A Experimental Study on Improvement of Marine Clay through the Electrolytic Leaching Effect in Aluminum Electrode (알루미늄 전극의 용출에 따른 해성점토의 개량에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, aluminum electrodes were put in marine clay which was taken from the south coast in Korea to increase the undrained shear strength by inducing the densification and cementation between clay particles and precipitates which were developed by electric decomposition in an electrode. To raise the cementation rate and reduce treatment time, high electric current (2.5A) was applied in each electrode at a semi-pilot scale soil box with marine clay. After the tests, the undrained shear strength was measured at designated points using a static cone penetration test device and sampling was conducted simultaneously in order to measure water content, pH and electric conductivity which would be the key for configuring the cementation effects indirectly. In the results of electric decomposition in aluminum electrode, the measured shear strength was increased considerably compared to the initial shear strength because of the cementation effect between iron ions and soil particles.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out what is the functional role of VTS in order to get the people concerned with marine traffic/transportation understand about VTS. VTS could be described as the essential risk management system in both cost effective on cost-benefit analysis and the sea space or time management at port, coastal environment. The important role of the VTS are those functions such as the decision making infrastructure, the passive/active safety measures at sea. VTS could not control/regulate marine traffic as strong as ATC(Air Traffic Control) owing to the marine traffic characters. However, the right and responsibility of VTS finally are belong to the master, pilot and mariners. For the benefit of the electronic technology development, VTS system also cloud be upgraded to communication system from information system. In connection with these system upgrading, the right and responsibility of VTS/staff should be supported by domestic legal system. The followings are presented for VTS to be effective. First, the cooperation and understanding of VTS between the peoples concerned with marine traffic/transportation are essential. Because they are all data supplier and also information consumers. Second, VTS staff/regulator should be selected, educated, trained accordingly as per their career, ability, quality, qualification, certification and etc. Third, the port reliability from VTS users depends on the factors such as economic interests, safety and effectiveness/efficiency of VTS.

  • This paper introduces a new method of improvement for marine soft ground, MLPP (Marine large Pack Pile). The MLPP is a reinforcement technique far the conventional SCP or GCP piles by confining them with geotextile pack. A pilot project at Busan New Port site and laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate the settlement reduction and bearing capacity enhancement effect of pack pile. The results of field and laboratory tests show that MLPP method can be a safe and economic alternative method for SCP and GCP.

  • Reduced crew performance is frequently cited as a major causal factor in maritime accident causation. Although considerable research has been conducted on the hours of work undertaken by seafarers through interviews and the analysis of records, experimental studies to observe the effects of factors such as high workload, shift patterns, stress, sleep deprivation and disturbance on the cognitive performance of mariners have been limited. Other safety-critical transport industries, such as aviation and rail, have developed fatigue management tools to help manage the work patterns of their operators. Such a tool for mariners would assist shipboard crew, marine pilots and shore management in planning and improving work schedules. The overall aim of this paper is to determine a fatigue factor, which can be applied to human performance data, as part of a software program that calculates total cognitive performance. This program enables us to establish the levels of cognitive performance of a group of marine pilots to test a decision-making task based on radar information. This paper addresses one of the factors that may contribute to the determination of various fatigue factors: the effect of different work patterns on the cognitive performance of a marine pilot.

  • This paper describes design techniques on the ship simulator system adopting virtual reality technology. Ship handling, generally, is done by the multi workers such as Captain, Officer, Pilot and Quartermaster. With this special fact, we proposed multi client-server network and hardware architecture which fit to the Virtual Reality Ship Simulator.

  • Typically, closed production system units are subject to an accumulation of fine suspended solids and dissolved organics (Weeks et at., 1992). Foam fractionation process is believed to be most effective in marine application for solids removal. In present experiment, the performance of foam fractionator for removal of solids, protein, and other dissolved materials was evaluated at different foam overflow heights and air flow rates in a pilot-scale recirculating aquaculture system for culture of Korean rockfish. Development of Learning Strategy Scale for College Students (전문대학생을 위한 학습전략 진단 도구의 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop of learning strategy scale for college students. This study further classified several sub-areas and defined each concepts of learning strategy. Based upon the classification of each sub-areas, tentative test items were developed through the verification of validity by three professionals. A pilot study of the developed scale was administered to 239 college students. And the research collected major data from 1,012 college students. Data were analyzed to obtain item quality, reliability, and validity analysis. The results of this study were as follows. The scale for learning strategy was defined by eight factors and they were 'self-management strategy', 'examination-readiness strategy', 'cognitive strategy', 'memorizing strategy', 'reporting strategy', 'resource-utilization strategy', 'self-regulated strategy', 'cooperative learning strategy'. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis proved the eight factors in the learning strategy. And criterion validity evidence was also obtained from a correlation analysis of the level of academic achievement.

Design of Next-Generation Ship Simulator System Using Virtual Reality (가상현실을 이용한 차세대 선박 시뮬레이터의 시스템 설계)

  • The paper describes system design of next-generation Ship Simulator using Virtual Reality (VRSS), well known as human-computer interaction. VRSS system is required to have special condition that comprises multiple user participants such as captain, officer, pilot, and quartermaster. To cope with that condition, core technologies were explored and proposed multi-networking system with broker server. The evaluation of the proposed system was done with PC-based immersion-type VR device, constituted with HMD (Head Mounted Display), Head Tracking Sensor, Puck, Headphone, and Microphone. Using the VR device, assessment test was carried out in a virtual bridge with 3D objects, which are created by VRML (Virtual Reality Model Language) program. As results of tests, it is shown that the cybernetic 3D objects were act as if real things in a real ship's bridge. Therefore, interesting interaction with participants can be obtained in the system, Thus, we found that the proposed system architecture can be applicable to VRSS system construction.
