communication scholars. Along with demographic characteristics, this research incorporates motivational factors (grounded on uses and gratifications-U&G-approach) and news type preferences to explore their roles in mobile news engagement among urban citizens in Bangladesh. Results of a self-administered survey (N = 504) revealed that participants' mobile news engagement partially varied depending on their demographic differences, particularly gender, age, and education. Our study also unveiled that individuals' motivation for sharing information seemed to be a strong predictor of mobile news exposure and participation. In addition, Bangladeshi respondents were more likely to be interested in the hard news in terms of expressing views on news comments and sharing news via mobile platform. Conversely, preference for soft type news had a significant influence on news exposure through mobile browsing. This study provides insights into the understanding of global phenomena of mobile news engagement by unpacking the case of Bangladesh where mobile news usage seems to be an evolving state.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine major motivations for using SNSs and the effect of them on SNS participation. In order to address the research questions, 253 undergraduate and graduate students participated. Results of the study were summarized as follows. First, Cyworld was mainly used followed by Facebook and Twitter. Most of the respondents had access to SNSs via smart devices. The average frequency of SNS use was 1-3 times a day and they used them less than 30 minutes a time. The reasons why they started to use SNSs were mainly to follow current trends, maintain friendship, and accept acquaintances recommendations. Second, the result of component analysis derived four primarily underlying dimensions related to SNS use; self-satisfaction, social interaction, recreation, and information seeking. Third, both self-satisfaction and social interaction motivation had significant correlation with SNS participation. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that self motivation was more influential on active participation than social interaction and information seeking motivation.

The Effect of SNS Users' Use Motivations on Using SNS and Recognizing Characteristics of SNS Messages: Focused on the Comparison among 'Facebook', 'Twitter', 'Cyworld', and 'Me2day' (소셜네트워크서비스의 이용동기가 실제 이용과 메시지 특성 인식에 미치는 영향: '페이스북', '트위터', '싸이월드', '미투데이'의 비교를 중심으로)

  • According to the result of the online survey of SNS users, SNS users' use motivations consist of 'information', 'participation', and 'interaction'. SNS use motivations explain characteristics of an individual SNS very well. SNS users that aim to collect information use much more the SNS for communication like 'Twitter' and 'Me2day' than other SNS. SNS users that aim to participate in communication through SNS use much more 'Cyworld' that is joined by the most subscriber. And SNS users that aim to interact with other users use much more the SNS for network like 'Facebook' and 'Cyworld'. This tendency can also be seen in the use hours and access times of SNS by SNS use motivations. Meanwhile, the SNS Users that aim to collect information and interact with other users positively rate SNS messages. On the other hand, the SNS Users that aim to participate in communication through SNS negatively rate those. This confirms that SNS use motivations affect SNS users' recognition of SNS messages.

  • Crowd-funding platforms, which enable to collect funds from individuals, have recently gained growing interests around the world. This study intends to provide future research directions for the crowd-funding by reviewing past research works. For this purpose, two research themes are selected - (1) motivations to participate in crowd-funding and (2) critical success factors for the project funding. The motivations are analyzed from both perspectives of fund demanders and suppliers. The critical success factors are investigated by using four dimensions: fund demanders, fund suppliers, relationships between demanders and suppliers, and project characteristics. Using the implications found from the past research, this paper offers future research issues necessary for the growth of crowd-funding platforms.
