  • Mother-Child Interactions during Problem Solving were analyzed in relation to the child's attachment security and temperament. Subjects were fifty-three 44-to 57-month-old children and their mothers. Attachment security was assessed by Attachment Q set (Waters, 1987); mother-child interactions were observed at home, and maternal ratings of child temperament were collected by questionnaire (Chun 1993). Attachment security scores were positively related to mother's cognitive assistance and positively interactions with the child and to the child's positive affect toward mother. The child's activity perceived by mother was negatively related to mother's efficient interactions and positively to the child's "reliance on mother." The child's behavior toward the mother in the task session and the child's temperament added variance above attachment in accounting for the mother's behavior.

The respondents in this study were 697 school aged children attending elementary schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province. Questionnaires, which required self-reporting by children, were used to investigate mother attachment, peer attachment and depression. The collected data were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) and Sobel test using AMOS 8.0, and SPSS 15.0. The results of the study were as follows. Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) revealed that peer attachment partially mediated the relationship between mother attachment and depression. First, mother attachment had a direct effect on peer attachment. Second, peer attachment had a direct effect on depression. • The purpose of this study is to examine the intergenerational transmission of mother-daughter attachment across three generations, and to determine whether the mother-daughter attachment of three generations influences the adult daughter's ego-resilience. The subjects of this study were 310 unmarried adult women aged 20${\sim}$29, residing in the Busan area, and their 310 middle-aged mothers. The mothers responded to two sets of questionnaire investigating their attachment to their mothers (G1-G2) in the past and the present attachment to their adult daughters (G2-G3). Meanwhile, the adult daughters were given questionnaires regarding their attachment to their mothers and their ego-resiliency. The measurements used for this study were the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) and the Ego-Resiliency Scale (ER). Among the distributed questionnaires, 265 sets were collected and 252 sets were actually analyzed using SPSS 12.0 after 13 sets had been excluded due to incomplete data. Basic statistics were used such as frequency analysis, Pearson's correlation and hierarchical regression analysis. The study results were as follows. First, the adult daughter-mother (G2-G3) attachment was explained mostly by mother-grandmother (G1-G2) attachment, daughter's age, and economic status of the family. The strongest factor was the mother-grandmother attachment which implies the transmission of attachment through generations. Second, among the factors that influenced the ego-resilience of an unmarried adult daughter, attachment to one's mother perceived by the daughter turned out to be the most significant. Especially, the more positive the adult daughter's emotion toward her mother and the higher the daughter's education, the stronger the ego-resilience of the adult single daughter was. It was concluded that the mother-daughter attachment remained consistent throughout three generations, which influenced the social-psychological adjustment of the adult unmarried daughter.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons of Object Attachment Occurrence in infant and the meanings of it in his early development. For this purpose, the following hypotheses were supposed. 1. Infant's object Attachment will be a substitutional for mother attachment when he has opportunities to his mother during his first years. 2. Infant's Object Attachment will not impede the infant's normal development. In order to test this hypotheses 28 mothers whose infants show or have shown this phenomenon and 28 mothers whose infants show or have shown this phenomenon and 28 mothers whose infants do not show this one were interviewed about their child rearing practice and attitude. They were selected by the random sampling method from 310 household wives living at a delux Apt. in Seoul. The results obtained in this study are as follow ; 1. The less opportunities infant has for 1) his mother's breast feeding 2) having physical contact with his mother 3) spending time with his mother 4) receiving prompt response from his mother to his crying, the more he is apt to show this phenomenon. And infant whose first main attachment figure is not his mother also shows the same apt. 2. There was no difference between two groups in intelligence and personality. So it can be concluded that infant's Object Attachment is a substitutional phenomenon for mother attachment in the mother during his first years, and it does not impede infant's normal development.

  • The attachment representation of 40 36- to 52-month-old upper-middle class children was analyzed in relation to their attachment security and mother-child interaction behaviors. Instruments were the Attachment Story Completion Task(Bretherton, Ridgeway, & Cassidy, 1990), the Attachment Q-set, and the Vocabulary test of the K-WIPPSI. Mother-child interaction behaviors were observed at home during semi-structured problem-solving situations. The Attachment Story Completion Task classified Korean preshoolers from these upper-middle class families as securely attached to their mothers. Girls' representation of their attachment relationship was more secure than boys. Preschoolers' attachment representation was significantly related to vocabulary ability. Attachment security correlated positively with preschool children's attachment representation. Mother-child interaction behaviors related significantly to preschool children's attachment representation.
