Traditional magnetostrictive/piezoelectric laminate composites are generally in the regular geometries such as rectangles or disks. To explore properties of the irregular geometry magnetostrictive/piezoelectric transducer in the fundamental resonant frequency, a step dumb-bell shaped Magnetoelectric (ME) transducer is presented in this study. Both analytical and experimental investigations are carried out for the dumb-bell shaped transducer in the fundamental frequency. Comparing with the traditional rectangular transducer, the theory shows the resonant frequency of dumb-bell shaped transducer is reduced 31%, and the experiment gives the result of that is 37% which is independent of dc magnetic fields. The ratio of magnetoelectric voltage coefficient (MEVC) between the dumb-bell shaped and rectangular shaped transducers in theory is 66% comparing with that of in experiment is varying from 140% to 33% when the dc field is increased from 0 Oe to 118 Oe.

Magnetostrictive materials are used low frequency sonar transmitter instead of piezoelectric materials. But it is difficult to analyze due to the nonlinearity and hysteresis of magnetostrictive materials. This paper deals with the program development for the finite element modeling of magnetostrictive tonpilz transducers and for analyzing their acoustic characteristics. To take into account the nonlinearity of magnetostrictive materials, the magnetic field calculation is separated form the displacement calculation, and a curve fitting is adopted for the nonlinear behavior of the magnetic and mechanical strain fields. At first, the magnetic field is obtained by using a commercial FEM software and the displacement of the transducer is calculated by plugging the obtained magnetic field into forcing term. To verity the accuracy of the developed program, a comparison is made with a commercial code, ATILA.

Magnetoelectric (ME) composite is composed of a piezoelectric material and a magnetostrictive material. Among various ME structures, 2-2 type layered ME composites are anticipated to be used as high-sensitivity magnetic field sensors and energy harvesting devices especially operating at its resonance modes. Rosen type piezoelectric transducer using piezoelectric material is known to amplify a small electrical input voltage to a large electrical output voltage. The output voltage of these Rosen type piezoelectric transducers can be further enhanced by modifying them into ME composite structures. Herein, we fabricated Rosen type ME composites by sandwiching Rosen type PMN-PZT single crystal between two Ni layers and studied their ME coupling. However, the voltage step-up ratio at the resonance frequency was found to be smaller than the value calculated with αME value. The ATILA FEA (Finite Elements Analysis) simulation results showed that the position of the nodal point was changed with the presence of a magnetostrictive layer. Thus, while designing a Rosen type ME composite with high performance in a resonant driving situation, it is necessary to optimize the position of the nodal point by optimizing the thickness or length of the magnetostrictive layer.
Magnetostrictive materials are routinely employed as actuator and sensor elements in a wide variety of noise and vibration control problems. In infrastructural applications, other technologies such as hydraulic actuation, piezoelectric materials and more recently, magnetorheological fluids, are being favored for actuation and sensing purposes. These technologies have reached a degree of technical maturity and in some cases, cost effectiveness, which justify their broad use in infrastructural applications. Advanced civil structures present new challenges in the areas of condition monitoring and repair, reliability, and high-authority actuation which motivate the need to explore new methods and materials recently developed in the areas of materials science and transducer design. This paper provides an overview of a class of materials that because of the large force, displacement, and energy conversion effciency that it can provide is being considered in a growing number of quasistatic and dynamic applications. Since magnetostriction involves a bidirectional energy exchange between magnetic and elastic states, magnetostrictive materials provide mechanisms both for actuation and sensing. This paper provides an overview of materials, methods and applications with the goal to inspire novel solutions based on magnetostrictive materials for the design and control of advanced infrastructural systems.

An advantage of a magnetostrictive strip transducer for a long-range guided wave inspection is that the wave patterns are relatively clear and simple when compared to a conventional piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer. Therefore, if we can characterize the evolution of defect signals, it could be a promising tool for a structural health monitoring of pipes for a long period of time as well as an identification of flaws. However, when evaluating a signal during a realistic field examination, it should be careful because of some spurious signals or false indications, such as signals due to a directionality, multiple reflections, mode conversion, geometrical reflections etc. Mode converted signals from a realistic piping mockup were acquired and analysed. We found mode conversions between a torsional guided wave T(0,1) mode and a flexural F(1,3) or longitudinal L(0,2) mode generated by a magnetostrictive strip transducer. Based on the experimental observations, an interpretation of the source of the mode conversion is discussed in a viewpoint of electromagnetic properties and structure of the strip transducer.

An ultrasonic magnetostrictive transducer-based phased-array system for imaging defects in plate structures is newly proposed. In that most ultrasonic phased array systems rely on piezoelectric transducers or electromagnetic acoustic transducers, this system has its own unique feature of employing magnetostrictive transducers. Interest in using a phased array system using magnetostrictive transducers has been recently reported for pipe inspection but no such system has been developed for plate inspection. In this investigation, we aim to propose a phased array system using OL-MPTs (Omnidirectional Lamb wave Magnetostrictive Patch Transducers) for plate inspection. The developed system consists of a multi-channel function generator, power amplifiers, preamplifiers and a data acquisition unit. In the process of its development, each of the units must be checked and in doing so, we suggest types of ultrasonic wave experiments that should be carried out. Finally, the phased system using a transducer array composed of eight OL-MPTs is newly configured and is applied for actual crack detection experiments.
This paper proposes a magnetoelectric (ME) composite transducer structure consisting of a magnetostrictive H-type Fe-Ni fork substrate and piezoelectric PZT plates. The fork composite structure has a higher ME voltage coefficient compared to other ME composite structures due to the higher quality (Q) factor. The ME sensitivity of the fork structure reaches 12 V/Oe (i.e., 150 V/cm Oe). The fork composite with two PZT plates electrically connected in series exhibits over 5 times higher ME voltage coefficient than the output of the rectangle structure in the same size. The experiment shows the composite of a Fe-Ni fork substrate and PZT plates has a significantly enhanced ME voltage coefficient and a higher ME sensitivity relative to the prior sandwiched composite laminates. By the use of a lock-in amplifier with 10 nV resolution, this transducer can detect a weak magnetic field of less than $10^{-12}$ T. This transducer can also be designed for a magnetoelectric energy harvester due to its passive high-efficiency ME energy conversion.
An Fe$_{49}$ Co$_{49}$ V$_2$alloy is annealed in thermal annealing furnace at 50$0^{\circ}C$, 75$0^{\circ}C$, 80$0^{\circ}C$, and 90$0^{\circ}C$. Annealed samples were cooled in air. The magnetostriction is measured by using a Michelson laser interferometer. Receiving the feedback signal of interference, a mirror attached to piezoelectric transducer (PZT) maintains the optical path length (OPL) between two arms of laser interferometer relatively constant. The feedback voltage is calibrated to the OPL variation. A magnetostriction of 2$\times$10$^{-6}$ at H = 60 Oe increases up to 33.68$\times$10$^{-6}$ at an annealing temperature of 90$0^{\circ}C$, suggesting that the magnetostrictive characteristics are improved by the microstructural modification.
