  • The effects of manganese substitution on the crystallographic and magnetic properties of Li-Zn-Cu ferrite, $Li_{0.5}Zn_{0.2}Cu_{0.4}Mn_xFe_{2.1-x}O_4$ ($0.0{\leq}x{\leq}0.8$), were investigated. Ferrites were synthesized via a conventional ceramic method. We confirmed the formation of crystallized particles using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. All of the samples showed a single phase with a spinel structure, and the lattice constants linearly decreased as the substituted manganese content increased, and the particle size of the samples also somewhat decreased as the doped manganese content increased. All the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra can be fitted with two Zeeman sextets, which are the typical spinel ferrite spectra of $Fe^{3+}$ with A- and B-sites, and one doublet. The cation distribution was determined from the variation of the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ parameters and of the absorption area ratio. The magnetic behavior of the samples showed that an increase in manganese content led to a decrease in the saturation magnetization, whereas the coercivity was nearly constant throughout. The maximum saturation magnetization was 73.35 emu/g at x = 0.0 in $Li_{0.5}Zn_{0.2}Cu_{0.4}Mn_xFe_{2.1-x}O_4$.

  • This paper proposes an inrush current control technique of matching transformer for configuration of dynamic voltage restorer(DVR). The DVR system consist of PWM inverter to inject arbitrary voltage, LC low pass filter as harmonic eliminator and matching transformer for isolation. However, the matching transformer has an excess of inrush current by magnetic flux saturation in the core. Due to this inrush current, the rating of matching transformers is double for needed nominal rating for protection of DVR. Therefore, in this paper, the modeling method of magnetic flux saturation is used to analyze a magnitude of inrush current, and additional current controller is used for PWM inverter output regulation. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed control method.

  • For heat-assisted magnetic recording, magnetization reversal probabilities of nano-Pt/MnSb multilayer film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy under thermal pulse activation were investigated numerically by solving the Landau-Lifshift Gilbert Equation. Magnetic parameters of nano-Pt/MnSb multilayer were used with anisotropy energy of $3{\times}10^5$ erg/cc and saturation magnetization of 2100 G, which offer more than 10 y data stability at room temperature. Scheme of driven magnetic field and thermal pulse on writing mechanism was designed closely to real experiment. This study found that the chosen material is potential to be used as a high density magnetic storage that requires low writing field less than two-hundreds Oersted through definite heating and cooling interval. The possibility of writing data with a zero driven magnetic field also became an important result. Further study is recommended on the thickness of media and thermal pulse design as the essential parameters of the reversal magnetization.

  • Coercivity is defined as the magnetic field strength required to reduce the magnetic polarization to zero of magnetic specimen which has been previously magnetized to saturation. This quantity is a reference for classifying soft and hard magnetic materials. We have constructed the measuring system for measurement of coercivity of ferromagnetic materials in open magnetic circuit. The measurement range of the constructed system is from tens A/m to tens kA/m, the combined uncertainty is ${\pm}$0.22 kA/m as coercivity is 14.63 kA/m.

  • By appliying an slternate pulsed magnetic field -generated by using a sequential ignition circuit and a magnet exciting circuit- with peak value of about 10 T to the rod type Nd based magnet Nd2Fe12.7Cr1.3B with length of 5 mm and diameter of 3.6 mm, the basic magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization, residual magnetization, coercivity, maximum energy products, magnetic anisotropy and anisotropic field are investigated with obtaining the major and minor J-H loops of the magnet. The increase in coercivity due to eddy currents in ac measurement of coercivity is calculated considering eddy current loss by analyzing a wave of generating magnetic field. The average coercivity calculated for the magnet is about 12.2 kOe, anisotropy magnetic field and anisotropic constant are measured as 60 kOe 2.43 Mj/$m^3$, respectively.

