  • Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical stability of implants with acid-etched surfaces sandblasted with alumina using retrospective analyses of the survival rate, success rate, primary and secondary stability, complications, and marginal bone loss of the implants. Methods: Patients who had implants placed (TS III SA, SS II SA, SS III SA, and U III SA) with SA surfaces from Osstem (Osstem Implant Co., Busan, Korea) at the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, from January 2008 to December 2010 were selected for the study. Patients' medical records and radiographs (panorama, periapical view) were retrospectively analyzed to investigate sex, age, location of implantation, diameter, and length of the implants, initial and secondary stability, presence of bone grafting, types of bone grafting and membranes, early and delayed complications, marginal bone loss, and implant survival rate. Results: Ninety-six implants were placed in 45 patients. Five implants were removed during the follow-up period for a total survival rate of 94.8%. There were 14 cases of complications, including 6 cases of early complications and 8 cases of delayed complications. All five implants that failed to survive were included in the early complications. The survival of implants was significantly associated with the occurrence of complications and the absorption of bone greater than 1 mm within 1 year after prosthetic completion. In addition, the absorption of bone greater than 1 mm within 1 year after prosthetic completion was significantly associated with the occurrence of complications, primary stability, and implant placement method. Five cases that failed to survive were all included in the early complications criteria such as infection, failure of initial osseointegration, and early exposure of the fixture. Conclusions: Of the 96 cases, 5 implants failed resulting in a 94.8% survival rate. The failed implants were all cases of early complications such as infection, failure of initial osseointegration, and early exposure of the fixtures. Periimplantitis was mostly addressed through conservative and/or surgical treatment and resulted in very low prosthetic complications. Therefore, if preventive measures are taken to minimize initial complications, the results can be very stable.

  • With a striking increase in the level of contamination and subsequent degradations in the environment, detection and monitoring of contaminants in various sites has become a crucial mission in current society. In this review, we have summarized the current research areas in membrane-based colorimetric sensors for trace detection of various molecules. The researches covered in this summary utilize membranes composed of cellulose fibers as sensing platforms and metal nanoparticles or fluorophores as optical reagents. Displaying decent or excellent sensitivity, most of the developed sensors achieve a significant selectivity in the presence of interfering ions. The physical and chemical properties of cellulose membrane platforms can be customized by changing the synthesis method or type of optical reagent used, allowing a wide range of applications possible. Membrane-based sensors are also portable and have great mechanical properties, which enable on-site detection of contaminants. With such superior qualities, membrane-based sensors examined in the researches were used for versatile purposes including quantification of heavy metals in drinking water, trace detection of toxic antibiotics and heavy metals in environmental water samples. Some of the sensors exhibited additional features like antimicrobial ability and recyclability. Lastly, while most of the sensors aimed for a detection enabled by naked eyes through rapid colour change, many of them investigated further detection methods like fluorescence, UV-vis spectroscopy, and RGB colour intensity.

  • Sinus lift procedure is frequently required for the maxillary molar implant placement. Previous studies have demonstrated alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) can maintain the dimensions of ridge height and width. However, there is a lack of studies which evaluated the effect of ARP to avoid sinus lift procedure. Purpose of this study is to describe a method reducing the need of sinus lift surgery by ARP in maxillary molar areas and to assess the feasibility clinically, radiologically and histologically. Ten maxillary molars in ten patients had severe vertical bone resorption with minimal residual bone height. They were considered having the high possibility of the necessity of sinus lift procedure for dental implant after the extraction. After extraction, open healing ARP with deproteinized bovine bone mineral mixed with 10% collagen and resorbable collagen membranes was performed. After sufficient healing, dental implants were placed, and evaluated clinically and radiologically. Histological observation was conducted just before the implantation in one patient. Implants were successfully placed without sinus lift in all ten cases. All the implants were restored with no sign of complications, and patients are now in a close follow-up up to 20 months post-loading. Histological observation showed minimal inflammatory reaction and newly formed bone was substantially noted. The ARP technique has successfully avoided the sinus lift surgeries. It appears that this procedure may improve the simplicity of the clinical process for the clinicians and reduce the discomfort of patients.

  • Membrane proteins are involved in many common diseases, including heart disease and cancer. In various disease states, such as cancer, abnormal signaling pathways that are related to the membrane proteins cause the cells to divide out of control and the expression of membrane proteins can be altered. Membrane proteins have the hydrophobic environment of a lipid bilayer, which makes an analysis of the membrane proteins notoriously difficult. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of two different methods for optimal membrane protein extraction. High-speed centrifuge and reagent-based method with a -/+ filter aided sample preparation (FASP) were compared. As a result, the high-speed centrifuge method is quite effective in analyzing the mitochondrial inner membranes, while the reagent-based method is useful for endoplasmic reticulum membrane analysis. In addition, the function of the membrane proteins extracted from the two methods were analyzed using GeneGo software. GO processes showed that the endoplasmic reticulum-related responses had higher significance in the reagent-based method. An analysis of the process networks showed that one cluster in the high-speed centrifuge method and four clusters in the reagent-based method were visualized. In conclusion, the two methods are useful for the analysis of different subcellular membrane proteins, and are expected to assist in selecting the membrane protein extraction method by considering the target subcellular membrane proteins for study.

