  • This study examined the structural relationship between children's academic stress, grit, executive function difficulty, and media device addiction. Data on 1,132 children and their mothers from the 11th (2018)Panel Study on Korean Children were used for the study. Data were collected by Academic Stress Scale, Grit Scale-Children, Child-Adolescent Self-reported Executive Function Difficulty Screening Questionnaire, and K-Internet Addiction Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0 program with Pearson correlation, structural equation model and bootstrapping. The main results were as follows. 1) Children's academic stress had a negative influence on their grit. 2) Children's grit had a negative influence on their executive function difficulty and media device addiction. 3) Children's executive function difficulty had a positive influence on their media device addiction. 4) The relationship between children's academic stress and media device addiction was mediated by their grit and executive function difficulty. This study is significant in the sense that it found protective factors and risk factors for children's addiction to media devices. We suggest that children's grit be improved, and their academic stress and executive function difficulty be reduced to prevent and mediate children's media device addiction.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to examine the significant factors affecting media device addiction using the data mining technique for large-scale data from the Panel Study on Korean Children Survey (PSKC). The PSKC data of this study were gathered from the elementary school students in their 10th survey (1,286 3rd grade students). Methods: The SPSS 21.0 program was used for data mining decision tree analysis, and the results are as follows. Results: First, the most important predictor of media device addiction was planning-organization which was among the sub-factors of executive function. Second, as a result of the decision tree analysis, the children with the highest probability of addiction to media devices were ones that had difficulties in planning and organizing, had mothers with a permissive parenting attitude felt difficulties in controlling behavior, and were alone at home for more than two hours a day without any adult supervision. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study can help guide the direction of future research related to children's addiction to media devices by exploring and analyzing factors that significantly affect children's addiction to media devices.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of parental self-esteem on late school-aged children's media device addiction by mediating marital conflict and children's self-esteem. Methods: This study used data from the 11th (2018) Panel Study on Korean Children. The participants consisted of 1,082 family triads (fathers, mothers, and children). Data were collected using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Marital Conflict Scale, and K-Internet Addiction Scale. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with SPSS/WIN 27.0 and Mplus 8.7. Results: The final model showed a good fit for the data. Children's media device addiction was directly related to mothers' self-esteem, mothers' marital conflict, and children's self-esteem. Fathers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating both fathers' and mothers' marital conflict. In addition, mothers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating mothers' marital conflict. Conclusion: The findings indicates that self-esteem and marital conflict for both fathers and mothers have a significant effect on children's media device addiction. It suggests that more attention might be given to fathers and mothers in developing interventions to prevent children's media device addiction.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore types of longitudinal changes in interactions between mothers and 4-year-old children in primary school as well as the effects on media device addiction. To explore interaction types between mothers and children, latent class growth modeling (LCGM) and BCH were used in a three-step approach. Data from the 6-10th wave of the Panel Study of Korea Children were used. First, the trajectory of the mother-child interactions was linear and decreased across time. This linear decrease was classified into the following three trajectories: high-decreasing, average-deceasing, and low-decreasing. Second, BCH was performed to examine media device addiction in each trajectory, and the findings show that children who had low initial mother-child interactions over time were more likely to experience daily disturbances in adaptive functions such as withdraw or tolerance than other groups of children. The results indicate that maximizing the quality of mother-child interactions in childhood through primary school can lower media device addiction in children.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the mental model of young adolescents' media environment and the use and to provide several educational suggestions drawing on the revealed model. For this, the data were collected through 4 activities such as interview, picture drawings, word association experiment, and sentence completion task with ten 4-5th graders in elementary schools; they were qualitatively analyzed by 2 researchers. First, the meaning components driven by sentence completion task, word association experiment were totally 6 components: media device, connection(alienation), competence(provision), entertainment, adverse effects, ambilaterality. Second, the components of media mental model driven by pictures were 4 components: functions/competence, entertainment, conflict with paper books/sharing, harmfulness/ambilaterality. Third, the components from interview consisted of conflict between paper books and electronic media, communication-centeredness, fear(addiction) and users' qualification. Based on those results, careful examination in cyber talk, necessity of addiction prevention, active development of learning media and their balanced utilization with books, and healthful media literacy education and reinforcement of critical thinking were suggested.

  • While the development of digital media has positive aspects of knowledge enlargement and a new communication channel, it also demonstrates a lot of unexpected defects, such as personal isolation, addiction, obsession or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity. Thus, the author considers it is urgent to develop the contents specifically designed for children in this new digital environment and would like to propose the combined Children's device and contents using the new concept of Mixed Reality. The Mixed Reality that mixes real world and virtual world provides the opportunity that can experience the new concept of play education by using touchable interface of children's real life toy cars together with the virtual world in the smart phones. This Mixed Reality that is extended from sole senses will lead the children to develop the concentration, sense of reality and imagination and also to experience the enlarged play and education concept.

  • With wide spread of smart devices, the use of children's smart devices were increased. We have performed an exploratory study about children's use of smart devices in the viewpoint of lives of children. The children was encouraged on the school centered learning by their parents. In this study, we wanted to explore the state of life of children's using of smart devices in the view of the children's life at the age of information society. The results show that there was a difference in children's using of smart devices between big and small city. This research shows that the students have the lack of the experiences of learning of desired usages and learning with devices. In the play with the non-electronic media, outside play was more than indoor play. Half of the answers at the amount of time to play the game and to watch the TV were "within an 1 hour". We know that the proportion of children's indoor play portion is more than outdoor play of it.
