This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of chewable toothbrush and manual toothbrush and provide basic data for recommendation of the chewable toothbrush in specific groups and situations. A total of 20 subjects participated in this study (rolling method, 10; non-rolling method, 10). After professional prophylaxis, participants used the manual toothbrush to brush their teeth for 3 minutes. After a 7-day wash-out period, participants used the chewable toothbrush according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pre- and post-plaque indexing of the teeth was performed. The dental plaque index was assessed using the Turesky Modification of the Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (TMQHPI) for amount of plaque and Silness-Loe Plaque Index (SLPI) for plaque thickness. The difference between pre- and post-dental plaque index was analyzed using a paired t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The Mann-Whitney U test was also used to compare the dental plaque index reduction rates. The dental plaque index differed significantly between the chewable toothbrush and the manual toothbrush. The TMQHPI reduction rate was significantly different between the rolling and non-rolling method groups for the manual toothbrush but not the chewable toothbrush. The difference in SLPI reduction rate between the rolling and non-rolling method groups was significant for the manual toothbrush but not for the chewable toothbrush. Differences in the dental plaque index reduction rates between the chewable and manual toothbrushes were not significant in the non-rolling method group. The results of this study showed higher reduction rates in dental plaque with manual toothbrush use than with chewable toothbrush use. However, the non-rolling method group did not show statistically significant differences according to toothbrush type. The present study showed that a chewable toothbrush can be an alternative to a manual toothbrush for individuals who have difficulty using the generally recommended rolling method.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of sonic and manual toothbrush in decreasing plaque accumulation in young orthodontic patients. Twenty one healthy orthodontic patients attending department of pediatric dentistry at Samsung Medical Center were chosen for the study. The subjects were randomly assigned to either sonic or manual toothbrush and instructed to brush for 2 minutes. Plaque score was assessed with the modified Visible Plaque Index (VPI) before and after brushing. Each brush was repeated twice. A mean plaque reduction of sonic toothbrush was 61.79%(${\pm}7.95$) compared to 69.19%(${\pm}10.08$) of manual toothbrush(p<0.05). With the sonic toothbrush, male presented a mean plaque reduction of 63.07%(${\pm}8.64$) while female presented 60.39%(${\pm}7.30$). For manual toothbrush, male presented 69.33%(${\pm}10.14$) and female presented 69.03%(${\pm}10.55$) reduction of plaque accumulation(p>0.05). There was no statistically significant correlation between age and plaque removal efficacy in this study(p>0.05). Manual toothbrush was significantly more efficient in removing plaque than the sonic toothbrush in young fixed orthodontic patients.
Periodontal disease is caused by accumulation of bacterial plaque. For the reason, plaque control is essential to control and prevent periodontal disease. Among the plaque control methods, mechanical plaque removal, tooth brushing is common and reliable. But it depends on individual habituation and their manner. To catch up the gap of effectiveness, lots of oral hygiene appliances have been developing. Powered toothbrush is the most interesting field and is showing on the market with various motion type. This study was performed to compare clinical effects of plaque removal between powered toothbrush and manual toothbrush. The results were as follows : 1. Plaque index was decreased statistically after the brushing than before the brushing in every group.(p<0.05) 2. Comparing plaque index among the three groups before and after brushing, there were no statistically significant differences. 3. Interproximal plaque index was decreased statistically after the brushing than before the brushing in every group.(p<0.05) 4. Comparing interproximal plaque index among the three groups before and after brushing, there were no statistically significant differences.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an electric toothbrush, with a specially designed orthodontic brush head, compared to a manual toothbrush on the periodontal health of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances Forty patients were randomly divided into two groups. the electric and the manual toothbrush groups, 1 month after attachment of fixed orthodontic appliances. Periodontal status was measured using a plaque index, a gingival index. a bleeding index, a pocket depth and a relative attachment loss, at baseline and after 3 months. 6 months, 9 mouths. and 12 mouths. The Braun Oral-B Plak Control with Ortho OD 15-1 brush head was used as the electric toothbrush while the Butler G.U.M 124 was given as the manual toothbrush. In the manual toothbrush group, the giugival and bleeding indices showed no statistically significant differences, but the plaque index was significantly decreased (P<0.001) and pocket depth as well as relative attachment loss were significantly increased (p<0.01). In the electric toothbrush group. the bleeding index, pocket depth and relative attachment loss showed no statistically significant differences. but the plaque and gingival indices were significantly decreased (p<0.001). In the case of the plaque. giugival and bleeding indices, there were no statistically significant differences between the electric and the manual toothbrush groups. On the contrary, in the case of pocket depth and relative attachment loss, there were statistically significant differences between the electric and the manual toothbrush groups: an increase in the manual toothbrush groups unlike the electric toothbrush group which kept the same state (P<0.05) These findings suggest that an electric toothbrush is useful for orthodontic patients with fixed appliances.

