  • To meet the interoperability requirements associated with geospatial data access and geoprocessing, much efforts to design prototypical systems conforming to $OpenGIS^{TM}$ specification has been made. With respect to Object Web GIS, however, current internet mapping technology mainly focuses on either developing mapping libraries or client applications regardless of the future needs for interoperability such as an integration of $OpenGIS^{TM}$ standard for CORBA. In this paper, we propose an $OpenGIS^{TM}$ compliant mapping kernel. OpenViews, which is designed to meet those requirements. The kernel of OpenViews encapsulates the process of acquiring geospatial data in the format of $OpenGIS^{TM}$ Geometry through ORB(Object Request Broker). OpenViews, being designed based on well-known design patterns, is a highly extensible in that programmers can easily customize it on the object oriented architecture. The components implemented in OpenViews are CORBA/Java objects, and as such are portable and scalable in a networked environment. A companion package, OpenBroker, is also developed as a portable geoprocessing application server to facilitate the implementation and configuration of server side CORBA objects. It can be used for implementing objects for spatial analysis service which would be independent of legacy spatial database systems in many cases. OpenViews, together with OpenBroker, has been successfully prototyped using the technologies including EJB and servlet as the core components of an Open GIS compliant internet mapping.

  • In this study, we investigated high school students' analogy generating processes using the think-aloud method. Twelve high school students in Seoul participated in this study. The students were asked to generate analogies on ionic bonding and were also interviewed after their activities. Their activities and interviews were recorded and videotaped. After classifying the analogy generating processes into the three stages-encoding, exploring sources, and mapping, several process components were identified. The analyses of the results indicated that they checked the target concept given and selected one for a salient attribute among many attributes of the target concept at the stage of encoding. After selecting the salient attribute, they translated the salient attribute that is a scientific term into an everyday term, which is named as 'extracting salient similarities.' At the stage of exploring sources, they chose the sources based on salient similarities and chose the final source through circular processes, which included the process components of 'evaluating the sources' and 'discarding the sources.' At the final stage, they added the attributes to analogs and mapping them to the attributes of the target concept, which is named as 'mapping shared attributes.' There were some cases that 'mapping shared attributes' appeared after they specified the situation of analogs or assumed new situation, which is named as 'specifying the situations.' Some students recognized unshared attributes in their analogs.

  • The purposes of this paper are to review the concept and system structure of computer graphics and to discuss the applicability of computer graphics technique as an analysis tool in transportation studies. To do this, several applications of computer graphics used for analyzing and solving transportation system problems were described and illustrated. The results indicate that computer graphics are found to be powerful aids to the analysis and design of transportation systems that typically involve large data bases and several interacting components. The results also indicate that computer graphics can be a powerful tool for aiding planner, decision maker and citizen in making it easier to explain and interpret information through mapping and graphic display.

  • This paper elaborates on difficulties when ones tried to apply domestically developed technology to other countries from both technical and sociological aspects. Next, the author proposes possible solutions to expand the applicability of domestic technology. The main one is breaking down a technology to smaller components so that anybody can clarify the applicability of each component. The author presents an example of this methodology to flood hazard mapping.

  • Eukaryotic cilia are organelles that project from the surface of cells to fulfill motility and sensory functions. In vertebrates, the functions of both motile and immotile cilia are critical for embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis. Importantly, a multitude of human diseases is caused by abnormal cilia biogenesis and functions which rely on the compartmentalization of the cilium and the maintenance of its protein composition. The transition zone (TZ) is a specialized ciliary domain present at the base of the cilium and is part of a gate that controls protein entry and exit from this organelle. The relevance of the TZ is highlighted by the fact that several of its components are coded by ciliopathy genes. Here we review recent developments in the study of TZ proteomes, the mapping of individual components to the TZ structure and the establishment of the TZ as a lipid gate.

  • In this research, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Hook-Jeeves numerical method has been developed: This method is more precise and stable than the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Newton-Rapson numerical method with Gaussian elimination method. Using the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Hook-Jeeves numerical method, we can separate stress components from isochromatics only and stress intensity factors and stress concentration factors can be determined. The photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Hook-Jeeves had better be used in the full field experiment than the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Newton-Rapson with Gaussian elimination method.

  • New trends such as electronic commerce, virtual organizations, e-business applications, etc. increase the dependence of production management on information software systems and contribute to the needs for global, distributed object systems. This paper presents a component based approach for production management systems under the multi-tier distributed information system architecture using UML(Unified Modeling Language), CORBA(Common Object Request Broker Architecture) and XML(eXtensible Markup Language) technologies, and propose rules for mapping a UML class diagram to a XML DTD (Document Type Definition). And we adapt it to the prototype system implementation. The components are implemented by CORBA and we use XML messages for the information exchange between components.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the design elements useful to give place identity to street space. The theory for place identity is studied and the components-Physical element, Sense, Program, Activity, Context-for identity of place is created. In the case study of SamcheongdongGil, the qualitative research method of Free Picturing Technique and Cognitive Mapping is executed and the samples gathered from the research are analyzed. In the process of analysis, the contents of qualitative evaluation by users is put in order as components for identity of place. Moreover, the design elements for street space are extracted from the case study and theories of urban design. The design elements are summarized as the followings: street pattern with high permeability, various streetscapes, greenscapes, semi public(private) spaces, the third places, public arts, transparent facades, and outdoor activities. Finally, the fruits and boundary of this study are described and the importance of place identity is.

  • Residual stresses are inherently introduced into the engineering components during manufacturing including rolling, forging, bending and welding processes. Excessive residual stresses are known to be detrimental to the proper integrity and performance of components. Neutron diffraction has become a well-established technique for the determination of residual stresses in welds. The deep penetration capability of neutrons into most metallic materials makes neutron diffraction a powerful tool for the residual stress measurements through the thickness of the weld specimen. Furthermore, the unique volume-averaged bulk characteristic of the scattering beam and mapping capability in three dimensions is suitable for the engineering purpose. In this presentation, the neutron diffraction measurements of the residual stresses will be introduced and measurement results will highlighted in thick weld plates.

  • As the application area of XML extends to the database from simple contents, the technology for the storage and management of XML also grows with the XML. One of the main issues is how to efficiently manage the XML by using the previous DBMS. Many studies have been performed for the efficient management based on the XML application and database interface. However, the XML data is based on the object and has the hierarchical structure. Accorkingly, a modeling plan needs to store the XML data on the variety type of database. In this paper, for easier connection between XML application and database system, we have designed components for the transformation from XML DTD to ORDB schema. The method of the design for the transformation from XML DTD to ORDB schema is chosen the method of CBD.
