Purpose: This exploratory study was to identify the use of complementary and alternative medicine(CAM) in women with breast cancer and to analyze which factor influence CAM use. Methods: 114 patients with breast cancer were identified and approached. The instrument used to gather data were the common types, main reasons and effects as well as stress, mood states and fatigue. Results: 42.7% of all participants reported the use of CAM. The most common types of CAM used were Phellinus linteus, elm tree, and vitamin C. The main reasons for CAM use were to boost the immune system and to prevent recurrence. Prayer, massage, Shitake mushroom, and Ganoderma lucidum were, identified as being more effective than others. 93.6% of the respondents informed their physicians of their use of CAM. Logistic regression analysis determined that stress, mood states, and duration after diagnosis were factors significantly associated with CAM use. Conclusion: CAM use is increasing among patients with breast cancer. Health care professionals are in the main position to identify what treatments patients are using and implement CAM therapies that can be helpful to relieve patient symptoms related to treatment and psychological distress.
The contents of ergocalcife.of (vit D$_2$) and cholecalciferol (vit D$_3$) in mushrooms (Lentinus edodes, Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Flammulina velutipes, Auricularia auricular, Gyropora esculenta, Romaria botftis, Coriorus versicolar, Ganoderma lucidum) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), using external standard method. The methods included saponification, extraction, drying, filtering and quantification with analytical HPLC (waters Inc.). The contents of vit D$_2$ and D$_3$ found in different mushroom species. A. auricular, and L. edodes contained high amounts of vit D, 167.8, 72.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$/100 g of edible portion, respectively. On the other hand A. bisporus showed the lowest contents of vit D among analyzed mushrooms.
Sclerotia of Wolfiporia cocos are of medicinal and culinary value. The genes and molecular mechanisms involved in W. cocos sclerotial formation are poorly investigated because of the lack of a suitable and reproducible transformation system for W. cocos. In this study, a PEG/CaCl2-mediated genetic transformation system for W. cocos was developed. The promoter Pgpd from Ganoderma lucidum effectively drove expression of the hygromycin B phosphotransferase gene in W. cocos, and approximately 30 transformants were obtained per 10 μg DNA when the protoplast suspension density was 106 protoplasts/ml. However, no transformants were obtained under the regulation of the PtrpC promoter from Aspergillus nidulans.
Biodegradation of endocrine-disrupting bisphenol A was investigated with several white rot fungi (Irpex lacteus, Trametes versicolor, Ganoderma lucidum, Polyporellus brumalis, Pleurotus eryngii, Schizophyllum commune) isolated in Korea and two transformants of T. versicolor (strains MrP 1 and MrP 13). I. lacteus degraded 99.4% of 50 mg/l bisphenol A in 3 h incubation and 100% in 12 h incubation. which was the highest degradation rate among the fungal strains tested. T. versicolor degraded 98.2% of 50 mg/l bisphenol A in 12 h incubation. Unexpectedly, the transformant of the Mn-repressed peroxidase gene of T. versicolor, strain MrP 1, degraded 76.5% of 50 mg/l bisphenol A in 12 h incubation, which was a lower degradation rate than wild-type T. versicolor. The removal of bisphenol A by I. lacteus occurred mainly by biodegradation rather than adsorption. Optimum carbon sources for biodegradation of bisphenol A by I. lacteus were glucose and starch, and optimum nitrogen sources were yeast extract and tryptone in a minimal salts medium; however, bisphenol A degradation was higher in nutrient-rich YMG medium than that in a minimal salts medium. The initial degradation of endocrine disruptors was accompanied by the activities of manganese peroxidase and laccase in the culture of I. lacteus.

This experiments were carried out to development low-priced mushroom culture media, and the results were as follows : Mycerial growth and density of Pleurotus ostreatus in the culture media of 40% of yellow soil, upland soil and lowland soil(each and all) added 60% sawdust and rice bran(80:20, %, v/v) were 89, 88, 68mm/10days in that order. Lentinus edodes were in the media of $40{\sim}50%$ of that added 60% sawdust and rice bran(80:20, %, v/v) were 74, 71, 68mm/10days. Ganoderma lucidum were in the media of $40{\sim}50%$ of that added 60% sawdust and rice bran(80:20, %, v/v) were 98, 94, 89mm/10days in that order.
