Lessons Learned during the Early Phases of a Modular Project: A Case Study of UNLV's Solar Decathlon 2020 Project

  • The U.S. Department of Energy conducts the Solar Decathlon competition as a student-based achievement that encourages sustainable design with energy efficiency and solar energy technologies. In the 2020 competition, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) team designed, fabricated, and constructed a net-zero modular house that applies innovative and highly efficient building technologies. This paper focused on the lessons learned during the early phases of this ongoing modular project. The research methodology included obtaining feedback from key project participants using a well-structured questionnaire. The results showed that the major items/challenges in the project's planning phase included selecting the modular size, planning the construction system, planning the materials and procurement, estimating costs and duration, selecting a fabricator, collaboration and communication, safety, and planning module transportation. These findings will help modular practitioners and future Solar Decathlon competition participants better understand how and what factors they should consider most during the early phases through the lessons learned.

  • 최근 모듈러 공법을 활용한 중 고층 건축 기술이 개발되면서 현장 시공 오차 관리의 중요성이 부각되었다. 모듈러 공법은 공장 생산 특성 때문에 현장에서 시공 오차를 조정하는 것이 매우 제한적이다. 따라서 시공 오차를 사전에 예방하기 위해서는 모듈러 공법 특성을 반영한 관리 방안이 필요하며 각 단계별 공사 참여자의 의사 결정이 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 모듈러 공사 시공 오차 요인을 분석하고, 시공 프로세스 기반의 시공 오차 관리 방안 의사 결정 지원 모델을 제안하였다. 본 연구의 결과물은 모듈러 공사 참여자가 시공 오차 관리 방안을 도출하는데 가이드라인 역할을 할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

유닛모듈러 기반 도시형 생활주택의 BIM 모델링 프로세스 개발 연구 (The Study on the Developing Process of BIM Modeling for Urban-life-housing Based on Unit Modular)

  • The current architectural design of unit modular has been based on 2D of CAD program, so unit modular character which needs unit information management, as a dried-member system, has no effect on design process. The purpose of this study is We have developed a suitable BIM design process, according to various works of construction, then tried to contribute to supply and activation of the urban-life-housing based on unit modular. The BIM modeling process based on unit modular has been in order of unit combination with preparing manual classification, and, it has been constructed, at construction site, from housing foundation to roof finish by Bottom-up method. At a manufacturing factory, it has been produced in order of 1) grouping materials and parts, 2) fabricating unit boxes, and 3) interference examination of unit boxes, and each order has been classified as housing structure, architecture, plumbing process separately. At a construction site, the fabrication has been done in order of, like as a real housing construction scenario, 1) RC foundation work 2) unit module job-site-fabrication work, 3) roof truss work, 4) plumbing and HVAC work, and 5) housing interior finish work. After modeling process, the interference examination on each work of construction has finally completed modeling. The Unit modular utilizing BIM modeling can make easy housing maintenance through systematic control with preparing manual of unit module information, and securing accurate and speedy construction information. And it will promote design credibility and create maximum effect of unit modular construction method, such as construction period reduction and upgrade of construction quality, etc., through the computer simulation as real as construction environment in cyber space, and with the interfering examination.

RSA 공개키 암호화시스템의 효율적인 Radix-4 시스톨릭 VLSI 구조 (Efficient Radix-4 Systolic VLSI Architecture for RSA Public-key Cryptosystem)

  • 본 논문에서는 RSA 공개키 암호화 알고리즘을 위한 효율적인 Radix-4 시스톨릭 VLSI 아키텍쳐를 제안하였다. 모듈러 곱셈 알고리즘의 이터레이션 단순화와 효율적인 시스톨릭 매핑으로 제안된 구조는 n-비트 모듈러 멱승 연산을 n$^{2}$ 클럭 싸이클에 수행한다. 각 지수 처리 단계에서 두 개의 모듈러 곱셈, M$_{i}$와 P$_{i}$는 중첩되어 연산되며 따라서 제안된 하드웨어의 이용도(hardware utilization)는 100%이다. 또한 RSA 암호화를 위한 총 모듈러 곱셈의 횟수를 줄이기 위하여 지수를 Radix-4 SD(Signed Digit) 수체계를 이용하여 인코딩하였다. 이로 인하여 지수의 NZ(non-zero) 디지트가 약 20% 감소되어 성능이 향상되었다. 기존의 방법들과 비교하였을 때, 제안된 구조는 비교적 적은 하드웨어를 사용하여 우수한 성능을 보였으며 개선된 Montgomery 알고리즘을 바탕으로 한 제안된 구조는 지역성, 규칙성, 확장성 등으로 VLSI 구현에 적합하다.

