  • This study investigated the relationship between types of attachment and social adaptation of kindergarten children. Subjects were 108 3-year-old children, their mothers, and their teachers. Results showed that children securely attached to both mother and teacher adapted better than children who were insecurely attached to both mother and teacher. Children who were securely attached to mother but insecurely attached to teacher, and children who were insecurely attached to mother but securely attached to teacher adapted better than children who were insecurely attached to both mother and teacher. This study suggests that the quality of child-mother or child-teacher attachment affects children's social adaptation with the passage of time in kindergarten.

  • This study was conducted to identify parenting factors relating to attachment style. Subjects were 418 college students. Participants completed 1) a brief demographic data questionnaires, 2) Parenting Behavior Inventory and 3) Relationship Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using discriminant analysis for the total sample and by gender. For men, affection, neglect, monitoring, intrusiveness, reasoning, inconsistency and physical abuse of both father and mother are important parenting behaviors that contribute to discriminating secure attachment style from insecure attachment style. For women, neglect, affection, reasoning, inconsistency, monitoring and physical abuse of father and affection, reasoning, neglect, inconsistency and monitoring of mother are important parenting behaviors that contribute to discriminating secure attachment style from insecure attachment style. The implications of this study for theory and practice were discussed and recommendations for future research were made.

  • This study examined the relationships among children's attachment to the mother, trait anger, anger expression style, and emotional-behavioral problems in children. The subjects were 384 5th and 6th graders at elementary schools in J and G cities of Jeonbuk-Do. The instruments were Revised Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA-R), Stat-Trait Anger Expression Inventory - Korean version (STAXI-K), and Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ). The major results are as follows; The level of children's attachment to the mother was negatively related to anger and emotional-behavioral problems, and the level of trait anger was positively related to emotional-behavioral problems. Children who have high anger expression and anger suppression tended to show more externalized behavior problems. Finally, the regression analysis showed that children's attachment to the mother and anger are revealed as significant factors in emotional-behavioral problems.

  • This research addressed the issue of how mothers' representations of attachment are transmitted to children, focusing on post-infancy attachment and on maternal stress as a mediator between mother's attachment style and child attachment security. Fifty-three mother-child dyads participated in a lab visit when the children were 30 months (T1) and 49 months (T2) of age. The Attachment Style Questionnaire and the Parental Stress Inventory were used to measure mothers' characteristics; the Separation-Reunion procedure and classification at T1 and the Attachment Q-set at T2 were used to measure children's attachment security. The models were analyzed by Analysis of Moment Structure Equation. Results confirmed evidence that no direct pathway exists between maternal attachment style and child attachment security : at T1 child attachment security formation was related to maternal stress, but there was no such relationship at T2.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mother's warmth, control and toddler's attachment security. Subjects were 83 three-year old children and their mothers in Jeonju city. The intruments of this study were the Parenting Style Scale(Cho et at.,1999) and Attachment Q-set(AQS; Waters,1987). Mothers rated the questionnaire and observed a child through AQS at home. The results showed that the mean of the child attachment security was .39 and the range of attachment score was from -0.07 to 0.79. The scores of mothers' warmth and control were above the mean. The child's attachment security was predicted by mother's warmth. Mother's warmth appeared to be meaningful for child to develop the secure attachment. The result of this study suggested that authoritative parenting characterized with warmth and control was significantly associated with the child's attachment security.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate how childhood attachment and autonomy explain the gender differences in adulthood heterosexual love styles. The study examines (1) the gender differences in childhood attachment and autonomy and adulthood heterosexual love relationships, (2) the relationship between childhood attachment and autonomy in relation to mother, and love styles in adulthood among men and women. 405 married or unmarried men and women participated in a questionnaire study. Such statistic analyses are engaged for this study as cross-tabulation analysis, and one-way ANOVA. The key findings of the study are that the relationships of childhood developmental pattern of attachment and autonomy to adulthood heterosexual love styles differ between men and women. That is, developmental patterns of childhood attachment and autonomy to mother operate as a vulnerability factor in establishing adulthood love relationship, whereas childhood experiences do not explain adulthood love among women. These gender differences are discussed in theoretical contexts which explain gender-differentiated process of separation from mother during childhood.

Methods :The subjects of this study were 15 mothers with selective mutism children who were diagnosed by DSM-IV criteria at psychiatry outpatient department of Kyungpook National University Hospital from March 1998 to February 2005. The controls of this study were 30 mothers with normal children who are in the second grade of elementary school in Daegu. We assessed the adult attachment style characteristics of these mothers by Revised Adult Attachment Scale, and Reciprocal Attachment Questionnaire-Korean version, self-report attachment style questionnaire. Results : 1) On the self-report attachment style questionnaire, it revealed that mothers with selective mutism children had both of the secure and the dismissing-avoidant types predominantly and the tendency that mothers with selective mutism children more commonly had dismissing-avoidant type than controls did. 2) On the comparison of attachment quality of mothers, although only the anxiety subscale difference was significant, it revealed that mothers with selective mutism children had generally lower score pattern in all of closeness, dependence and anxiety subscale than controls did. It was consistent with the consequence of self-report attachment style questionnaire in this study. Conclusion : This study showed that the distribution of adult attachment style of mothers with selective mutism children was different from those of controls. The dismissing-avoidant attachment style was predominant in mothers with selective mutism children. we suppose the possibility that the dismissing-avoidant attachment style of mothers with selective mutism children has relation with selective mutism.

  • Subjects were 2192 middle and high school students of Seoul and Kyonggi Province. Data, consisting of a self-report questionnaire, were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, univariate F-test and stepwise multiple regression. Findings were that boys showed more avoidance/distraction and active problem solving styles but less support seeking than girls. Older adolescents reported less parent attachment than younger adolescents; girls reported more mother attachment than boys. Older adolescents reported more life satisfaction than younger adolescents; girls reported more life satisfaction than boys. A higher degree of life satisfaction was reported by subjects with more parent attachment, more active problem solving and less avoidance/distraction styles, by younger adolescents, and by girls. • This study examined how the attachment styles of married mothers influence their marital conflicts and caring behavior and the behavior problems of their children. Subjects were 60 mothers and their 60 elementary school children. Data were analyzed with correlation, multiple analysis of variance and path analysis. Mothers with unstable attachment styles had more children with behavior problems and they had more serious marital conflicts. Mother's with preoccupied attachment styles experienced more marital conflict than all other styles. Seriousness of marital conflict was related to negative caring behavior and negative caring behavior was related to behavior problems in children. There were direct paths between the attachment style of mothers and both externalized and internalized behavior problems of children in the clinical group.