  • Magnetic nanoparticles have been investigated for use as biomedical purposes for several years. For biomedical applications the use of particles that present superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature is preferred [1-4]. To control the magnetic materials by magnetic field is essential locate particle to the suitable destination on feeding by injection. In order to use them properly, the particles should be nano size. However there are many difficulties in applications, because there is lack of identifications in nano magnetic properties. In our studies, structural and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles were investigated by XRD, VSM, TEM, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. At 13 K, hyperfine fields of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ were 516 kOe and 490 kOe, that of $Fe_3O_4$ were 517 kOe and 482 kOe. The saturation magnetizations were 21.42 emu/g and 39.42 emu/g. The particle size of powders is 5~19 nm.

  • Structural and magnetic properties of $Fe_{50}Mn_{50}$ nanocrystalline alloys prepared by the mechanical alloying technique (using commercial Fe and Mn powders as the precursors) are studied as a function of milling time, 1 hr to 48 hrs. The nano-crystallite size and shape are examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of milling time on structural characterization was investigated using X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). Both XRD and EXAFS studies showed that the alloying process should be completed after 36 hrs milling. Concerning the magnetic behavior, the data obtained from superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) exhibited both magnetic saturation ($M_s$) and coercivity ($H_c$) depend strongly on the milling time, which are related to the changes in the crystallite size and magnetic dilution.

  • Change of magnetic properties in CoCrPt/Ti perpendicular media with varying CoCrPt films thickness has been studied. As CoCrPt films thickness increase, the Ms(magnetization saturation) drastically increases at thinner thickness and gradually increases with further increase in thickness from 25nm. This Ms behaviour is associated with primarily the formation of "amorphous-like" reacted layer by intermixing of CoCrPt and Ti at CoCrPt/Ti interface and secondarily change of Cr segregation mode with varying the CoCrPt films thickness. Magnetic domain structure distinctively changes with increasing CoCrPt magnetic layer(ML) thickness. Also the strength of exchange coupling measured from the slope in demagnetizing region in M-H loop changes with ML thickness. Details of the above magnetic properties will be discussed. The expansion of lattice parameters a and c at thinner thickness suggests that Cr segregation mode may be connected with the residual stress of the films. Finally, negative nucleation field(Hn) behaviour with the exchange slope will be reported.

  • The tubes in heat exchanger are typically made from copper alloy, stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium alloy material. type-439 ferritic stainless steel is ferromagnetic material, and furnish higher heat transfer rates than austenitic stainless steels and higher resistance to corrosion-induced flaws. Ferritic stainless steel can typically be found in low-pressure(LP) feedwater heaters and moisture separator reheaters(MSRs). LP feedwater heaters generally utilize thin wall type-439 stainless steel tubing, whereas MSRs typically employ a heavier wall tubing with integral fins. Service-induced damage can occur on the OD(outside diameter) surface of type-439 ferritic stainless steel tubing which is employed for MSRs tubing, and the most typical damage mechanism is vibration-induced tube-to-TSP(tube support plate) wear and fatigue cracking. The wear has been reported that occurs mainly on the OD surface. Accordingly, in this study, we have evaluated the flaw sizing capability of magnetic saturation eddy current technique using magnetic saturation probe and flawed specimen.

  • Metallic suture anchors are very useful and common fixation devices that are inserted into the target bone to sustain the tendon of a patient with musculus supraspinatus tendon ruptures. On the other hand, the presence of a metallic material prosthesis, such as a metal suture anchor, causes severe MR imaging artifacts, including field distortion, signal loss, and failure of fat suppression. The difference in magnetic susceptibility between metal and other organic materials causes magnetic field distortion surrounding the prosthesis. The resulting magnetic field inhomogeneity makes the images with a lower signal-to-noise ratio and distortion. For a patient with a suture anchor implanted, MR imaging is the golden standard for determining the postoperative prognosis, and a fat-saturation sequence is one of the imaging methods most affected by metal-induced artifacts. In this study, three fat-saturation sequences were compared. Artifact quantification and contrast comparison between the supraspinatus tendon and the surrounding muscle were presented. The images obtained using the STIR pulse sequence showed fewer susceptibility artifacts and better visibility in the supraspinatus tendon and the tissue area. Therefore, the STIR sequence is the most appropriate fat-saturation imaging method for patients with a metallic prosthesis.
