  • In this study a three-axes mobile robot which has two independently controlled driving wheels and a function of simultaneously steering the driving wheels has been developed. Two-motion modes of the mobile robot, the first is a differential velocity motion of two driving wheels and the second is a equal driving and steering motion, have been analyzed and the kinematic and dymanic analyses about the each motion mode have been carried out. As a result of dynamic analysis, the torque used on a motor control and acceleration have been derived explicitly. Hence, a computation time is saved effectively and a real time control of the mobile robot considering the dynamics has become possible. Through a simulation the results considering the dynamics have been compared with that no regarding the dynamics and the possibility of real-time control has been proved.

  • In this paper, control of an omni-directional mobile robot is presented. Relying on encoder measurements to define the azimuth angle yields the dead-reckoned situation which the robot fails in localization. The azimuth angle error due to dead-reckoning is compensated and corrected by the magnetic compass sensor. Noise from the magnetic compass sensor has been filtered out. Kinematics and dynamics of the omni-directional mobile robot are derived based on the global coordinates and used for simulation studies. Experimental studies are also conducted to show the correction by the magnetic compass sensor.

  • In this paper, we propose an implementation of a real-time operating system for the two-wheel mobile robot. With this implementation, we have the ability to control the complex embedded systems of the two-wheel mobile robot. The advantage of the real-time operating system is increasing the reliability and stability of the two-wheel mobile robot when they work in critical environments such as military and industrial applications. The real-time operating system which was ported to this implementation is open systems and the corresponding interfaces for automotive electronics (OSEK/VDX). It is known as the set of specifications on automotive operating systems, published by a consortium founded by the automotive industry. The mechanical design and kinematics of the two-wheel mobile robot are described in this paper. The contributions of this paper suggest a method for adapting and porting OSEK/VDX real-time operating system to the two-wheel mobile robot with the differential drive method, and we are also able to apply the real-time operating system to any complex embedded system easily.

  • In this study, a position control algorithm for an omni-directional mobile robot based on Mecanum wheels was introduced and experimentally evaluated. Multiple ultrasonic sensors were installed around the mobile robot to obtain position feedback. Using the distance of the robot from the wall, the position and orientation of the mobile robot were calculated. In accordance with the omni-directional velocity generation mechanism, the velocity kinematics between the Mecanum wheel and the mobile platform were determined. Based on this formulation, a simple and intuitive position control algorithm was suggested. To evaluate the control algorithm, a test bed composed of artificial walls was designed and implemented. While conventional control algorithms based on normal wheels require additional path planning for two-dimensional planar motion, the omni-directional mobile robot using distance sensors was able to directly follow target positions with the simple proposed position feedback algorithm.

  • This paper presents the optimal array of optical mice for the accurate velocity estimation of a mobile robot. It is assumed that there can be some restriction on the installation of two or more optical mice at the bottom of a mobile robot. First, the velocity kinematics of a mobile robot with an array of optical mice is derived, which maps the velocity of a mobile robot to the velocities of optical mice. Second, taking into account the consistency in physical units, the uncertainty ellipsoid is obtained to represent the error characteristics of the mobile robot velocity estimation owing to noisy optical mouse measurements. Third, a simple but effective performance index is defined as the inverse of the volume of the uncertainty ellipsoid, which can be used for the optimization of the optimal optical mouse placement. Fourth, simulation results for the optimal placement of three optical mice within a given elliptical region are given.

  • Most of the previously employed dynamic modeling approaches, including Natural Orthogonal Complement Algorithm, have limitations on their application to the mobile robot, specifically at singular configurations. Also, in their dynamic modeling of mobile robots, wheel dynamics is usually ignored assuming that its dynamic effect is negligibly small. As a remedy for this, a singularity-free operational space dynamic modeling approach based on Lagrange's form of the D' Alembert principle is proposed, and the singularity-free characteristic of the proposed dynamic modeling is discussed in the process of analytical derivation of the proposed dynamic model. Then an accurate dynamic model taking into account the wheel dynamics of the omni-directional mobile robot is derived, and through simulation it is manifested that the effect of the wheel dynamics on the whole dynamic model of the mobile robot may not be negligible, but rather in some cases it is significantly large, possibly affecting the operational performances of dynamic model-based control algorithms. Lastly, the importance of its accurate dynamic model is further illustrated through impulse analysis and its simulation for the mobile robot.

  • A new scheme for a mobile robot to track and capture a moving object using camera images is proposed. The moving object is assumed to be a point-object and is projected onto an image plane to form a geometrical constraint equation that provides the position data of the object based on the kinematics of the active camera. Uncertainties in position estimation caused by the point-object assumption are compensated for using the Kalman filter. To generate the shortest time path to capture the moving object, the linear and angular velocities are estimated and utilized. In this paper, the experimental results of the tracking and capturing of a target object with the mobile robot are presented.

  • Tutorial contents of kinematics and dynamics of a wheeled drive mobile robot are presented. Based on the dynamic model, simulation studies of position tracking of a mobile robot are performed. The control structure of several position control algorithms using visual feedback are proposed and their performances are compared. In order to compensate for uncertainties from unknown dynamics and ignored dynamic effects such as slip conditions, neural network based position control schemes are proposed. Experiments are conducted and the results show the performance of the vision based neural network control scheme fumed out to be the best among several proposed schemes.
