  • The subjects of this study on the effects of mother's personality on her childrearing behaviors were 1060 mothers and their $5^{th}$ grade children. Results indicated that maternal childrearing behaviors were related to her personality traits. The effects of mother's personality on her childrearing behaviors varied by sex of child, reporter (mother/child), and childrearing behavior factors. Mother-reported childrearing behaviors correlated more highly with her personality than child-reported behaviors. Behaviors reported by girls provided higher correlations between mother's personality and childrearing dimensions than reports by boys. Mother's personality traits showed differential correlations with childrearing dimensions of Rejection-Restriction (R R) and Warmth-Acceptance (W A) by reporter and sex of child. R R was affected by mother's Impulsiveness more among girls than among boys. Maternal Superiority increased W A toward boys while maternal Responsibility increased W A toward girls.

Methods : For this study we carried out the MMPI profiling and Percepted Maternal Love Scale on self-check test term, among 46 senior students who are attending Oriental Medical University. After collecting the data, we studied the correlation between the two measures. Results : 1. As the Percepted Maternal Love score increased, the Depression and Social Introversion score decreased conversely. 2. As the Percepted Maternal Love score increased, the Avoidant personality disorder score decreased. 3. As the Percepted Maternal Love score increased, Narcissistic personality disorder score increased as well. 4. As the scale of percepted mother's increased, the depressed, socially introverted character, and avoidant personality of the children decreased, and the self-loving personality character increased on the contrary. Conclusions : By the above results, we can come to the conclusion that in order to nurture the children to be self-loving and not to be depressed or intimidated, the mother must try to make sure that her children actually do perceive how much they are loved.

  • This study examined the relations between maternal personality, preschoolers' temperament, and overprotective and controlling parenting. A total of 285 mothers whose children aged from 4 to 6 years participated in this study. Mothers completed a set of questionnaires on their personalities, their children's temperament, and their overprotective and controlling parenting. Data were analyzed by regression analyses and t-test. First, maternal extraversion was negatively related to overprotective and controlling parenting, and maternal neuroticism was positively related to these parenting variables. Second, preschoolers' adaptability was negatively linked to overprotective and controlling parenting, and preschoolers' activity was positively linked to these parenting variables. Lastly, preschoolers' adaptability moderated the impact of maternal extraversion on controlling parenting. Maternal extraversion was a negative predictor of controlling parenting when preschoolers' adaptability was low. This relation was non-significant when preschoolers' adaptability was high. These results clearly indicate that both maternal personality and preschoolers' temperament play crucial roles in overprotective and controlling parenting.

In terms of the relationships of the mother's playfulness and parenting behavior, higher levels of playfulness resulted in higher levels of W A. and lower levels of permissiveness nonintervention(P N) and rejection restriction(R R). Second, N, E, C, and a maternal sense of humor had an effect in W A. C was found to have an effect in P N and N was observed to have an effect in R R.

  • This study analyzed the effect of family meals on the psychological problems of children. We performed focus group interviews (FGI) on the basic characteristics of family meals, and chose several scales (such as Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), self-esteem, and a daily hassles questionnaire), to measure the psychological variables. We collected data from 442 dyads (mother-child) and used 440 from dyads. In our results, the frequency of family meals affected the psychological problems of children, especially aggression and emotional instability. The atmosphere during meals also affected depression/anxiety, concentration difficulties, emotional instability, self-esteem, peer relationships, and sociality. There were significant correlations between meal atmosphere, family bonding, maternal personality, and psychological problems of children. We performed covariation analysis to examine and control the influence of family bonding and maternal personality; despite controlling for these variables, family meals still influenced children's psychological problems. We conclude that the family meal is a significant variable that impacts the emotional and behavioral problems of children and stress the importance of frequent family meals.
