열간압연 마무리 공정에서의 비간섭 루퍼제어 방법 (A Non-Interactive Looper Control for Hot Strip Mill)

  • The Hot Strip Mill(HSM) process consists of reheating furnace, roughing mill, finishing mill and coiler. Reheating furnace heats slab and roughing mill, finishing mill produces strip from this slab. The quality of this production mainly depends on finishing mill, which consists of 6 or 7 stands. Between stands a looper is installed for the better material flow. Automatic gage control(AGC), speed control system and looper system, which are connected with each other, are the main control systems for HSM. The low strip tension can make a loop between stands, which can be caused cobble. On the other hand, high strip tension causes thickness and width reduction, which affects the product quality, and can lead to tear the strip, if it is too high. Because of it, a proper strip tension is needed for better material flow: e.g. A good looper control system is substantial for the better production quality. What is handled in this paper is, the looper controller, which is developed to minimize the fluctuation of width of strip by maintaining an appropriate strip tension between stands and to achieve the stability of the looper control system. And its performance compared with a conventional PID controller is also discussed. The difficulties associated with the maintenance of the constant tension are described.

  • With the increased utilization of CAM programs, end-mill processing is most commonly used for machining and metal processing. In particular, hole or shaft machining has high assembly precision, which inevitably leads to high utilization of end mills. However, the analysis of quality characteristics according to the process conditions of end mills is not performed systematically at the site, causing poor quality and productivity. The most influential factor of quality is the runout of the end mill. In this paper, the number of turns of the end mill, number of tool blades, cutting direction, and artificial runout volume were determined to identify the correlation between the epicenter, cylindricality, and surface roughness. Two types of end mills, three levels of runout, three levels of rotational speed, and two cutting directions were considered and 36 rounds of hole processing were conducted. For the analysis of shape characteristics according to the set process variables, the experimental planning method was applied to the measured specimen and the processing characteristics were analyzed according to the runout of the end mill through correlation analysis.

  • Application of hot roiling oil lubrication technology was broadened to the field of RM stands of Hot Rolling Mill at Pohang works. The primary object was to improve the quality of the strip sttrface and the rolls by oil lubrication in hot rolling process. Prior to the actual field application preliminary test was conducted to evaluate the effect of hot rolling oil lubrication at RM stands. From the test, it has been found that the use of oil lubrication tends to prevent the progression of the heat cracks and thereby increases the quality of the strip surface and the wear life of the rolls. New hot rolling oil lubrication system was applied to the RM stands VSB, R1, R2, R3, R4 and edger rolls. With the introduction of a rolling lubricant, the quality of the strip surface and rolls was improved and overall roll dressing has decreased. Also there has been a improvement of productivity from the long roll life.

미니밀 공정의 회귀식 모델링에 의한 제품품질향상에 관한 연구 (A Study on Product Quality Improvement by Regression Modeling of Mini-Mill Process)

  • Mini-Mill process has been recently in operation at Pohang steel company, which enables more flexible steel coil production on customer demands. The effects of process parameters in Mini-Mill process need to be analyzed not only to make the process stable but also to improve product quality. This work aims to develop a regression model of Mini-Mill process using accumulated product data such that the process parameter effects on product tensile strength may be analyzed. The analysis shows that tensile strength is influenced mainly by the amount of components such as carbon, manganese, silicon, and sulfur. The effect of temperature is shown to be small. It is concluded that control of the components is much more responsible for both meeting the target and reducing the variation of the product tensile strength. Heat treatment is more useful in compensating tensile strength variations due to thickness differences and improving workability and other quality characteristics. More work is necessary for establishing regression expressions of the process that is reliable and accurate enough to dispense with the off-line inspection of the product tensile strength.

  • The biggest challenge facing today's manufacturing industry is better quality and high productivit. From an economic point of view, productivity is the most important parameter, as high productivity will reduce the cost. However, the customers of today are not only cost concerned, but also quality conscious. So high accuracy levels should also be achieved in the manufacturing process. The aim of this paper is to get a comprehensive understanding of its machinability properties and to investigate the relationship between cutting conditions and surface roughness for Ball End Mill cutting process so as to enhance its practical application.

  • A diagnosis methodology for thickness quality in hot finishing mill is proposed based on multivariate statistical analysis. The thickness of hot strip is a key quality factor that is measured by x-ray thickness gauge. Currently, the thickness quality is guaranteed by upper and lower limit of thickness deviation from target thickness. But if any over-limit is occurred, there is no in-line method to identify the causes.   • To fulfill recent requirements for high quality products in steel rolling process, fast responding and easily tunab control system is required and ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic) control system may be one of such alternatives. In this paper characteristics of ILQ control and its application to BUR(Back-Up-Roll) eccentricity in strip rolling mill is discussed and compared to polynomial control approaches. Also the rolling mill model and basic principle to control thickness of srip are introduced with control effect by polynomial methods.

  • The modeling for the looper of a hot strip finishing mill to control the tension of the strip is presented. The looper is an arm pushing against the strip between stands in a tandem mill to keep the strip tension constant and to isolate the interactions of the adjacent stands. Tension is influenced by the difference in mass flow through the up stream and down-stream rolling stands. Tension is critical to strip quality, influencing width, gauge, and shape. This paper presents how looper angle and strip tension are controlled for a hot strip finishing mill.

  • With society focusing more and more on environmental issues, the recycling of materials of all types has become an important concern. In this paper, optimization method is developed for reducing cost and improving quality in mill scale recycling. An experimental investigation into the process parameter effects is presented to determine the optimum configuration of parameters for performance, quality and cost. Taguchi's optimization approach was used to obtain the optimal parameters. The significant parameters were identified and their effects on mill scale recycling were studied. As a results, a confirmation experiment with the optimal levels of process parameters was carried out in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Taguchi method.

공구 형상 및 자세에 따른 금형 자유곡면 가공품질 향상에 관한 연구 (Improvement of Mold-Sculptured Surface Quality Based on Tool Shape and Posture)

  • This paper presents a study on the improvement of the machining quality of sculptured-surfaces of molds according to the shape and posture of the tool. In the existing 3-axis machining, the methods using the ball end-mill and radius end-mill were analyzed for various cutting patterns and compared with those of the 5-axis machining. It was observed that the 5-axis machining using a ball end-mill obtained the finest surface roughness, and for the 3-axis machining, the optimal results were obtained for the one-way machining using a radius end-mill.