주거시설로서 모듈러건축 활용화 방안 (The Practical Application of Modular Construction for Residential Facilities)

  • The purpose of this research is to provide basic data for the promotion strategy to activate modular construction system as residential facilities, through a study on the architectural planning, institutions and policies and research on connection details, for the use as residential facilities of the modular construction that is not actively supplied for the general residential facilities. As a result, I suggest sample model plan of domestic and foreign case analysis and characteristic of modular construction and practical application of modular construction for Residential Facilities. Owing to many advantages including short construction period structural stability and economic benefits, modular construction is expected to play a role as residential alternative of socially controversial affordable housing and weekend homes, and potential housing shortage after reunification; and to contribute to the development of design automation and industrialized constructions. Though Korea is still lacking development of the system that meets the domestic context, if supported by ongoing researches on the development of construction methods, materials and details, the settlement of appropriate modular residential facilities to suit the national situation will serve a possible alternative solution for many housing and environmental problems.

  • The modular building system is a type of prefabricated construction method, and is an industrialized building system that transports, assembles, and completes a three-dimensional module manufactured in a factory to the site. The economics of a modular building system where 50 to 80% of the entire process takes place in a modular factory is dominated by productivity of the factory manufacturing process. Since the building of the module is finished by the combination of unit parts produced by each material, it is necessary to manage the process in each module unit. However, currently marketed process control programs do not reflect the features of these modular methods. In this paper, we introduce Modular Factory Design software(MFD 2019) that can make modular unit production plan which reflects production base(modular factory) and production target(application and number of modular units). In order to verify software compatibility and reliability, two production plans with different production methods were formulated and simulated.

  • This paper presents some ideas about an open architectural controller platform for semiconductor manufacturing equipment First, we proposed modular-typed software architecture. Each module is composed of commands and status sets. Second, common bus protocol is suggested in order to communicate with other modules. It is designed with visual c++ programming. Finally, job program is consisted of simple commands and status. Consequently, Controllers are easily developed with some required modular assembling.

  • The purpose of the study of multi-robot system is to realize multi-robot system easy for the control of robot system in case robot is adapted in the complicated environment of task structure. To make real time control possible by making effective use of recognized information in this dynamic environment, suitable distribution of tasks should be made in consideration of function and role of each performing robots. In this paper, IHMA (Intelligent Hybrid Modular Architecture) of Intelligent combined control architecture which utilizes the merits of deliberative and reactive controllers will be suggested and its efficiency will be evaluated through the adaptation of control architecture to representative multi-robot system.

확장 가능형 몽고메리 모듈러 곱셈기 (A Scalable Montgomery Modular Multiplier)

  • 몽고메리 모듈러 곱셈의 유연한 하드웨어 구현을 위한 확장 가능형 아키텍처를 기술한다. 처리요소 (processing element; PE)의 1차원 배열을 기반으로 하는 확장 가능형 모듈러 곱셈기 구조는 워드 병렬 연산을 수행하며, 사용되는 PE 개수 NPE에 따라 연산 성능과 하드웨어 복잡도를 조정하여 구현할 수 있다. 제안된 아키텍처를 기반으로 SEC2에 정의된 8가지 필드 크기를 지원하는 확장 가능형 몽고메리 모듈러 곱셈기(scalable Montgomery modular multiplier; sMM) 코어를 설계했다. 180-nm CMOS 셀 라이브러리로 합성한 결과, sMM 코어는 NPE=1 및 NPE=8인 경우에 각각 38,317 등가게이트 (GEs) 및 139,390 GEs로 구현되었으며, 100 MHz 클록으로 동작할 때, NPE=1인 경우에 57만회/초 및 NPE=8인 경우에 350만회/초의 256-비트 모듈러 곱셈을 연산할 수 있는 것으로 평가되었다. sMM 코어는 응용분야에서 요구되는 연산성능과 하드웨어 리소스를 고려하여 사용할 PE 수를 결정함으로써 최적화된 구현이 가능하다는 장점을 가지며, ECC의 확장 가능한 하드웨어 설계에 IP (intellectual property)로 사용될 수 있다.
