Elementary School Teachers' Needs about the Teachers' Manual for Science Instruction (과학 교수-학습 지도 자료에 대한 초등교사들의 요구)

  • In this study, elementary school teachers' needs for the teachers' manual for science instruction were investigated. The participants were 143 elementary school teachers. The test for needs analysis consisted of thirty-seven 5-point Likert-scaled items: Seven items for the professional knowledge category, fourteen items for the laboratory category, ten items for the instruction category, and six items for the design category, respectively. Teachers' background variables such as sex, age, teaching career, major, and the frequency of using teachers' manuals for science instruction except for the teachers' manuals for science textbooks were also examined. The results indicated that elementary school teachers' needs were generally found to be high, which means they are not satisfied with the current teachers' manuals for science textbooks and/or other teachers' manuals for science instructions. In addition, teachers' needs for the laboratory category tended to be higher than those for the other categories. In several items, elementary school teachers' needs were also found to be different in terms of their characteristics.

  • This study is to review division of whole numbers which is dealt in the revised elementary mathematics textbook and manual for teacher. The textbook and manual for teachers are most important documents to teach mathematics. And they are important to the would-be teachers who study the elementary mathematics with such documents. Therefore the textbook and manual for teachers should have no errors. But I found they have some errors and problems regarding division of whole numbers. In this paper, I discuss the problems and suggest the alternative plans.

A Reconstructed Version of Teachers' Manual of Elementary Mathematics for Units 6, 7 and 8, Textbook 4 na (초등 수학 4-나 단계 6, 7, 8 단원 교사용 지도서의 재구성)

  • The 7th curriculum sets a basic direction based on learner centered teaching, with the aim of allowing students to develop their mathematical ability. Teachers' manuals are provided to help teachers fallow the basic direction and achieve the curriculum aims, but in practice they are not always helpful. Therefore, we reconstructed parts of a teachers' manual. This involved analyzing the contents of units 6, 7 and 8 of the elementary mathematics textbook 4 na to identify and outline the problems; introducing more detailed teaching methods and activities; and developing teaching learning materials. We tested the new version in several real classes and analysed the responses 6f teachers and students to examine the possibility of its practical use. The results suggest that the reconstructed version of the teachers' manual for units 6, 7 and 8 of textbook 4 na is of greater practical utility.

Needs Analysis of Experiential Learning Program for Eco-friendly School Farm Activation -Target of Teachers in Elementary School- (친환경 스쿨팜 활성화를 위한 체험학습용 프로그램 요구분석 -초등학교 교사를 대상으로-)

  • This research was conducted to analysis the Elementary School Teachers' needs necessary for developing the eco-friendly school farm program. To perform these research problems, 167 people from five Elementary School group (A, B, C, D and E). Of respondents of the survey, 160 questionnaires were significant. The frequency analysis was used with SPSS 17.0 statistics program. Teacher of the needs analysis results are as follows: Teachers want to help school farm program by gardening expert, experienced volunteer. Costs of instructor and material must be supported by the government, local government. Teachers are demanding an integrated program for horticulture. The teachers would have preferred an easy plant to grow and appear in textbooks. Therefore teachers' needs to be a convert-gence in the eco-friendly school farm program manual.

Contents Analysis on Unification Education in the Teachers' Manual of the Nuri Curriculum (누리과정 교사용 지도서에 나타난 통일교육 내용분석)

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the status of South Korean unification education for young children by reviewing Nuri curriculum developed by the Korean government. Method: Literature review was adopted in order to analyze the contents of the Nuri curriculum teachers'manuals under the areas and elements of unification education. Results: Unification education has been designed to accelerate unification, to promote the values and attitudes toward the unification of the two Koreas, and to prepare for the post-unification period. This education can be categorized into specific areas: democratic community, democratic citizenship, peacekeeping and multiculturalism. These areas account for 24.24% of the total contents in the Teachers'Manual of the Nuri curriculum. The percentage of the contents helpful to understand North Korea and unification, however, is merely 0.25% of the total contents, and the elements are not fairly balanced. Such content coverage of the teacher's manuals for kindergartens is 2.83% higher than that for preschools. Conclusion/Implications: The implications of this analysis include that the elements of unification education should take a more balanced approach with more integrated and broader coverage. The elements also need to be revised so that both kindergarteners and preschoolers can get access to unification education of the same quality.

Research on the manual development for activating teaching consulting in mathematics (수업컨설팅 활성화를 위한 매뉴얼 개발 - 수학 교과를 중심으로 -)

  • The main goal of the research is to develop instructional consulting manual to help math teachers improve classroom teaching. Improving the quality of teaching in schools is stressed as a central focus of meaningful classroom instruction and high quality education. In this research, teaching consulting was defined as an activity that covers reflection process oriented towards formative assessment and continuing professional development. Within this context, subject-specific teaching consulting and teaching professionalism with focus on PCK was reviewed. Further, the questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the current situation of teaching consulting and teachers' needs for consulting. And also, specific examples of subject-specific consulting based on our previous consulting experiences in math classes were shown. Alternative ways to improve subject teaching were derived through the conferences where consultants and consultees analyze video-taped lessons conducted by the consultees. By those results, a manual for invigorating teaching consulting was developed. The contents of the manual consists of setting conditions of teaching consulting and its implementation in the classroom teaching. The first part of the manual contains steps to establish teaching consulting system, the qualification and role of the consultant, system evaluation, etc. The second part of the manual presents the pre-preparation, prescription and implementation and follow-up management steps. Each part of the manual provides consultants with specific guidelines for each step. Finally, recommendations for making policy related to ways to invigorate teaching consulting was suggested. It is expected that specific examples and cases of subject-specific teaching consulting presented in this research will be used to narrow the gap between theory and practice of teaching consulting, and to help math, science and English teachers develop teaching professionalism.