Patients with fixed orthodontic appliances frequently have increased levels of plaque accumulation leading to the possibility of gingivitis or enamel decalcification. Although many methods may be helpful in reducing dental plaque formation, the optimal mechanical removal of plaque is the most important factor during orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an electric toothbrush (with a specially designed orthodontic brush head) compared to a manual toothbrush in controlling plaque and gingivitis for patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Oral hygiene status was measured in thirty-four patients using a plaque index, a gingival index and a bleeding index, before and four weeks after the attachment of fixed orthodontic appliances. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: electric and manual toothbrush groups. Oral hygiene instruction was given according to the type of toothbrush used. The Braun Oral-B D9511 with Braun Oral-B Ortho OD 15-1 brush head was used as the electric toothbrush while the Butler G.U.M. 124 was given as the manual toothbrush. After four md eight weeks, oral hygiene status was measured again. Through a comparison between the electric and the manual toothbrush groups, the following results were obtained. 1. All oral hygiene indices showed an increasing tendency after four weeks of fixed orthodontic appliance. 2. All indices presented a decreasing tendency four and eight weeks after oral hygiene instruction. 3. In case of the gingival index and bleeding index, the decreasing tendency did not show a statistically significant difference between the electric and the manual toothbrush groups. 4. The decreasing tendency of plaque index presented a statistically significant difference between the two groups, showing that the electric toothbrush was more effective in terms of oral hygiene. These findings suggest that an electric toothbrush is useful to orthodontic patients with fixed appliances.

The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of sonic and manual toothbrushes using the $L{\ddot{o}}e$ and Silness plaque index (PI). This was an examiner-blind, randomized study with a cross-over design. A total of 34 children (17 males and 17 females) aged 3-6 years were included. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: one group used the sonic brush for two weeks before using the manual brush for two weeks, while the other group used the manual brush for two weeks followed by the sonic brush. During each dental visit, plaque indices were recorded and compared to baseline. The results were analyzed using a paired t-test or Pearson correlation test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Thirty children (mean age 4.37 years) complied with the protocol and completed the study. The PI score was 0.09 lower compared to baseline after using a manual toothbrush and 0.26 lower after using the sonic brush. The reduction was statistically significantly greater in the sonic group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the sonic toothbrush is more effective for reducing plaque than a manual toothbrush.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Sonicare $Elite^{(R)}$ power toothbrush in plaque removal and reduction of gingivitis from hard-to-reach sites of the moderate periodontitis compared to regular manual toothbrush in 12 week follow-up. 82 subjects with incipient to moderate periodontitis were randomly assigned to use either the manual or sonic brush, instructed in its use, and asked to brush 2 times a day for 2 minutes. Plaque scores were taken at baseline, 1, 4, 12 weeks using Silness & $L\ddot{o}e$ plaque index and gingival inflammation was assessed by the $L\ddot{o}e$ & Silness gingival index. The results were as follows. 1. The Sonicare $Elite^{(R)}$ power toothbrush showed a significant reduction(p<0.0001) of the plaque(Silness & $L\ddot{o}e$) and gingival inflammation(Loe & Silness). 2. The Sonicare $Elite^{(R)}$ power toothbrush showed a significant better reduction of plaque and gingivitis(p<0.05) than the manual toothbrush after 1, 4, and 12 weeks. 3. The Sonicare $Elite^{(R)}$ power toothbrush demonstrated a significant reduction(p<0.0001) of the plaque in interproximal sites(p<0.0001), buccal sites(p<0.0001) and the lingual sites(p=0.00l8) of the teeth. 4. The Sonicare $Elite^{(R)}$ power toothbrush demonstrated a significant reduction(p<0.0001) of the gingival inflammation in the interproximal sites(p<0.0001), the buccal sites(p<0.0001) and the lingual sites(p<0.0001) of the teeth. The results of this study support the findings that Sonicare $Elite^{(R)}$ power toothbrush has a great potential to remove the plaque and resolve the gingival inflammation during the period of 12 week.
Since early model of powered toothbrush (Broxadent) was introduced in the 1960s, the design of powered toothbrush has changed significantly. Today powered toothbrushes can be categorized as mechanical and sonic. The main patterns of movements in the modern powered toothbrushes are oscillation, reciprocation, and rotational. Powered brushes especially helpful for people who have disabilities or dexterity issue. These brushes are also highly recommended for patients who require a larger handle because these are easier to grasp. By systematic review of Cochrane group in 2014, powered toothbrushes reduced dental plaque and gingivitis more than manual toothbrushing in the short and long term. Now we can recommend powered toothbrushes to people who need to enhance self-control dental plaque removal efficacy.
The purpose of this research is to evaluate and compare the plaque removal ability of sonic brushing and manual brushing in order to present a method for continuous and effective oral hygiene control during orthodontic treatment. Nonextracted adolescent patients (male: 23 persons, female: 37 persons) and adult patients (male: 15 persons, female: 45 persons) outfitted with a fixed orthodontic appliance from their incisors to second molar, in both the maxilla and mandible, were divided into manual brushing and sonic brushing groups. A Philips oral healthcare HX-4401 sonic toothbrush was used, and the application of brushing for the two groups was standardized at two minutes. After brushing, the plaque score was measured with a modified Wilkin's PHP. The following results were achieved after comparing each group's plaque score. 1. In patients with a fixed orthodontic appliance when age was not accounted for, the application of sonic brushing exerted a beneficially decreased effect on the plaque score. (adolescents : p<0.01, adults: p<0.05) 2. When comparing the adolescent and adult groups in regard to plaque score, the adolescent group showed a more decreased effect. 3. When using the same toothbrush type, there was no difference between the adolescent and adult groups.
