The photocatalytic degradation of salicylic acid takes place in several stages involving coupled phenomena, such as the transport of molecules and the chemical reaction. The systems of transport equations and the photocatalytic reaction are numerically solved using COMSOL Mutiphysics (CM) simulation software. CM will make it possible to couple the phenomena of flow, the transport of pollutants (salicylic acid) by convection and diffusion, and the chemical reaction to the catalytic area (bauxite or TiO2 doped by nanoparticles). The simulation of the conversion rate allows to correctly fit the experimental results. The temporal simulation shows that the reaction reaches equilibrium after a transitional stage lasting over one minute. The outcomes of the study highlight the importance of diffusion in the boundary layer and the usefulness of injecting micro-agitation into the microchannel flow. Under such conditions, salicylic acid degrades completely.

Recently, micro forming process technology have been developed since the size of machine parts become the crucial factor for minimizing of products in general electronic products. Most small machine parts consist of gear and rotation axis and the wear by mechanical contact is known as the primary factor for life reduction of high precision machine part. Lots of studies for mechanical wear and friction have been reported and many researches of MEMS technology have been studied recently. But just few studies for wear of micro or milli sized machine part have teen implemented. In this research, the wear equation is suggested according to the contact shape of axial part in micro or milli sized machine part. And wear analysis model which can predict the magnitude of wear through this suggested equation with numerical analysis program.

Microdroplet deposition in a micro-groove is studied numerically. The droplet shape is determined by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating a sharp-interface modeling technique for accurately enforcing the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface and the no-slip and contact angle conditions at an immersed solid surface. The computations are carried out to investigate the droplet behavior derived by the interfacial characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases. The effects of contact angle, impact velocity and groove geometry on droplet deposition in a micro-groove are quantified.

3D nano-scale manufacturing is an important aspect of advanced manufacturing technology. A key element in ability to view, fabricate, and in some cases operate micro-devices is the availability of tightly focused particle beams, particularly of photons, electrons, and ions. The use of ions is the only way to fabricate directly micro-/ nano-scale structures. It has been utilized as a direct-write method for lithography, implantation, and milling of functional devices. The simulation of ion beam induced physical and chemical phenomena based on sound mathematical models associated with simulation methods is presented for 3D micro-/nanofabrication. The results obtained from experimental investigation and characteristics of ion beam induced direct fabrication will be discussed.

Numerical analysis is applied to model Pt-catalyzed reaction in a micro-scale combustor fueled by butane. The reaction constants of catalytic oxidation are determined from plug flow model with the experimental data. Orders of magnitude between the chemical reaction rate and the mass transfer rate are carefully compared to reveal which mechanism plays a dominant role in the total fuel conversion rate. For various conditions of fuel flow rate and surface temperature, the profiles of Sherwood number are investigated to study the characteristics of the mass transport phenomena in the micro-tube combustor.
Optimal design of serial connected PZT driven micro compressor was investigated. Modeling equations were derived using energy equation and mass conservation equation. The results show that mass flow rate was increased as number of connected micro compresses is increased. As pressure difference between suction port and discharge port in compressor group is increased, connected compressors have much more mass flow rate than single compressor. Mass flow rate is also increased as driving frequency is increased. And optimal design scale is suggested for highest efficiency or highest mass flow rate.

As more high power wide band gap devices are being utilized. the thermal management issues associated with these devices need to be resolved. High power small devices dissipate excessive heat that must be cooled, but traditional cooling methods are insufficient to provide such a cooling means. This paper will evaluate a micro-capillary pumped loop thermal management system that is incorporated into the shim of the device, taking advantage of phase-change to increase the thermal conductivity of the system. The results of the modeling of the thermal management system will be discussed.

An investigation was performed to study the impact damage of the laminated composite plates caused by a low- velocity foreign object with multi-scale modeling based on the concepts of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS)[4]. In the micro-scale part, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. A micro-scalemodel was developed for predicting the initiation of the damage and the extent of the final damage as a function of material properties, laminate configuration and the impactor's mass, etc. Anda macro-scale model was developed for description of global dynamic behavior. The connection betweenmicroscopic and macroscopic is implemented by the tied interface constraints of LS-DYNA contact card. A transient dynamic finite element analysis was adopted for calculating the contact force history and the stresses and strains inside the composites during impact resulting from a point-nose impactor. The low-velocity impact events such as contact force, deformation, etc. are simulated in the macroscopic sense and the impact damages, fiber-breakage, matrix cracking and delamination etc. are examined in the microscopic sense.
We report a method for improving heat exchange between cryo-cooled large-power-dissipation devices and liquid cryogen. Micro-machined monolithic heat sinks were fabricated on a high integration density superconducting Josephson device, and studied for their effect on cooling the device. The monolithic heat sink showed a significant enhancement of cooling capability, which markedly improved the device operation under large dc- and microwave power dissipation. The detailed mechanism of the enhancement still needs further modeling and experiments in order to optimize the design of the heat sink.
