Piercing is the process of shearing a circular hole in sheet metal, whose high shear force makes it difficult to secure the durability of tools. In addition, uneven clearance between tools due to poor alignment of the piercing punch causes accelerated die wear and breakage of the tool. This study reviewed the feasibility of in-situ determining alignment failure during the piercing process by analyzing the signal deviation of a bolt-type piezo sensor installed inside the tool whose alignment level was controlled. Finite element analysis was performed to select the optimal sensor location on the piercing tool for sensitive detection of process signals. A well-aligned piercing process results in uniform deformation in the circumferential direction, and shearing is completed at a stroke similar to the sheet thickness. Afterward, a sharp decrease in shear load is observed. The misaligned piecing punch leads to a gradual decrease in the load after the maximum shear load. This gradual decrease is due to the progressive shear deformation that proceeds in the circumferential direction after the initial crack occurs at the narrow clearance site. Therefore, analyzing the stroke at which the maximum shear load occurs and the load reduction rate after that could detect the misalignment of the piercing punch in real-time.
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of cobalt gallate were synthesized and deposited on gold electrodes using self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) and hydrothermal processing. These MOF films exhibit strong adsorption capabilities for gaseous particulates, and the use of SAMs allows the synthesis and deposition processes to be completed in a single step. When cobalt gallate is mixed with SAMs, a coordination bond is formed between the cobalt ion and the carboxylate or hydroxyl groups of the SAMs, particularly under hydrothermal conditions. Additionally, the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gas sensor accurately measures the number of particulates adsorbed on the MOF films in real-time. Thus, the QCM gas sensor is a valuable tool for quantitatively measuring gases, such as SO2, NO2, and CO2. Furthermore, the QCM MOF film gas sensor was more effective for gas adsorption than the MOF particles alone and allowed the accurate modeling of gas adsorption. Moreover, the QCM MOF films accurately detect the adsorption-desorption mechanisms of SO2 and NO2, which exist as gaseous particulate matter, at specific gas concentrations.
Gas chromatography (GC) separation technology and metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors have been integrated for the effective analysis of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) such as H2S, CH3SH, (CH3)2S, and (CH3)2S2. The separation and detection characteristics of the GC/MOS system using diluted standard gases were investigated for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of VSCs. The typical concentrations of the standard gases were 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 ppm. The GC/MOS system successfully separated H2S, CH3SH, (CH3)2S, and (CH3)2S2 using a celite-filled column. The reproducibility of the retention time measurements was at a 3% relative standard deviation level, and the correlation coefficient (R2) for the VSC concentration was greater than 0.99. In addition, the chromatograms of single and mixed gases were almost identical.
Two types of electronic nose were used for investigating the quality of dried lavers stored at 5, 15, and $30^{\circ}C$ RH of 32, 43, and 75%. The electronic nose is composed of metal oxide sensors, and GC is based on SAW sensor. Quality change in dried lavers was described in terms of the sensitivities $(R_{gas}/R_{air})$ of the sensors. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out using data obtained from six metal oxide sensors. The first principal component scores were correlated with quality changes of dried lavers. As storage time increased, the stored laver cluster separated from that of fresh lavers. A chromatogram was obtained from GC based on SAW sensor. Olfactory image, A $VaporPrint^{TM}$ image for pattern recognition, showed a significant difference between the stored and the fresh samples. Dried lavers during storage at $30^{\circ}C$ and 75% had bacterial counts of $5.7{\times}10^6\;CFU/g$ after 8 day. Increase of microbial count correlated with the response of electronic nose $(r^2=0.87)$. Whereas, color values showed no correlation.

The convergence of artificial intelligence with smart factories or smart mechanical systems has been actively studied to maximize the efficiency and safety. Despite the high improvement of artificial neural networks, their application in the manufacturing industry has been difficult due to limitations in obtaining meaningful data from factories or mechanical systems. Accordingly, there have been active studies on manufacturing components with sensor integration allowing them to generate important data from themselves. Additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of a net shaped product with various materials including plastic, metal, or ceramic parts. With the principle of layer-by-layer adhesion of material, there has been active research to utilize this multi-step manufacturing process, such as changing the material at a certain step of adhesion or adding sensor components in the middle of the additive manufacturing process. Particularly for smart parts manufacturing, researchers have attempted to embed sensors or integrated circuit boards within a three-dimensional component during the additive manufacturing process. While most of the sensor embedding additive manufacturing was based on polymer material, there have also been studies on sensor integration within metal or ceramic materials. This study reviews the additive manufacturing technology for sensor integration into plastic, ceramic, and metal materials.

