수학기계를 활용한 수학사 수업 (Instructions of History of Mathematics with Mathematical Machines)

  • Although many people have recognized the importance of history of mathematics in mathematics education, there are few studies that history and mathematics educations are connected. In this paper, we present and discuss the ways of introducing the instruction with mathematics machines. This instruction use the history of mathematics as part of a class not as a tool to stimulate students' interest but as a goal that it can be targeted mathematical itself. To do this, we first analyze the characteristics of applying history of mathematics in mathematical education, second, describe the meaning and the educational value of mathematical machines, and finally explained the way of applying history of mathematics with mathematics machines. The Instruction of history of mathematics with mathematics machines has advantages that practice (manipulation and experiment) and theory (elaboration of definition, production of conjectures and constructions of proofs) are interlaced within a historic-cultural perspective.

  • 본 연구는 초등학교 수학에 적용 가능한 수학사를 추출하고 이를 효과적으로 활용할 수 있는 수업 모형을 개발하여, 수학사를 활용하는 수업 이 학생들의 수학적 의사소통과 수학적 태도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보았다. 이를 위해 실험집단에는 수학사를 활용한 수업을, 비교집단에는 교과서를 활용한 교사 중심적인 수업을 실시하였으며, 연구 중에 수집된 자료는 양적 분석과 질적 분석 방법을 병행하여 분석하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 의사소통 중심의 수학사 기반 수학 수업은 학생들의 의사소통 참여도를 향상시키는 데에 도움을 주었으며, 둘째, 학생들이 수학적 논리를 가지고 자신의 의견을 상대방에게 정당화하게 하였다. 그러나, 수학사를 활용한 수학 수업이 학생들의 수학적 태도에 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 가져왔다고 볼수는 없으나, 긍정 적 변화의 조짐을 질적으로 관찰할 수 있었다.

한국의 국제수학올림피아드 참가의 성과 및 개선점 논의 (Review of participations of the Korean National Team in the International Mathematical Olympiad and discussions for improvements)

  • In the present study, we review the history of the participations of the Korean national team in the International Mathematical Olympiad for 28 years. We identifiy three major events that highlighted the development of the Korean Mathematical Olympiad program: The first participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad, hosting of the International Mathematical Olympiad, and winning the first place in the International Mathematical Olympiad. We also propose some recommendations for next steps to facilitate the development of Mathematical Olympiad in Korea.

  • 우리는 본 논문에서 초등학교 수학 교과서가 다루는 주요 수학사를 알아보았다. 우리나라 초등수학 교과서는 기축시대가 반영된 수학사를 다루고 있으며, 또한, 고대 이집트, 고 바빌로니아, 그리고 이슬람 수학을 배제하고 고대 그리스에서 로마, 유럽으로 수학문화의 전이를 왜곡하여 다루고 있다. 이를 초등수학 교과서를 통하여 알아보고 그 보완방안을 제시하였다.

  • The ways of mathematical meditative concentration of one's attentive calculation are the important records of the mathematics in the Korean mathematical history. Through them, we can find the methods of the mathematical thinking several generations ago, and presume the styles of life in the Chosun dynasty as men see the ancient life by the fossils. Thus we need to see them out of our unconcerns and rearrange them from the disorder without distortions.

수학사 기반 학습자 중심 수학동아리 효과 분석 연구 (A Study on Effect of Learner Centered Mathematical Club Based on Mathematics History)

  • This study assumes alternative character of the operation of mathematical club in middle school. The case that operated the voluntary mathematics club for one year was analyzed and the educational effect was considered. First, the examination instrument for choosing the members of mathematics club was developed and used. And, diverse teaching and learning materials for improving creativity and mathematical ability of the members were used. Second, the difference of learning result between the experiment group and control one who joined the activities of mathematics club was analyzed. Finally, mathematical club activity based on mathematics history appeared to be effective in improving academic achievement and mathematics exploration activity.

  • There has been an ongoing symbiotic relationship between the history of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction(ICMI) and the broader history of mathematics education since 1908. Similarly, the International Congress on Mathematical Education(ICME) has played an important role in the direction of Mathematics education since its first congress in 1969. ICME-12 is due to be held in Seoul, Korea from July $8^{th}$ to $15^{th}$ 2012. To date, there has been no research paper concerning the history of the ICMI published in any Korean journal. In readiness for the upcoming ICME-12, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the history of the IMCI from the perspective of Mathematics education.

중국 수학 교과서의 수학사 활용 분석 (Analysis on Using the History of Mathematics in Chinese Mathematics Textbooks)

  • This study aims to analyze how the history of mathematics is used in Chinese mathematics textbooks. As a framework for analysis, we categorized nine types of using the history of mathematics in textbooks. We analyzed 18 mathematics textbooks for Chinese elementary and middle schools. As a result, we found that various types of using the history of mathematics were adopted in Chinese textbooks except for explorations of mathematical errors in history. We also noticed three characteristics: preference to using for motivation and reading matters in elementary school levels, high frequencies of using problems from traditional mathematical books and origins of mathematical concepts or symbols, and emphasis on ethnic superiority through the Chinese traditional mathematics. Based on the results of analysis, we discussed and induced some implications for using the history in our mathematics textbooks.
