The rubber was compounded with carbon black and silica series-filler to examine the effects of the various rubber fillers on a gasket material's suitability and fuel cell stack conclusion. The evaluation of a long term heat resistance and oil resistance of the mixed rubber material was performed considering at the drive environment of PEMFC. Test results of compression set for the most influencing property of gasket showed that it was about less than 15% at long term of up to 1000 h. In this experiment, FEM analysis is carried out about the rubber material's properties depending on each filler and the stress which is produced when a gasket is contracted by using various filler. Sealing force was expected to maximum 2.5 MPa from minimum 0.2 MPa by using FEM (finite element method) at stacking gasket to gasket.

Creep and shrinkage are the main types of volume change with time in concrete. These changes cause deflection, cracking and stresses that affect durability, serviceability, long-term reliability and structural integrity of civil engineering infrastructure. Although laboratory test may be undertaken to determine the deformation properties of concrete, these are time-consuming, often expensive and generally not a practical option. Therefore, relatively simple empirically design code models are relied to predict the creep strain. This paper reviews the accuracy of creep and shrinkage predictions of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls structures strengthened with carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates, which is characterized by a widthwise varying fibre volume fraction. This review is yielded by three commonly used international "code type" models. The assessed are the: CEB-FIP MC 90 model, ACI 209 model and Bazant & Baweja (B3) model. The time-dependent behavior was investigated to analyze their seismic behavior. In the numerical formulation, the adherents and the adhesives are all modelled as shear wall elements, using the mixed finite element method. Several tests were used to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented to illustrate the significance of the time-dependency of the lateral displacements and eigenfrequencies modes.
Permanent magnetic actuators (P.M.A.s) are widely used to drive medium-voltage-class vacuum circuit breakers (V.C.B.s). In this paper, a method for design optimization of a P.M.A. for V.C.B.s is discussed. An optimal design process employing the response surface method (R.S.M.) is proposed. In order to calculate electromagnetic and mechanical dynamic characteristics, an initial P.M.A. model is subjected to numerical analysis using finite element analysis (F.E.A.), which is validated by comparing the calculated dynamic characteristics of the initial P.M.A. model with no-load test results. Using tables of mixed orthogonal arrays and the R.S.M., the initial P.M.A. model is optimized to minimize the weight of the permanent magnet (P.M.) and to improve the dynamic characteristics. Finally, the dynamic characteristics of the optimally designed P.M.A. are compared to those of the initially designed P.M.A.

In this paper, a hybrid technique is presented. First, the isochromatic fringe data of a given set of points are calculated by the finite element method and are used as input data in complex variable formulations. Then the numerical model of the specimen with a central inclined crack is transformed from the physical plane to the complex plane by conformal mapping. The stress field is analyzed and the mixed-mode stress intensity factors are calculated for this complex plane. The stress intensity factors are calculated by the finite element method as well as by a theoretical method and compared with each other. In order to conveniently compare these values with each other, both actual and regenerated photoelastic fringe patterns are multiplied by a factor of two and sharpened by digital image processing.

Graded layers in which two different constituent particles are mixed are inserted into functionally graded material such that the volume fractions of constituent particles vary continuously and functionally over the entire material domain. The material properties of this dual-phase graded region, which is essential for the numerical analysis of the thermo-mechanical behavior of FGM, have been predicted by traditional homogenization methods. But, these methods are limited to predict the global equivalent material properties of FGMs because the detailed geometry information such as the particel shape and the dispersion structure is not considered. In this context, this study intends to investigate the characteristics of these homogenization methods through the finite element analysis utilizing the discrete micromechanics models of the graded layer, for various volume fractions and external loading conditions.
This paper numerically investigates the effect of changes in the mechanical properties (displacement, strain, and stress) of the ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) without rebar and the reinforced concrete (RC) using steel re-bars. This reinforced concrete is mostly used in the concrete bridge decks. A mixture of sand, gravel, cement, water, steel fiber, superplasticizer, and micro silica was used to fabricate UHPC specimens. The extended finite element method as used in the ABAQUS software is applied for considering the mechanical properties of UHPC, RC, and ordinary concrete specimens. To calibrate the ABAQUS, some experimental tests have been carried out in the laboratory to measure the direct tensile strength of UHPC by the compressive-to-tensile load converting (CTLC) device. This device contains a concrete specimen and is mounted on a universal tensile testing apparatus. In the experiments, three types of mixed concrete were used for UHPC specimens. The tensile strength of these specimens ranges from 9.24 to 11.4 MPa, which is relatively high compared with ordinary concrete specimens, which have a tensile strength ranging from 2 to 5 MPa. In the experimental tests, the UHPC specimen of size 150×60×190 mm with a central hole of 75 mm (in diameter)×60 mm (in thickness) was specially made in the laboratory, and its direct tensile strength was measured by the CTLC device. However, the numerical simulation results for the tensile strength and failure mechanism of the UHPC were very close to those measured experimentally. From comparing the numerical and experimental results obtained in this study, it has been concluded that UHPC can be effectively used for bridge decks.
A linearised buckling analysis of thin-walled beams is addressed in this paper. Beam theories formulated according to a unified approach are presented. The displacement unknown variables on the cross-section of the beam are approximated via Mac Laurin's polynomials. The governing differential equations and the boundary conditions are derived in terms of a fundamental nucleo that does not depend upon the expansion order. Classical beam theories such as Euler-Bernoulli's and Timoshenko's can be retrieved as particular cases. Slender and deep beams are investigated. Flexural, torsional and mixed buckling modes are considered. Results are assessed toward three-dimensional finite element solutions. The numerical investigations show that classical and lower-order theories are accurate for flexural buckling modes of slender beams only. When deep beams or torsional buckling modes are considered, higher-order theories are required.
This paper deals with optimum design criteria for maximum torque density & minimum torque ripple of a Flux Switching Motor (FSM) using response surface methodology (RSM) & finite element method (FEM). The focus of this paper is to find a design solution through the comparison of torque density and torque ripple which vary with rotor shape. And then, a central composite design (CCD) mixed resolution was introduced and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the significance of the fitted regression model. The proposed procedure allows one to define the rotor dimensions, starting from an existing motor or a preliminary design.

To find out an adequate failure criterion in two-dimensional linear elastic crack problems, finite element programs, SED, which determine stress intensity factors $K_I, K_{II}$, crack angle and peak load by the minimum strain energy density failure criterion were developed. In this program, the conventional quadratic isoparametric elements were used in all regions except the crack tip zone where triangular singular elements with 6 nodes were used. The results of SED were compared with the results of those which followed by the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and those by the maximum energy release rate criteria and those by Jenq and Shah`s experiments of the same geometry and material properties. The maximum energy release rate criteria were better close to those of the Jenq and Shah`s experiments than the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and the minimum strain energy density criteria.
