  • When a vessel passes near a channel boundary, the boundary creates forces and moments acting on the vessel. With the same reason passing of two vessels closely gives same effects to each other. The principal difference between the above two cases is that the channel boundary is long and constant shape compared to those of vessels. The interaction forces and moments between two vessels could be assumed to be functions of the longitudinal distance $chi_0$, transverse distance $y_0$ and speeds of the two vessels. Passage of one vessel close to another is important operationally from the viewpoint of replenishment at sea, avoidance of collisions and passage of two vessels in restricted channels. The authors studied the interactions between two vessels running closely and calculated safe conducting distances according to separated distances and speeds of the two vessels.

  • A two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (2D PIV) system in a towing tank is employed to measure a wake field of a very large crude oil carrier model with rotating propeller in self propulsion condition, to identify characteristics of wake of a propeller working behind a ship. Phase-averaged and time-averaged flow fields are measured for a horizontal plane. Scale ratio of the model ship is 1/100 and Froude number is 0.142. By phase-averaging technique, trajectories of tip vortex and hub vortex are identified and characteristic secondary vortex distribution is observed in the hub vortex region. Propeller wake on the starboard side is more accelerated than that on the port side, due to the difference of inflow of propeller blades. The hub vortex trajectory tends to face the port side. With the fluctuation part of the phase-averaged velocity field, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is also derived. In the center of tip vortex and hub vortex region, high TKE concentration is observed. In addition, a time-averaged vector field is also measured and compared with phase-averaged vector field.

  • The tasks of Vessel Traffic Services are classified according to the content of the information provided. Since the establishment of the first Vessel Traffic Service center in 1993 at Phohang harbour, it has been steadily developed and its work domain and scope have been expanded. In this paper, the importance and workload of Vessel Traffic Service operators were analyzed according to classification of the tasks. In order to measure the importance and workload, questionnaires were conducted for the operators nationwide, and conclusions were drawn using the multi-criteria decision making process. The relationship between the importance of tasks and the workload might be used as the weights for setting the service areas in the future. Furthermore, it is expected to be used as the data of changable sector operation based on the relationship between importance and workload.

  • In the modern management literature, knowledge has been recognized as a new strategic resource enabling a firm to create its competitiveness. Shipping companies under fierce competitive structure need to pay attentions to the utility of knowledge management. A shipping firm may develop its unique service capability by classifying, sharing, and transferring the data, information and knowledge obtained from both inside and outside its global service network. The current study attempts to analyze influential relationships between liner shipping firms' knowledge management and service capabilities. In order to achieve this goal, this study designed a knowledge chain model measuring shipping companies' knowledge management levels and tested its validity and reliability based on a total of 80 replied questionnaires from national and foreign liners. The empirical result presents that supportive and primary activities composing a knowledge chain could exert significant positive influences on the enforcement of shipping service capabilities. This research shows that the utility of knowledge management is adoptable in the maritime industry, and recommends that shipping firms should recognize strategic importance of knowledge and actively pursue knowledge management at an entire firm level.

  • The precise prediction of ships propulsion performance is very important to find out the ships optimum route. This paper describes the development of computer program to generate the database of propulsion performance for the ships optimum routing system. The propulsion performance of ship in the sea is caused by not only ships conditions such as drift and hull roughness, but also various sea conditions such as wave and wind. These prediction methods of added resistance are based on the ships speed trial analysis methods of the ISO 15016:2002 standard, and a few prediction methods of the wind and hull roughness are supplemented. These prediction methods have been applied to the comprehensive computer program. And the database calculation for the research ice breaker the Araon has been carried out, which shall be used for the calculation of optimum route. Furthermore, this program shall be used for the route optimization in global shipping routes.

  • Because of the heat island phenomenon and sea wind, there can be thermal conditions' differences around buildings at downtown and coastal area respectively in coastal city, like Busan, Incheon, Mokpo. For the final purpose of the buildings' energy saving design and operation considering of above mentioned environments differences, energy consumption including heating and cooling loads, electric loads are necessary to be accumulated and analyzed in as the database. As a part of this concept, this study aims to survey and analyze each loads of 22 apartments which has at least 100 households respectively and is located at Yeongdo island, Busan, Korea It is cleared that despite the residents living in this district can use sea wind as a natural ventilation and/or cooling methods, they mainly depends on the electric-driven air-conditioners for cooling with window-closed because of anti-salt problems of the sea wind. This leads the maximum power consumption of the surveyed-22-apartments to be appeared in August like that of inland buildings.

  • The hydrodynamic interaction effects between the multi-bodies can not be neglected when vessels are close to each other in congested and confined waters, such as in a harbour or narrow channel. Increase in speed and size of modern vessels make it necessary to consider this interaction effects when designing harbours and navigation channels. In this research, the hydrodynamic interaction effects of the spacing between vessels and water depth along with ship's velocity are summarized and discussed. The goal of this research is to propose a guideline of appropriate speed and distance between passing and moored vessels to avoid the influence of hydrodynamic forces and to navigate safely in confined sea areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify human factors that directly or indirectly cause ship accidents and to suggest implications based on the derived human factors. In particular, we conducted a survey on the basis of the human factors derived from the literature survey and interviews, and applied the revised importance-performance analysis (IPA) to develop implications from a comparison of two groups: seafarers and shipping operations managers. Data were collected from 159 practitioners in the Korean shipping industry. The analysis structure consisted of five major factors with 20 components, including unique factors related to ship and shipping management companies, personal competence, in-vessel organization, and personnel's health, as well as social factors. The result of the IPA analysis indicates that in-vessel organization is the most urgent and major factor for improvement. Some differences exist in the components that should be improved between the two groups. For the seafarer group, an increase in unskilled onboard crew affected sustainable safety activities, thus implying an area of preferential improvement regarding the in-vessel organization factor. However, for the shipping operations managers group, the difference in recognizing safety standards among the crew members on board and the ability to communicate with other crew members should be improved first relative to in-vessel organization factors. The personnel's health factor was identified to be of low importance in both groups. Finally, the importance of improving the safety consciousness level according to the safety education and training implementation for seafarers on board was different for the two groups.

  • After the Great East Japan Earthquake, reports and books that compiled the testimonies of the victims were published and the situation of the evacuation at that time became known. However, there is very little information on the evacuation situation of children among these data, and it is not fully known what actions the children took and how they evacuated due to an earthquake or tsunami. The purpose of this study is to analyze and examine children's evacuation behavior in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and to predict children's evacuation behavior for future disasters.