Capacitive-type humidity sensors with a high sensitivity and fast response/recovery times have attracted a great attention in non-contact respiration biological signal monitoring applications. However, complicated fabrication processes involving high-temperature heat treatment for the hygroscopic film is essential in the conventional ceramic-based humidity sensors. In this study, a non-toxic ceramic/metal halide (BaTiO3(BT)/NaCl) humidity sensor was prepared at room temperature using a solvent-free aerosol deposition process (AD) without any additional process. Currently prepared BT/NaCl humidity sensor shows an excellent sensitivity (245 pF/RH%) and superior response/recovery times (3s/4s) due to the NaCl ionization effect resulting in an immense interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the non-contact respiration signal variation using the BT/NaCl sensor was determined to be over 700% by maintaining the distance of 20 cm between the individual and the sensor. Through the AD-fabricated sensor in this study, we expect to develop a non-contact biological signal monitoring system that can be applied to various fields such as respiratory disease detection and management, infant respiratory signal observation, and touchless skin moisture sensing button.

Label-free, sensitive and selective detection methods with high spatial resolution are critically required for future applications in chemical sensor, biological sensor, and nanospectroscopic imaging. Here I describe the development of Plasmon Resonance Energy Transfer (PRET)-based molecular imaging in living cells as the first demonstration of intracellular imaging with PRET-based nanospectroscopy. In-vivo PRET imaging relied on the overlap between plasmon resonance frequency of gold nanoplasmonic probe (GNP) and absorption peak frequencies of conjugated molecules, which leads to create 'quantized quenching dips' in Rayleigh scattering spectrum of GNP. The position of these dips exactly matched with the absorption peaks of target molecules. As another innovative application of PRET, I present a highly selective and sensitive detection of metal ions by creating conjugated metal-ligand complexes on a single GNP. In addition to conferring high spatial resolution due to the small size of the metal ion probes (50 nm in diameter), this method is 100 to 1,000 folds more sensitive than organic reporter-based methods. Moreover, this technique achieves high selectivity due to the selective formation of Cu2+complexes and selective resonant quenching of GNP by the conjugated complexes. Since many metal ion ligand complexes generate new absorption peak due to the d-d transition in the metal ligand complex when a specific metal ion is inserted into the complex, we can match with the scattering frequency of nanoplasmonic metal ligand systems and the new absorption peak.
In this paper, we propose a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) binary image sensor with a gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector using a double-tail comparator for high-speed and low-power operations. The GBT photodetector is based on a PMOSFET tied with a floating gate (n+ polysilicon) and a body that amplifies the photocurrent generated by incident light. A double-tail comparator compares an input signal with a reference voltage and returns the output signal as either 0 or 1. The signal processing speed and power consumption of a double-tail comparator are superior over those of conventional comparator. Further, the use of a double-sampling circuit reduces the standard deviation of the output voltages. Therefore, the proposed CMOS binary image sensor using a double-tail comparator might have advantages, such as low power consumption and high signal processing speed. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor is designed and simulated using the standard 0.18 ㎛ CMOS process.

In this research, it have developed a sensor that could diagnose inner deterioration of covered wires. With this sensor it observed results from simulation, and the attribute required for realization. For simulation it have used FLUX, it have considered all of geometric and electromagnetic information from coil and base metal that influences eddy current sensor's property in order to predict the final result. It assumed there is no mutual inductance in the coil with N number of turns, because equivalent current flows in coil that is continuously connected in eddy current sensor. It assumed circular coil loop draws a circle, always have self inductance, and they are connected in series and overlapped according number of turns (N) in coil, and bobbin configuration. Actual sensor was produced with consideration of inductance and number of turns (N). In conclusion, it were able to test the dependency through results from simulation, actual measurement, and modeling of simulation. It is considered that attributes of respective base metal and structure can be predicted by simulating in advance.
Ionic polymer-metal composite(IPMC) consists of an ion conductive membrane plated by metallic electrodes on both surfaces. When it bends, a voltage is generated between two electrodes. Since IPMC is flexible and thin, it can be easily mounted on the various surfaces of a body. The present study investigates a sensor system using IPMC to effectively detect the bending angles applied on IPMC sensor. The paper evaluates several R and C circuit models that describe the physical composition of IPMC and selects the best model for the detection of angles. The circuit models implemented with a charge model describe the relationship between input bending angles and output voltages. The identification of R and C values was performed by minimizing the error between the real output voltages and the simulated output voltages from the circuit models of IPMC sensor. Then the output signal of a sensor was fed into the inverse model of the identified model to reproduce the bending angles. In order to support the validation of the model, the output voltages from an arbitrary bending motion were also applied to the selected inverse model, which successfully reproduced the arbitrary bending motion.
