The open approach to teaching school mathematics in the United States is an outcome of the collaboration of Japanese and U. S. researchers. We examine the approach by illustrating its three aspects: 1) Open process (there is more than one way to arrive at the solution to a problem; 2) Open-ended problems (a problem can have several of many correct answers), and 3) What the Japanese call 'from problem to problem' or problem formulation (students draw on their own thinking to formulate new problems). Using our understanding of the Japanese open approach to teaching mathematics, we adapt selected methods to teach mathematics more effectively in the United States. Much of this approach is new to U. S. mathematics teachers, in that it has teachers working together in groups on lesson plans, and through a series of discussions and revisions, results in a greatly improved, effective plan. It also has teachers actively observing individual students or groups of students as they work on a problem, and then later comparing and discussing the students' work.
Purpose: This study was conducted to review the curriculum and license examination of physical therapists in the United States. Methods: The doctor of physical therapy (DPT) curriculum was evaluated by a review Course Work Tool version 6 (CWT6) data and current physical therapy licensure examination (National Physical Therapy Exam, NPTE) category in the United States. Results: The results indicated that they were required to meet the doctor of physical therapist degree based on 'Guide to Physical Therapist Practice' of American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). This includes general education in the areas of communications and humanities, physical science, biological science, social and behavioral science, and mathematics. A minimum of one course must be completed successfully in each area of general education. Moreover, there should be at least 68 didactic credits of professional education and 22 clinical education credits, which is a minimum of two full-time clinical internships with no less than 1050 hours in total, which were supervised by a physical therapist. Regarding the physical therapy licensure examination, National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE, 2016) consisted of a physical therapy examination (26.5%), evaluation, differential diagnosis, baseline of prognosis (32.5%), intervention (28.5%), protection, responsibility, and research (6.5%) based on the 'Guide to Physical Therapist Practice'. Conclusion: Based on the study results provided above, it is considered a standard to meet domestic reality as the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice of APTA for South Korean physical therapists.
The purpose of this study is to explore which performance verbs are used in the achievement standards of the Korean mathematics curriculum and how to improve them. So, first, we analyzed whether there were differences in the performance verbs included in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum achievement standards by school level. In addition, it was analyzed whether there were differences in the performance verbs included in the mathematics curriculum in Korea and foreign countries. As a result of the analysis, both the frequency and the type of performance verbs included in the achievement standards of the Korean mathematics curriculum decreased as the school level increased. Also, performative verbs such as 'understand' and 'know' were excessively used. Similar tendencies were seen in foreign mathematics curricula, but the frequency and the type of performance verbs were higher than those in Korea, and various performance verbs were used. As a result of the study, it is suggested that performance verbs included in achievement standards need to be improved to improve middle and high school mathematics classes.
To educate students to adjust and lead their future society oriented on technologies and information communications, most of the countries in the world try to reform their traditional mathematics education. Contemporary Mathematics in Context (CMIC) developed by Core-Plus Mathematics Project in WMU has been developed in order to assist school districts in reforming their high schools mathematics programs in the United States, and $7^{th}$ Korean National Mathematics Curriculum was developed to guide reforming Korean mathematics program in 1997. In this presentation, by analyzing essential differences between the two curricula according to Korean Mathematics Curriculum, we may find some implications of CMIC for Korean mathematics education.
To learn number system is a basic thing in school mathematics. In this paper, we analyze how number system is introduced in the 7th national curriculum and text books according to it. We found that the method of introducing number system is quite different from the former curriculum and former text books. There are many negative effects on the transition when compared with those of United States of America. There are many gaps between elementary school mathematics and middle school mathematics about levels and skills to deal with numbers. It is desirable to distinguish the negative sign from subtraction and to keep the concepts of commutativity and associativity of operations from the beginning. We also suggest to change the introducing timing and extension methods of number system in 7th grade mathematics.
The study aimed to compare and analyze Nuri curriculum and contents for mathematics in Korea and the Common Core State Standards(CCSS) and New Jersey Preschool Standards for mathematics in the United States. With the results as basis, this study intended to provide suggestions and directions for improving Nuri curriculum of mathematics for young children. For the goal of this study, educational goals, categories of contents, and specific contents were reviewed. First, results of this study indicated that Nuri curriculum for mathematics provides comprehensive educational goals that promote problem-solving ability in everyday contexts with composing mathematical knowledge. On the contrary, CCSS and Preschool Standards provide specific educational goals that focus on children's mathematical skills and concepts. Second, the contents of both countries' curriculum concentrate on 'counting and cardinality', 'measurement', and 'spatial and geometric sense.' There are 5 categories of CCSS, 4 categories of Preschool Standards based on CCSS and one category of Nuri curriculum for mathematics. Third, there are the differences between the two countries' curriculum in continuity from kindergarten to first grade and description method for curriculum.
Teacher preparation programs are responsible for preparing teachers to be able to perform their work with professional knowledge and skills. What opportunities to learn such knowledge and skills the programs intentionally develop for prospective teachers can be discerned by looking at the curriculum of teacher education. The purpose of this study is to find implications for the curriculum in elementary teacher education in South Korea, especially as that pertains to opportunities to learn teaching mathematics. This paper compares the curricula of 21 teacher preparation programs for elementary teachers in South Korea and in the United States. It finds that the programs in both countries emphasize teacher preparation to teach subject matter and to help elementary students improve their academic knowledge. The overall structures of the curriculums outlined in the programs of both countries are relatively comparable. In terms of the opportunities to learn teaching mathematics, however, they are quite different in what authentic contents they offer. This paper discusses the need for more emphasis on mathematical knowledge for teaching.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the United States Elementary Mathematics textbooks "Everyday Mathematics", focused on area of the probability. The concept of probability as qualitative probability is taught from Kindergarten in EM curricula for progressive mathematising. EM have reflected both perspectives in probability which are a frequency perspective and a classical perspective. And EM includes abundant activities for remedying the misconceptions of probability. On the basis of the results from this analysis, we have five suggestions which are helpful for the revision of the Korean national curriculum.
In the past half century little effort has been made for the improvement of teaching and learning statistics compared with other parts of school mathematics. But recently data analysis has begun to play a prominant role in the national reform efforts of mathematics curricula in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. In this paper we overview modern statistical thinking differed from mathematical thinking and examine the problems of current old-style teaching of statistics. And, we discuss the current data handling(or data analysis) emphasis in the national curriculum of mathematics in the countries mentioned above. We explore the reform direction of statistics teaching; changing the philosophy of teaching statistics, teaching real data analysis, emphasis of using computer, and teaching statistical inference not as mathematics but as intuitive data-centered approach.

In this paper, we compared and analyzed the Korean National Mathematics textbooks of the 2007 amendment curriculum and the Harcourt Math in America focused on fractions and decimals. To summarize the results of the analysis are as follows. First, both textbooks introduce fractions to the meaning of parts-whole concept, but the Harcourt Math is stronger than that of Korean Mathematics textbooks in the concept of unit fractions as a generator of fractions. Second, the fractions can be considered trivial materials - a fraction representing 1 whole, a fraction with it's denominator is 1 - were more clearly represented in our US textbooks than those of our Korean textbooks. Third, in the introduction of the term relating to the fractions, Korea is a strong point of view of the classification of fractions than the point of view of representation in comparison with the case of the United States. Fourth, the equivalent fraction and equivalent decimal concepts were described more detail in the United States of textbooks than those of the case of Korean textbooks. Finally, the approaches of fraction and decimal concepts were introduced more mathematically in the case of the United States than those of the case of Korean textbooks.
