  • The rapid impact assessment matrix (RIAM) might be a new tool for performance of an environmental impact assessment (EIA), comparing with many traditional methods of EIA, which have produced large reports setting out the subjective judgement reached by the assessors. The main criticisms of E1A are in part a natural result of the traditional method used. RIAM uses a structured matrix to allow for such judgement, both subjective and those based on quantitative data, to be made on a like-by-like basis, and provided a transparent and permanent record of the judgement made. Also, the computerized RIAM system using software program allows for the matrix to be shown in graphical form, which greatly enhances the clarity of the results produced by this method. RIAM provides a system by which development options and scenarios can be rapidly evaluated. To illustrate the use of RIAM, an example from an EIA study using application of scoping by assessment criteria in Environmental Impact Regulation of Korea was given. The criteria that might be used to evaluation EIA methods, and how RIAM measures up against these criteria, are discussed.

  • We investigated the quench characteristics accordance with increase of turns and applied voltage of matrix-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with $1{\times}3$ matrixes. The matrix-type SFCL consists of the trigger part to apply magnetic field and the current-limiting part to limit fault current. The fault current limiting characteristics according to the increase of magnetic field and applied voltage were nearly same. This is because the application of magnetic field has not an affect on total impedance of SFCL. When number of turns of reactor increased, the voltage difference between two superconducting units in the current-limiting part according was decreased. The resistance difference generated in two superconducting units also was decreased. Therefore, we confirmed that the differences of critical behaviors between superconducting units by application of magnetic field were decreased. By this results, we could be decided the optimum number of turns of reactor to apply magnetic field.

  • A shipyard is an Engineer To Order (ETO) company that designs and manufactures new products when orders are placed. Various tasks are concurrently performed, thereby making process management considerably important. It is particularly important to plan and control production activities because production constitutes the largest part of the overall process. Therefore, this study focuses on the development of a production planning system based on an Advanced Planning System (APS). An APS is an integrated planning system that targets supply chain processes in accordance with the principles of hierarchical planning. In this study, a Supply Chain Planning Matrix (SCP-Matrix), which is used as a guideline for APS development, is designed through analysis of shipyard cases. Then, we define the process in detail, starting from long-term production plan as the initial application, and design and implement a long-term production planning system using a component-based development.

  • The objective of this work is to study the sue of precise triangulation nets by matrix analysis in adjusting coordinates. Results of this work show that matrix analysis has many advantages, namely in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In addition to this, comparison of adjusted vlues by two different methods, a Rigorous Method and an Approximate Method, show that differences in adjusted coordinates are 1-2 mm within the mean square error. This proves that the Approximate Method has sufficient accuracy in the practical application.

  • Marine ecosystems are often characterized by a high biological diversity, and it corresponds to a high chemical diversity. Up to present, more than 20,000 new bioactive substances have been isolated from marine organisms, where considerable numbers of these naturally occurring derivatives are developed as potential candidates for pharmaceutical application. In this process, screening of natural products from marine organisms that could potentially inhibit the expression of metalloproteinases has gained a huge popularity. Cancer is considered as one of the deadliest diseases in the medical field. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) can degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) components and play important roles in a variety of biological and pathological processes. Matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors (MMPIs) have been identified as potential therapeutic candidates for metastasis, arthritis, chronic inflammation and wrinkle formation.

  • The characteristics of the controlled drug release were studied for biodegradable transdermal drug delivery system. A biodegradable polymeric matrix was prepared from chitosan, silver sulfadiazine, and glycerine. The release behavior of silver sulfadiazine from chitosan matrix was consistent with the Higuchi's diffusion controlled model. The release time was delayed by increasing the content of silver sulfadiazine and thickness of the matrix, whereas decreased as glycerine concentration increased. The apparent constant (K) of release rate was proportional to the content of drug or glycerine and the thickness of chitosan matrix. These results indicated that chitosan matrix shows some potential as a drug delivery system for transdermal therapeutic application.

  • One of the intriguing and fundamental algorithmic graph problems is the computation of the strongly connected components of a directed graph G. In this paper we first introduce a simple procedure for determining the location of the nonzero elements occurring in $B^{-1}$ without fully inverting B, where EB\;{\equiv}\;(b_{ij)\;and\;B^T$ are diagonally dominant matrices with $b_{ii}\;>\;0$ for all i and $b_{ij}\;{\leq}\;0$, for $i\;{\neq}\;j$, and then, as an application, show that all of the strongly connected components of a directed graph G can be recognized by the location of the nonzero elements occurring in the matrix $C(G)\;=\;(D\;-\;A(G))^{-1}$. Here A(G) is an adjacency matrix of G and D is an arbitrary scalar matrix such that (D - A(G)) becomes a diagonally dominant matrix.

  • This paper proposes a new Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm that is accelerated by adjusting a Jacobian matrix and a quasi-Hessian matrix. The proposed method partitions the Jacobian matrix into block matrices and employs the inverse of a partitioned matrix to find the inverse of the quasi-Hessian matrix. Our method can avoid expensive operations and save memory in calculating the inverse of the quasi-Hessian matrix. It can shorten the training time for fast convergence. In our results tested in a large application, we were able to save about 20% of the training time than other algorithms.

  • It is often necessary that the joints characteristics should be determined in the early stage of the vehicle body design. The researches on identification of joints in a vehicle body have been performed until the recent year. In this study, the joint characteristics of vehicle structure were expressed as the condensed matrix forms from the full joint stiffness matrix. The condensed joint stiffness matrix was applied to typical T-type and Edge-type joints, and the usefulness was confirmed. In addition, it was applied to the real center pillar model and the full vehicle body in order to validate the practical application.
