  • Since textbooks for elementary school mathematics in accordance with the seventh curriculum are 'Class I' textbooks, which are used as one and only one textbooks throughout the country, the following aspects have been considered: In the legal aspect, the contents including the curriculum for mathematics asked of the Writing Committee by the Ministry of Education were reflected; in the aspect of theory of mathematics education, the textbooks are written in a way appropriate to theory of mathematics education; and in the aspect of application of reality, the textbooks are written to help improving mathematics education in classrooms. Therefore, the main frame of writing the textbooks is to make students feel proud enough to say "I have done mathematics", through helping students rationally solve problems surrounding them by themselves with their experiences and activities. In the above viewpoint the following sentence is reflected upon: "Hundred explanations are not equal to one manipulation activity."

  • We view Weyl structures as generalizations of Riemannian metrics and study the critical points of geometric functional which involve scalar curvature, defined on the space of Weyl structures on a closed 4-manifold. The main goal here is to provide a framework to analyze critical Weyl structures by defining functionals, discussing function spaces and writing down basic formulas for the equations of critical points.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the assessment rubric of mathematical communication ability by each type: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and graphic. This rubric is qualified in the content-validity and reliability by professional educators' evaluation and correlation coefficient. 16 math educators judged that this involves the results of learning mathematical communication, the results of possible instruction, and the content of scoring mathematical communication by teachers. 170 middle school students were tested by the assessment task according to the types of mathematical communication. After two researchers and two teachers scored the tasks, correlation coefficient was calculated between evaluators. The coefficient is evaluated high in that it is more than 0.70.

  • The purpose of the study were to analyze MathThematics textbooks and Korean middle school mathematics and to investigate the difference among the textbooks in the view of mathematical communication. According to the results, the textbook developers made a variety of efforts to develope students' mathematical communication ability. Students were encouraged to communicate with others about their mathematical ideas or problem solving processes in words or writing by means of discussion, oral report, presentation, journal, etc. MathThematics textbooks provided student self-assessment opportunity to improve student performance in problem solving, reasoning, and communication. In communication assessment, students can assess their use of mathematical vocabulary, notation, and symbols, the use of graphs, tables, models, diagrams and equation to solve problem and their presentation skills. The assessment activities would make a positive impact on the development of students' mathematical communication ability. MathThematics textbooks provided a variety of problem situation including history, science, sports, culture, art, and real world as a topic for communication, however, the researcher found that some of Korean textbooks depends heavily on mathematical problem situations.

  • Researchers continue to emphasize the centrality of proof in the context of school mathematics and the importance of proof to student learning of mathematics is well articulated in nationwide curricula. However, researchers reported that students' performance in proving tasks is not promising and students are not likely to see the need to prove a proposition even if they learned mathematical proof previously. Research attributes this issue to students' tendencies to accept an empirical argument as proof for a mathematical proposition, thus not being able to recognize the limitation of an empirical argument as proof for a mathematical proposition. In Korea, there is little research that investigated high school students' views about the need for proof in mathematics and their understanding of the limitation of an empirical argument as proof for a mathematical generalization. Sixty-two 11th graders were invited to participate in an online survey and the responses were recorded in writing and on either a four- or five-point Likert scale. The students were asked to express their agreement with the need of proof in school mathematics and to evaluate a set of mathematical arguments as to whether the given arguments were proofs. Results indicate that a slight majority of students were able to identify a proof amongst the given arguments with the vast majority of students acknowledging the need for proof in mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the We Start center visiting intervention program on the positive changes in the developmental areas and literacy interests of young children from low-income families. The subjects were 195 young children (109 in the experimental group, M=71.7 months; 86 in the control group, M=73.3 months) living in We Start areas (Ansan, Gwangmyeong, and Suwon cities) of Gyeonggi-do. The We Start center visiting intervention programs were conducted for 30-34 weeks in each city, and pre-tests and post-tests were conducted before and after the intervention programs. The instruments used were the developmental checklist and the literacy interests test The developmental checklist consisted of 7 domains (personality & sociality; language, reading, & writing; scientific thinking; mathematical thinking; arts; social learning; and physical development). The literacy interests test consisted of 2 factors (interest in literacy and interaction during activity). The scores on the developmental checklist showed positive changes in several domains (personality & social development; language, reading, & writing ability; scientific thinking; and social learning), but not in mathematical thinking, arts, and physical development. Second, the results of the literacy interests test showed positive effects on interaction during activity and the total score. In conclusion, the We Start center visiting program for young children from low-income families is an effective early intervention program to end the intergenerational transference of poverty in Korea.

  • This paper is designed to characterize the concept of flexibility of mind and analyze relationship between flexibility of mind and divergent thinking in view of mathematical problem solving. This study shows that flexibility of mind is characterized by two constructs, ability to overcome fixed mind in stage of problem understanding and ability to shift a viewpoint in stage of problem solving process, Through the analysis of writing test, we come to the conclusion that students who overcome fixed mind surpass others in divergent thinking and so do students who are able to shift a viewpoint.
