  • One-step seeded polymerization was used to prepare $7{\sim}10{\mu}m$ of crosslinked monodisperse spheres with four crosslinking agents using $4.68{\mu}m$ poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) seed particles in aqueous-alcoholic media in the absence of the swelling process. The crosslinking agents used were ethylene glycol dimethacrylate(EGDMA), allyl methacrylate(AMA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate(TMPTMA). The effects of the type and concentration of the crosslinking agents on the swelling, pore size, thermal property of the networks and morphology of the particles were studied. The chemical structures and concentrations of the crosslinking agents affected both the swelling ratio and the porosity of the networks. In addition, the chemistry of the reactive vinyl group and chain length of the crosslinking agents affected the stability of the monodisperse particles of the ultimate morphology.

  • Monodisperse PMMA micro spheres are prepared by means of a simple soap-free emulsion polymerization in methanol-enriched aqueous medium in a single step process. The size and uniformity of the microspheres are dependent on the polymerization temperature. In a stable system, the uniformity is improved with the polymerization time. The most uniform and stable micro spheres are obtained under mild agitation speed of 100 rpm at 70$^{\circ}C$. The monodisperse PMMA microspheres in the size range of 1.4-2.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ having less than 5% size variation are successfully achieved with varying concentrations of monomer and initiator. As the monomer and initiator concentrations increase, the larger micro spheres with enhanced uniformity are obtained. However, the decreased amount of water induces the polydisperse PMMA particles due to the generation of secondary particles.

  • In preparing micron-sized monodisperse polystyrene beads by dispersion polymerization, the conversion, and the particle size and its distribution were affected by the reaction temperature, concentration of the monomer, solvent and initiator, molecular weight and concentration of the steric stabilizer, amount of oxygen existing in the reactor, and an appropriate combination of these starting materials. Ethanol as a dispersing agent, styrene as a monomer, PVP as a steric stabilizer, AIBN as an initiator, DVB as a cross-linking agent and toluene as a co-solvent were the basic materials for the synthesis. The reaction rate and the conversion were increased with the reaction temperature and the amount of DVB from 1 to 4%, and the conversion was saturated after 10 hours of the reaction time. The optimum reaction recipe for the preparation of the monodisperse PS beads was 25% styrene monomer, 0.5% DVB, 25% toluene, 10-15% PVP, and 2 and 4% AIBN, thereby, 3.9~4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3.4~9.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of polystyrene beads, respectively, were successfully synthesized.

  • Colored, electrophoretic polymer nanoparticles of poly (styrene-co-divinylbenzene-co-vinyl acetate)[poly(St-co-DVB-co-VAc)] were prepared by emulsifier-free emulsion co-polymerization and reactive dyeing. The emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of styrene, divinyl benzene and vinyl acetate was carried out at $70^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs to obtain monodisperse polymer nanoparticles of poly(St-co-DVB-co-VAc) with an average diameter of 180~200 nm. These nanoparticles were transformed into poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene-co-vinyl alcohol) [poly(St-co-DVB-co-VA)] nanoparticles through the saponification reaction. The poly(St-co-DVB-co-VA) nanoparticles were treated with reactive dyes to obtain the colored, monodisperse electrophoretic nanoparticles, and their morphology and surface charge were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, UV/Vis absorbance and zeta-potentiometry.

  • Polymer core and metal shell composite particles have been prepared by the electroless nickel plating on the surface of monodisperse polystyrene microspheres. Various sizes of polystyrene particles with highly monodisperse state could be synthesized by controlling the dispersion medium in dispersion polymerization. Electroless nickel plating was performed on the polystyrene particle with diameter of $3.4\;{\mu}m$. The morphology of polystyrene/nickel composite particles was investigated to see the effect of the plating conditions, such as the $PdCl_2$ and glycine concentrations and the dropping rate of nickel plating solution, on nickel deposition. With $PdCl_2$ and glycine concentrations at more than 0.4 g/L and 1 M, respectively, more uniform nickel layer and less precipitated nickel aggregates were formed. At the given plating time of 2 h, the same amount of plating solution was introduced by varying the dropping rate. Though the effect of dropping rate on particle morphology was not noticeable, the dropping rate of 0.15 mL/min for 60 min showed rather uniform plating.

  • Polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared via latex technology and the effect of nanotube length on rheological properties were investigated. Monodisperse PS particle was synthesized by the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization and two types of MWCNTs were used after surface modification to improve dispersion state and to remove impurities. Final nanocomposites were prepared by the freeze-drying process after dispersing the PS particles and the surface-modified MWCNTs in a ultrasonic bath. The effects of MWCNT content and nanotube length on rheological properties were evaluated by imposing the small-amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The PS/MWCNT nanocomposites showed that rheological properties were enhanced as the amount and length of MWCNT increased. It is speculated that the rheological characteristics of nanocomposites change from liquid-like to solid-like as the MWCNT amount increases, and the critical concentration to achieve network structure decreases as the nanotube length increases.

  • A new kind of SBM co-polymer binder as styrene, n-butyl acrylate, and methacrylic acid (SBM) monodisperse co-polymer binder materials basted on $TiO_2$ pastes was synthesized and this $TiO_2$ pastes were applied of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The SBM co-polymer binder was prepared by soap-free emulsion copolymerization using a PEG-EEM macromonomer. The photoanodes were characterized by morphology investigated from field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The photoelectrochemical properties of the thin films and the performance of DSSCs were measured by photovoltaic-current density. DSSC based on the emulsion co-polymer binder was obtained conversion efficiency of 7.1% under irradiation of AM 1.5($100mWcm^{-2}$).

  • Solution polymerization was conducted with water-soluble methacrylic acid (MAA) as a monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator at a selected temperature between $70^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}C$. When the ratio between MAA and water was reduced or initiator concentration increased, molecular weights decreased. Molecular weights of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) showed nearly no dependence on reaction temperature. The Weissenberg effect was observed in most polymerization reactions, while its effect weakened at $90^{\circ}C$. The polydispersity index was less than 1.5 in most of the reactions. An increase in the stirring speed produced PMAAs with increasing molecular weights. When the stirring speed reached 800 rpm, we retrieved a monodisperse PMAA with both the number and weight average molecular weights of 791,000 g/mol. The glass transition temperature was found to be $162^{\circ}C$.

  • We have successfully synthesized relatively monodisperse and cross-linked melamine-formaldehyde (M-F) microspheres by dispersed polycondensation and subsequent pH adjustment with serum replacement cleaning. The average particle sizes (equation omitted): weight-average and (equation omitted) : number-average), the polydispersity index (equation omitted), the number of particles N$\_$p/ and the gel content of the M-F microspheres were observed by varying the pH, the surfactant concentration, and the polymerization temperature. We observed that both the pH and the polymerization temperature were predominant factors in determining (equation omitted) and N$\_$p/, but the effect that the temperature and pH had on the gel content ( > 94% for all samples) was negligible. The exponents of the slopes of plots of N$\_$p/ versus pH and surfactant concentration were -10 and 0.6, respectively. Particle nucleation and growth were achieved within short periods; the incessant coagulation occurred even in the presence of surfactants.