The study was carried out to evaluate the radical scavenging activity, and antimutagenic and anticancer effects in Korean soybean paste(doenjang) added with various mushrooms. Ganoderma lucidum doenjang(Gl-TD) showed significant inhibitory activity against the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, with an IC$\sub$50/ value of 245$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. In contrast, the other doenjang varieties appeared to have weaker antioxidant activity. Four kinds of doenjang didn't have any antimutagenic activity against N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) by adding of 5mg/plate, but exhibited a strong inhibitory effect(55∼70%) against aflatoxin B$_1$(AFB$_1$). Especially Phellinus linteus doenjang(Pl-TD) inhibited more than 70% of the mutagenicity induced by AFB$_1$ in Salmonella typhimurium TA100. On the other hand, the mushroom doenjang varieties showed relatively weak activity toward MNNG in SOS chromotest, their inhibitory rate ranging from 23% to 33%. Methanol extracts of Gl-TD and Pl-TD inhibited by 91∼92% the growth of AGS gastric cancer cells in a concentration of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$.

Mushroom mycelia-cultured traditional meju (MTM) was prepared by inoculating 10% submerged-liquid culture of mushroom strains to five holes (1$\times$3 cm) per side of the traditionally-fermented meiu (10$\times$10$\times$10cm), followed by incubating additional 4 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$. Mushroom strains used were Neutari (Pleurotus ostreatus, PO), Yeongji (Ganoderma lucidum, GL), Synryeong (Agaricus blazei, AB), Ypsae (Grifola frondosa, GF), Pyogo(Lentinus edodes, PE), Dongchunghacho (Paecilomyces japonicus, PJ) and Sanghwang (Phellinus linteus PL). All MTMs showed an enhanced anticarcinogenicity against S-180 cell-induced mouse ascites cancer antimutagenicity against aflatoxin B$_1$ (AFB$_1$) and 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ), and sensory qualities, relative to control meju. Such positive effects of MTM prepared with Sanghwang, Yeongji, or Synryeong were superior to those of MTM with Ypsae, Pyogo, Dongchunghacho, or Neutari.
On the inter-order protoplast fusants of Lentinus edodes and Ganoderma lucidum was the antitumor activity test performed and the fusant P22 was selected. The hot water extract of the cultured mycelia of P22 were purified by DEAE-cellulose chromatographya and the resulting purified fraction was designated as P22A. It was found to be a proteoglycan whose molecular weight was 47 kDa. When examined for immunopotentiation activity, P22A increased the number of colony forming unit in the bone marrow stem cells to 3-folds. It also potentiated the secretion of nitric oxide in activated macrophages to 2-folds. In humoral immune response, it increased the activities of the alkaline phosphatase in differentiated B cells to 1.6-folds and the number of plaque forming cells to 1.8-folds. In cellular immune response, it restored the depressed response of delayed type hypersensitivity in tumor bearing mice to normal level. These results suggest that P22A have potential to restore the decreased immune activity of the tumor bearing mice to normal level.
To find pharmacologically active hybrids among the inter-order protoplast fusants of Lentinula edodes and Ginoderma lucidam the antitumor test was performed and the fusant P22 was selected among them. The hot water and alkaline extracts from the cultured mycelia of P22 were purified and separated into four fractions by DEAE-cellulose anion exchange chromatography. When a dose of 20 mg/kg/day of each fractions was injected into ICR mice by i.p., the tumor inhibition ratio of Fr. IV against solid sarcoma 180 was the higher than any other fraction. Fr. IV was a protein-bound polysaccharide which was composed of 69. 12% polysacchafide and 9.76% protein and the molecular weight of Fr. IV was $6.7{\times}10^4$ dalton.
Eight edible mushrooms grown in Korea were extracted with ethanol at room temperature for 24 hr. The extracts were investigated for their antioxidant activities as measured by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation scavenging activities. Among the mushroom extracts evaluated in this study, the ethanolic extracts from Ganoderma lucidum and Pleurotus eryngii showed the greatest potential antioxidant activity, by producing 85 and 88% inhibition in DPPH radical scavenging method and 219 and 165 mg ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant capacity (AEAC), respectively. Total phenolics and total flavonoids in the ethanolic extracts were determined by spectrophotometric method. Positive correlations were found between total phenolic contents in the extracts and their antioxidant activities, suggesting that phenolic contents in the mushrooms extracts are mainly responsible for their antioxidant activities.