  • $Nafion/TiO_2$ composite membranes were prepared via an in-situ sol-gel process with different immersing periods from 1 day to 7 days for the low humidifying proton exchange membrane fuel cell. As the immersing time increased, the $TiO_2$ content within the Nafion membrane increased. The contact angle decreased with the increased $TiO_2$ content in the composite membrane due to the increased hydrophilicity. The water uptake and proton conductivity reached to the highest level for 4 day immersing period, then decreased as the immersing period increased. A 7 days of immersing time was shown to be too long because too much $TiO_2$ aggregates were formed on the membrane surface as well as interior of the membrane, interfering the proton transfer from anode to cathode. Cell performance results were in good agreement with those of the water uptake and proton conductivity; current densities under a relative humidity (RH) of 40% were 0.54, 0.6, $0.63A/cm^2$ and $0.49A/cm^2$ for the immersing time of 1, 3, 4 and 7 days, respectively at a 0.6 V. The composite membrane prepared via the in-situ sol-gel process exhibited the enhancement in the cell performance under of RH 40% by a maximum of about 66% compared to those of using the recasting composite membrane and Nafion 115.

  • Free radicals are known to inhibit hair vitality by damaging the cell membranes of the hair follicles. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activities and the capacity for hair loss prevention of extracts from Platycodon grandiflorum. We prepared butanol (BF) and water (WF) fractions from P. grandiflorum. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were measured to investigate the antioxidant activities of the fractions. Both fractions exhibited dose-dependent antioxidant activities for DPPH radical production, and BF and WF almost completely suppressed ABTS radical production when supplied at 10 and 100 mg/ml, respectively. We confirmed a skin regeneration effect by treating human HaCaT skin cells with a range of BF and WF concentrations for 24 and 48 hr. The extract treatments accelerated cell proliferation. We also assayed the capacity of BF and WF to suppress inflammation using RAW264.7 cells. BF dose-dependently suppressed nitrous oxide (NO) production. Treatment of human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC) with BF and WF promoted cell proliferation after 24, 48, and 72 hr of treatment when supplied at 10, 50, 100, and $200{\mu}g/ml$. Taken together, these results confirm the possibility of using BF and WF extracts from P. grandiflorum in formulating hair loss prevention products.

  • Much research has been made for finding new and eco-friendly alternative sources of energy to solve the problems related with the pollution caused by emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide as the use of fossil fuels increases worldwide. Among them, fuel cells draws particular interests as an eco-friendly energy generator because only water is obtained as a by-product. Anion exchange membrane-based alkaline fuel cell (AEMFC) that uses anion exchange membrane as an electrolyte is of increased interest recently because of its advantages in using low-cost metal catalyst unlike the PEMFC (potton exchange membrane fuel cell) due to the high-catalyst activity in alkaline conditions. The main properties required as an anion exchange membrane are high hydroxide conductivity and chemical stability at high pH. Recently we reported a chemically crosslinked poly(2-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) by reacting PPO with N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine as novel anion exchange membranes. In the current work, we further developed the same crosslinked polymer but having enhanced physicochemical properties, including higher conductivity, increased mechanical and dimensional stabilities by using the PPO with a higher molecular weight and also by increasing the crosslinking density. The obtained polymer membrane also showed a good cell performance.

  • Perovskite-type oxides have consistently attracted considerable attention for their applications in high-temperature electrochemical devices, such as electrolytes and electrodes of solid oxide fuel cells, oxygen permeating membranes and sensors etc. Among them, the electrical conductivity of 10 % Sr and 10 % Mg doped $LaAlO_3$ (LSAM9191) was measured using impedance spectroscopy and 4-probe d.c. method. Below $550^{\circ}C$, the grain boundary resistance mostly determined the overall conductivity; however, it nearly disappeared above $800^{\circ}C$. Using the defect model and curve fitting, the ionic and electronic conductivity contributions were also separated. In the temperature region where the sample resistance is mostly determined by the grain volume property, LSAM9191 was an oxygen ion conductor at low $Po_2$ and a mixed conductor at high $Po_2$. With increasing temperature, the ionic conduction region only slightly increased. Thus, LSAM9191 is a promising material as an oxygen ion conductor at high temperature and in low $Po_2$.

  • n this study, the evaluation of performance of AORFB using anthraquinone derivative and TEMPO derivative as active materials in neutral supporting electrolyte with various membrane types was performed. Both anthraquinone derivative and TEMPO derivative showed high electron transfer rate (the difference between anodic and cathodic peak potential was 0.068 V) and the cell voltage is 1.17 V. The single cell test of the AORFB using 0.1 M active materials in 1 M KCl solution with using Nafion 212 membrane, which is commercial cation exchange membrane was performed, and the charge efficiency (CE) was 97% and voltage efficiency (VE) was 59%. In addition, the discharge capacity was $0.93Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}$ which is 35% of theoretical capacity ($2.68Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}$) at $4^{th}$ cycle and the capacity loss rate was $0.018Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}/cycle$ during 10 cycles. The single cell tests were performed with using Nafion 117 membrane and SELEMION CSO membrane. However, the results were more not good because of increased resistance because of thicker thickness of membrane and increased cross-over of active materials, respectively.

  • In the recent, as a world demand of energy resources has been transformed from fossil fuels to hydrogen-based clean energy resources, a huge attention has been attracted to increase the performance and decrease a production cost of core materials in fuel cell technology. The utilization of reinforced composite membranes as electrolytes in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells can reduce the use of high cost perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA), mitigate the cell impedance, and improve the dimensional stability as well as the interfacial stability, giving rise to achieve both an improved performance and a reduction of production costs of the fuel cell devices. In this study, we investigate the effects of physical characteristics and cell performances according to the various ionomer solvents in the solution based manufacturing process of reinforced composite electrolyte membrane.