The Present Status of Science Experimental Education and the Cautions on Using Toxic Chemicals (과학 실험 교육의 현황과 실험 시약 사용의 주의사항)

  • This research aims to perceive the present state of science experimental education practiced in middle school and also to improve the laboratorial environment. Accordingly, this study surveyed 297 middle school science teachers in Seoul to examine the risks and accidents occurred during lab sessions, the conditions of chemical waste disposal, and whether or not teacher's manual clearly states cautions on toxic chemicals. About 70%(69.6%) of science teachers were highly concerned about risks and toxicity of chemicals used in classes, 59.9% experienced actual accidents, and 83.2% were anxiety of incidents caused by chemicals. Besides, 55.2% of science teachers answered that they have little knowledge about caring noxious chemicals used in lab sessions. So it turns out that they need more specific education on handling toxic chemicals. More than one third(36.7%) answered that they disposed of chemical waste water without any special care or kept it in the lab after experiments. The number of chemicals as well used in middle school curriculum is increasing as grades gets higher toxic chemicals. However, there are few teachers' manual covering how to handle noxious chemicals. Therefore, in middle school curriculum the number of poisonous chemicals should be minimized as much as possible, and in case the toxic chemicals have to be used, teacher's guide book should state precautions on handling chemicals in detail. Also government should make it obligatory on schools to instate ventilator for chemical waste, or to transport the waste to proper disposal systems.

A Comparison Analysis on the Contents of Child 'Safety Education' Activities in 3~4 Year Old Nuri Curriculum Manual for Teachers (만3세와 만4세 누리과정 교사용 지도서에 나타난 유아 '안전교육' 활동의 내용 비교 분석)

  • This study is aimed at a comparison analyzing the contents of child 'safety education' in Three-four-year-old Nuri curriculum manual for teachers related activity type and activity form, life theme based on the criteria of analysis. First, the number of contents of child 'safety education' included in the 3 year old Nuri curriculum manual for teachers was 136, and among them, 71(52.2%) were from in big and small group activity. Total 124 contents were in 4-year old group and showed 58(46.8%) contents in big and small group activity. Second, it was identified that the Three-four-year-old Nuri curriculum handled highest number of child 'safety education' activities. Twenty-five activities from 'appliances' among a total of 127 child 'safety education' activities were included and included 21 activities in contents of 'safety for object, tool, and apparatus.' Thirty-three activities among 'health and safety' among a total of 131 child 'safety education' activities were included and it was identified that the highest number of child 'safety education' activities were conducted in 'safety for disease' contents. It will be hope to suggest some of the providing child 'safety education' of Three-four-year-old in education field, and to provide basic data for planning and suggesting directions for various training related to child safety education. Moreover, this study intends to provide basic data for composing necessary manual and program for child 'safety education' and to provide basic data for expanding the safety experience facility.

The Direct or Indirect Effects of Teachers' Stress on the Relationship Between Working Environment and the Prevalence of Work-related Musculoskeletal Symptoms (중·고등 교원의 직무환경과 작업 관련 근골격계 증상 유병률 관계에서 스트레스가 직·간접적으로 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The aim of the study is to examine whether mediating or moderating effects of stress between teachers' work environment and work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Methods: Two hundred nine participants took part in the study and completed the surveys including work environment, stress and work-related musculoskeletal disorders questionnaires. Hayes's PROCESS macro was used to test the research models for mediating and moderating effects of stress between work environment with teachers and work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Indirect effect was tested using bootstrapped confidence intervals. Results: The result confirmed that Stress served as a indirect mediator between work environment and work-related musculoskeletal disorders, whereas there was no significant the moderating effect. Conclusion: Stress mediates the relationship between work environment and work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, it is crucial that teachers' work environment that increases stress should be enhanced to reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

Survey on Teachers' Perception for the Consulting in Elementary Science Teaching (초등과학 수업 컨설팅에 대한 교사들의 인식조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for development of consulting model in elementary science class. For this, some questions on the teachers' perception for science instruction were surveyed to teachers : 13-item-questionnaires were given to 233 teachers in elementary school. The results of this study were as follows: Most of teachers were little understanding and experience of the science instruction consulting. They sensed that their science instruction were difficult, especially experimental activity in science class. They desired consulting mightly in their teaching methods for experimental activity. And it was found that most of them had a mind of consulting participation. Thus it is necessary to inform them the need of the instructional consulting. And in case of the development for the consulting manual, it should be consider the above results.
