  • The influences of scatterer and absorber in turbid material by light scattering were interpreted for the scattered intensity and wavelength. The molecular properties have been studied by Monte Carlo simulation in resin of New Austria Tunnel Method. It has been found that the effects of optical properties in scattering media could be investigated by the optical parameters(${\mu}_s$, ${\mu}_a$, ${\mu}_t$). Monte Carlo Simulation method for modelling of light transport in the civil engineering and construction field was applied. The results using a phantom were discussed that the distance from source to detector is closer, and scattering intensity is stronger with those obtained through Monte Carlo Simulation. It may also aid in designing the best model for coatings and corrosion for the durability of metal constructions.

  • This paper proposes a method of moments(MoM)/Monte-Carlo simulation and Physical Optics(PO) model to determine Bistatic Coherent Reflectivity of sea surfaces at various wind speeds. For the MoM simulation, a Gaussian random rough sea surface was generated based on the data of Tae-An ocean at various wind speeds and sea surface heights. The numerical results of the MoM/Monte Carlo simulations were used to verify the validity region of the PO model. It was found that the numerical result for a flat surface agrees quite well with the Fresnel reflection coefficient. The validity of the PO model on the rough sea surface is shown by using ray tracing method.

  • A deterministic stress-based methodology has traditionally been applied in pipeline design. Meanwhile, reliability based design and assessment (RBDA) methodology has been extensively applied in offshore or nuclear structures. Lately, the release of ISO standard on reliability based limit state methods for pipelines ISO16708 indicates that the RBDA methodology is one of the newest directions of natural gas pipeline design method. This paper presents a case study of the RBDA procedure for predicting the time-dependent failure probability of pipelines with corrosion defects, where separable Monte Carlo (SMC) method is applied in the reliability estimation for corroded pipeline instead of traditional, crude Monte Carlo(CMC) Method. The result shows the SMC method take advantage of improving accuracy in reliability calculation.

  • A methodology for the probabilistic determination of active storage capacity of an impounding reservoir is proposed with due considerations to the durations and return periods of the low flow series at the reservoir site. For more reliable probabilistic analysis the best-fit stochastic generation model of Monte Carlo type was first selected for the generation of monthly flow series, the models tested being the Month Carlo Model based on the month-by-month flow series (Monte Carlo-A Type), Monte Carlo Model based on the standardized sequential monthly flow series (Monte Carlo-B Type), and the Thomas-Fiering Model. Monte Carlo-B Model was final1y selected and synthetic monthly flows of 200 years at Hong Cheon dam site were generated. With so generated 200 years' monthly flows partial duration series of low flows were developed for various durations. Each low flow series was further processed by a nonsequential mass analysis for specified draft rates. This mass analysis furnished the storage-draft-recurrence interval relationship which gives the reservoir storage requirement for a specified water demand from the reservoir during a drought of given return period. Illustrations are given on the application of these results in analyzing the water supply capacity of a particlar reservoir, existing or proposed.

  • As the correct measuring of the light dosimetry in biological tissues give the important affection to the effect of PDT treatment we used Monte Carlo simulation to measure the light dosimetry on this study. The parameters using in experiments are the optical properties of the real biological tissue, and we used Henyey-Greenstein phase function among the phase functions. As we results, we displayed the result the change of Fluence rate and the difference against the previous theory was at least 0.35%. Biological tissues using in experiment were Human tissue, pig tissue, rat liver tissue and rabbit muscle tissue. The most of biological tissue have big scattering coefficient in visible wavelength which influences penetration depth. The penetration depth of human tissue in visible region is 1.5~2cm. We showed that it is possible to measure fluence rate and penetration depth within the biological tissues by Monte Carlo simulation very well.

  • Various kinds of rock mass properties, which can be obtained from laboratory tests as well as field tests, can be reasonably applied to the design of earth structures. An extrapolation technique can be used for this application and it generally guarantee its quality from a sufficient amount of test results because it is based on the RMR value in most cases. When the confident RMR can not be obtained because of the insufficient testing results, the Monte Carlo Simulation technique can be introduced fer deducing the proper RMR and this assessed RMR can be reused fur the major input parameters. Authors' proposed method can be verified from the comparison between the results of numerical analysis and the evidences of field site.

  • From a social network of n nodes connected by l lines, one may produce centrality measures such as closeness, betweenness and so on. In the past, the magnitude of n was around 1,000 or 10,000 at most. Nowadays, some networks have 10,000, 100,000 or even more than that. Thus, the scalability issue needs the attention of researchers. In this short paper, we explore random networks of the size around n = 100,000 by Monte-Carlo method and propose Monte-Carlo algorithms of computing closeness and betweenness centrality measures to study the small world properties of social networks.

  • Monte Carlo method is one of the powerful engineering tools especially to solve the complex non-linear problems. The Monte Carlo method gives approximate solution to a variety of mathematical problems by performing statistical sampling experiments on a computer. One of the methods to predict the time dependent failure probability of one of the bridge components or the bridge system is a lifetime function. In this paper, FORTRAN program is developed to predict the failure probability of bridge components or bridge system by using both system reliability and lifetime function. Monte Carlo method is used to generate the parameters of the lifetime function. As a case study, the program is applied to the concrete-steel bridge to predict the failure probability.
