  • The purpose of this paper is to study the propagation of Rayleigh waves in an anisotropic heterogeneous crustal layer over a gravitational semi-infinite sandy substratum. It is assumed that the heterogeneity in the crustal layer arises due to exponential variation in elastic coefficients and density whereas the semi-infinite sandy substratum has homogeneous sandiness parameters. The coupled effects of heterogeneity, anisotropy, sandiness parameters and gravity on Rayleigh waves are discussed analytically as well as numerically. The dispersion relation is obtained in determinant form. The proposed model is solved to obtain the different dispersion relations for the Rayleigh wave in the elastic medium of different properties. The results presented in this study may be attractive and useful for mathematicians, seismologists and geologists.

  • The two dimensional problem of a layered tribological system(TiN/Steel) containing a vertical surface breaking crack and subject to rolling contact is considered in this study. Using finite elements and stress extrapolation method, a series of preliminary models are developed. Preliminary results indicate that the extrapolation technique is valid to determine Modes I and II stress intensity factors for cracks. In the case of TiN/Steel medium, KI and KII were determined for variations in crack length, layer thickness, and load location. The results show that KII reaches maximum values when the contact is adjacent to the crack where Mode I stresses are compressive. KII values decrease with decreased crack length and significantly decrease for reduced layer thickness.

  • Medium carbon steel was aluminized by hot dipping into molten Al or Al-1%Si baths. After hot-dipping in these baths, a thin Al-rich topcoat and a thick alloy layer rich in $Al_5Fe_2$ formed on the surface. A small a mount of FeAl and $Al_3Fe$ was incorporated in the alloy layer. Silicon from the Al-1%Si bath was uniformly distributed throughout the entire coating. The hot dipping increased the microhardness of the steel by about 8 times. Heating at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ however decreased the microhardness through interdiffusion between the coating and the substrate. The oxidation at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ in air formed a thin protective ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer, which provided good oxidation resistance. Silicon was oxidized to amorphous silica, exhibiting a glassy oxide surface.

  • The existence of SH-wave in a piezomagnetic layer overlying an initially stressed orthotropic half-space is investigated. The coupled of differential equations are solved for piezomagnetic layer overlying an orthotropic elastic half-space. The general dispersion equation has been derived for both magnetically open circuit and magnetically closed circuits under the four types of boundary conditions. In the absence of the piezomagnetic properties, initial stress and orthotropic properties of the medium, the dispersion equations reduce to classical Love equation. The SH-wave velocity has been calculated numerically for both magnetically open circuit and closed circuits. The effect of initial stress and magnetic permeability are illustrated by graphs in both the cases. The velocity of SH-wave decreases with the increment of wave number.

  • We investigated the growth characteristics and interfacial properties of $HfO_2$ films deposited on Ge substrate through atomic layer deposited (ALD) by using an in-situ medium energy ion scattering analysis. The growth kinetics of $HfO_2$ grown on a $GeO_2/Ge$ substrate through ALD is similar to that grown on an $SiO_2/Si$ substrate. However, the incubation period of $HfO_2$ deposition on Ge is shorter than that on Si. The $HfO_2$ grown on the GeO/Ge substrate shows a significant diffusion of Hf atoms into the substrate interface and GeO volatilization after annealing at $700^{\circ}C$. The presence of low-quality Ge oxide or suboxide may degrade the electrical performance of device.

  • An efficient protocol for shoot regeneration was developed for sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) internodes using the transverse thin cell layer (tTCL) culture method. The frequency of shoot regeneration and the number of adventitious buds produced from regenerated shoots depend significantly on explant age, thickness of the tTCL sections, and the phytohormones supplemented to the culture medium. A combination of 6-benzyladenine (2.0 $mg\;l^{-1}$) and a-naphthaleneacetic acid (0.5 $mg\;l^{-1}$) was found to be the best phytohormone combination for shoot bud induction, with the maximum number of shoots obtained when the tTCL sections were 0.5-1.0 mm thick and derived from 4- to 6-week-old seedlings of sesame. Well-developed shoots were rooted on MS medium without phytohormones, and 80% of the regenerated plantlets were successfully established in soil.

  • Wearable computer systems use the wireless universal serial bus (WUSB), which refers to USB technology that is merged with WiMedia physical layer and medium access control layer (PHY/MAC) technical specifications. WUSB can be applied to wireless personal area network (WPAN) applications as well as wired USB applications such as PAN. WUSB specifications have defined high-speed connections between a WUSB host and WUSB devices for compatibility with USB 2.0 specifications. In this paper, we focus on an integrated system with a WUSB over an IEEE 802.15.6 wireless body area network (WBAN) for wireless wearable computer systems. Due to the portable and wearable nature of wearable computer systems, the WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6 hierarchical medium access control (MAC) protocol has to support power saving operations and integrate WUSB transactions with WBAN traffic efficiently. In this paper, we propose a low-power hibernation technique (LHT) for WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6 hierarchical MAC to improve its energy efficiency. Simulation results show that the LHT also integrates WUSB transactions and WBAN traffic efficiently while it achieves high energy efficiency.

  • In this paper, the thermal shock responses of collinear cracks in a layered medium are investigated based on the uncoupled, quasi-static plane thermoelasticity. The medium is modeled as a bonded structure composed of a surface layer and a semi-infinite substrate. Between these two dissimilar homogeneous constituents, a functionally graded interfacial zone exists with the nonhomogeneous features of continuously varying thermoelastic properties. Three cracks are assumed to be present in the layered medium, one in each one of the constituent materials, aligned collinearly normal to the nominal interfaces. A system of singular integral equations is solved, subjected to the forcing terms of equivalent transient thermal tractions acting on the locations of cracks via superposition. Main results presented are the transient thermal stress intensity factors to illustrate the parametric effects of various geometric and amterial combinations of the medium with the thermoelastically graded interfacial zone and the collinear cracks.

  • The plane elasticity problem of collinear cracks in a layered medium is investigated. The medium is modeled as bonded structure constituted from a surface layer and a semi-infinite substrate. Along the bond line between the two dissimilar homegeneous constituents, it is assumed that as interfacial zone having the functionally graded, nonhomogeneous elastic modulus exists. The layered medium contains three collinear cracks, one in each constituent material oriented perpendicular to the nominal interfaces. The stiffness matrix formulation is utilized and a set of homogeneous conditions relevant to the given problem is readily satisfied. The proposed mixed boundary value problem is then represented in the form of a system of integral equations with Cauchy-type singular kernels. The stress intensity factors are defined from the crack-tip stress fields possessing the standard square-root singular behavior. The resulting values of stress intensity factors mainly address the interactions among the cracks for various crack sizes and material combinations.

  • This study evaluated the importance between the major indicators of living SOC in small and medium cities. AHP layer analysis was performed on a group of experts and their importance and priorities were evaluated. The results of the assessment are as follows: First, the village(walking) living zone was considered relatively more important than the local hub(vehicle) living zone. Second, the importance of health care in the local hub(vehicle) living area was assessed to be the most important in the comprehensive evaluation. Third, medical care, care, education and convenience in the village(walking) living area were ranked second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Fourth, the relative importance of physical education, learning, physical education, learning, relaxation, culture and village(walking) living areas in the local hub(vehicle) living areas were valued low. It is necessary to seek living SOC policies and directions in consideration of the special nature of urban social structure in small and medium-sized cities in Korea.
