Despite of the increasing number of the application of the drilled shaft pile in construction site, most of the study of pile capacity has been centered side shear resistance. But it is common that the drilled shaft is socketed on the rock so as to use the bearing resistance, so prediction of the toe's movement and characteristic of the bearing capacity is important as the side shear resistance. Therefore the model tests were performed in order to study the characteristic of bearing capacity on rock mass. The material of the test blocks were the mortar which was mixed with sand, cement and water, and test block size was $240{\times}240{\times}240mm$. Load was pressed by the 45mm of diameter of miniaturized pile and plate jack and steal plate were used to the confined stress for representing the underground condition. The relation of load-displacement was measured in many different conditions of rock mass such as direction of discontinuities, spacing and strength, and q-w curves of the toe of the pile were verified in each condition.
Successful design, construction and maintenance of NATM tunnel demands prediction, control, stability estimation and monitoring of surface settlement, gradient and ground displacement with high accuracy. Back analysis using measured data and forward analysis have been and are indispensable tools to achieve this goal. Sakurai provided the hazard warning levels for assessing the stability of tunnels using the relation of critical strain and apparent Young's modulus. This paper performed the estimation of tunnel stability on construction. Firstly, the apparent Young's modulus concept and back analysis method is introduced for the assessment of tunnel safety during excavation a brief framework. Secondly, this paper deals with case study using "Apparent Young's modulus" and "Back analysis" for the purpose of estimating the stability of NATM tunnel in Korea. Finally, a general method that can be estimated the tunnel stability discussed by a flow chart.
Despite of the increasing number of the application of drilled shaft piles in construction site, most studies on pile capacity have been focused on the side shear resistance. But it is common that the drilled shaft is socketed on the rock so as to use its bearing resistance. The prediction of the end movement and characteristics of the bearing capacity of the pile is great important as well. Therefore, a series of scaled model tests were carried out in order to study the characteristics of the bearing capacity on rock mass. The material of the test block was cement mortar which was mixed with sand, cement and water, and the size of a test block size was $240{\times}240{\times}240mm$. The axial load was applied by a miniaturized pile of 45mm in diameter and flat jacks and steel plate were used for confinement to simulate the real underground loading conditions. The relation of load-displacement was measured in various different conditions of rock mass such as strength, discontinuity of the rock mass and in-situ stress, so q-w curves of the end of the pile were presented for each condition.
For the cassion type of breakwater under the condition of large wave loads, stability about lateral movement of breakwater was investigated by performing centrifuge model experiments. Prototype of breakwater was modelled by scaling down to centrifuge model and the soft ground reinforced with grouting was also reconstructed in the centrifuge model experiments. Sandy ground beneath breakwater was prepared with a soil sampled in field so that identical value of internal friction angle could be obtained. Centrifuge model experiments were carried out to reconstruct the construction sequence in field. Lateral static wave load was applied to the model caisson after the final stage of construction sequence was rebuilt and the measured lateral movement of caisson was compared with allowable value by the code to assess the stability about lateral movement of the breakwater.
In this study, an acceleration sensor that has optical fibers to measure the inclination and acceleration of a structure through contradictory changes in two-component FBG sensors was examined. The proposed method was to ensure precise measurement through the unification of the deformation rate sensor and the angular displacement sensor. A high sensitivity three-axis accelerometer was designed and prepared using this method. To verify the accuracy of the accelerometer, the change in wavelength according to temperature and tension was tested. Then, the change in wavelength of the prepared accelerometer according to the sensor angle, and that of the sensor according to the change in ambient temperature were measured. According to the test results on the FBG-based vibration sensor that was developed using a high-speed vibrator, the range in measurement was 0.7 g or more, wavelength sensitivity, 2150 pm/g or more, and the change in wavelength change, $9.5pm/^{\circ}C$.
Objectives: For the traditional pulse diagnosis in Oriental Medicine, not only the pulse shape in time domain, but the width, length and depth of arterial pulse also should be measured. However, conventional pulse diagnostic systems have failed to measure the spatial parameters of the arterial pulse e.g. effective length of arterial pulse in the wrist. In fact, there are many ways to measure that kind of spatial features in arterial pulsation, but among them, the method using image sensor provides relatively cheap and simple way, therefore I tested feasibility of measuring 2-dimensional pressure distribution by imaging devices. Methods: Using widely used PC cameras and dotted balloons, the subtle oscillation of skin over the radial artery was recorded continuously, and then the displacement of every dot was calculated. Consequently, the time course of that displacements shows arterial pulse wave. Results: By the proposed method I could get pressure distribution map with 30Hz sampling rate, 21steps quantization resolution, and approximately 1mm spatial resolution. With reduced quantization resolution, $3cm{\times}4cm$ view angle could be achieved. Conclusion: Although this method has some limitations, it would be useful method for detecting 2-dimensional features of arterial pulse, and accordingly, this method provides a novel way to detect 'narrow pulse', 'wide pulse', 'long pulse', 'short pulse', and their derivatives.
The negative skin friction on piles, which are installed in currently consolidating soft deposits, creates significant problems on the stability of pile foundations. This study investigated whether or not the pile foundation designs were appropriate in soft deposits with large amount of consolidation settlement. The final settlements of the grounds along the pile depth were estimated by the soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests and by the field-measured settlement curves, if they were available. The displacement of the piles along the pile depth was estimated by both the load transfer method and the numerical method. Both methods gave similar locations of neutral points and magnitudes of the maximum axial forces. The movements of the ground and the piles were compared to calculate the down drag acting on piles. For the piles whose bearing capacities were less than the design loads including the down drag, slip layer coatings and/or incrementing of the penetration depth into the bearing stratum were proposed to improve the piles capacities.
Transducer for ultrasonic linear motor with the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes was studied. The ultrasonic linear motor consists of two Langevin type piezoelectric vibrators that cross at right angles with each other in tip. In order to excite symmetric and anti-symmetric modes, the transducer must have a phase shift of 90 degree in space and time. Therefore, the tip of transducer moves on an elliptical motion. In this paper, the finite element analysis was used to optimize dimension and displacement of the transducer. The ultrasonic motor was fabricated using the simulated result and the driving characteristics were measured. No-load velocity was 0.28[m/s] and the maximum efficiency was 30[%] in resonance frequency.
An ultrasonic motor of high torque with a new configuration for application in automobiles is proposed. The newly designed stator is a two sided vibrator consisting of a toothed metal disk with a piezoelectric ceramic ring bonded on both faces of the disk which generates a flexural traveling wave along the circumference of disk. In this configuration, the displacement on the surface of stator may not be confined. It also produces a large vibrating force and amplitude because the vibrator is sandwiched by two piezoelectric plates. It is possible to increase the torque by improving the vibration characteristics. To compute the vibration mode of the motor of diameter 48 mm, the finite element method was used. A 6th mode was chosen as the operation mode with a resonance frequency of about 64.4 kHz. According to this design and measured its performance, a prototype was fabricated. The performance measurement of the prototype motor showed that its stall torque was about 1.8 Nm and efficiency was 37% at 60% of the maximum torque.
