  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of the hydrocarbon (HC) emissions and to reduce cold start hydrocarbons in gasoline engines. An HC adsorber was, used and it coated was by Pd/Rh catalyst with zeolite on a honeycomb monolith. The HCs were efficiently trapped at temperatures below $100^{\circ}C by physical adsorption. After adsorption, they were reduced gradually by the catalytic oxidation of Pd/Rh catalysts as the adsorber temperature increased above $100^{\circ}C. Increasing amounts of methane, ethylene and n-butane were emitted as the fuel-air mixture became richer and the engine speed decreased. As the temperature of adsorber increased, high-number carbons into low-number carbons. Thus, the C4 concentration decreased significantly during the first 30 seconds, and the C2 concentration increased continuously.

  • The developent of ceramic combustor is being increased beca- use of the excellent physical properties of ceramic material, that is, high-resistant strength, high emissivity power and high corrosin-resistance. Ceramic combustor has been interested in the application of ultra-lean combustion for low NO$_{x}$ emission and gaseuos waste incineration with good combustion. This experimental study was conducted to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics of wall recess type ceramic combustor with equivalence ratio, mixture flow velocity and wall recess depth as parameters. The results in this study are as follows: 1. Wall recess played a important role to extend flame stability region. 2. The peak temperature of gas was peoportional to equivalence ratio, mixture flow velocity and wall recess depth. 3. The static pressure of mixing chamber and inlet temperature depended on the position of flame zone. 4. NO reduction was achieved by lean mixture without lower combustibility.y.

  • The characteristics of two stage compressor which is constituted of two separated reciprocating compressors was tested measuring the volumetric efficiency of each compressor at suction of both bighandlowpressdresideusillgorificetypeflolrmeters. The volumetric efficiency of low pressure side compressor was lower than that of the high side when they were operating under the same compression ratio. And it tended to reduce obviously by lowering evaporating temperature resulting in a markable reduction of refrigerating capacity at the same time. It is assumed that the falling of volumetric efficiency at low side compressor was directed by the decrease in evaporating temperature which derives the falls of gas pressure at suction, increase in compression ratio, and gas flow resistance at suction and discharge valves.

  • The paper will present chip formation mechanism and surface integrity generation mechanism based on the systematical experimental tests. Some basic factors such as the end milling cutter tooth number, cutting forces, cutting temperature, cutting vibration, the chip status, the surface roughness, the hardness distribution and the metallographic texture of the machined surface layer are involved. the chip formation mechanism is typical thermal plastic shear localization at high cutting speed with less number og shear ribbons and bigger shear angle than at low speed, which means lack of chip deformation. The high cutting speed with much more cutting teeth will be beneficial to the reduction of cutting forces, enlarge machining stability region, depression of temperature increment, auti-fatigability as well as surface roughness. The burrs always exists both at low cutting speed and at high cutting speed. So the deburr process should be arranged for milling titanium alloy in any case.

  • Recently, to avoid global warming, reduction of $CO_2$ generation has been demanded. Each car manufacture takes positive actions for improvement in fuel consumption by various kinds of countermeasures, e.g. improving engine efficiency, using alternative fuels, lightening the car body. Regarding lightening of the car body, aluminum alloys and high tensile strength steels has been gradually adopted as lightweight materials. However, such materials are normally not easy to be treated with zinc phosphate system. Focusing the pre-treatment processes, low temperature phosphate system could be demanded for energy saving. This time, new surface conditioning process for lightweight materials and low temperature phosphate system shall be discussed.

  • The hydrogen reduction behavior of ultrasonic ball-milled $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder, which is highly related with micro-pore structure, was investigated by thermogravimetry(TG) and hygrometry system. EDS and TEM results represented that the ultrasonic ball-milled $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder consisted of the agglomerates which was confirmed as a homogeneous mixture of $WO_3$ and CuO particles. It was found that the reduction reaction of CuO was retarded by initial micro-pores which are smaller than 40 nm in the ultrasonic ball-milled $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder. The earlier agglomeration of Cu particles at comparably low temperature decreased the volume of micro-pores in the $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder which caused the retardation of $WO_3$ reduction reaction. These results clearly explain that the micro-pore structure significantly affected the reduction reaction of $WO_3$ and CuO in the $WO_3-CuO$ nanopowder.

  • OPC production requires high calorific value and emits a large amount of $CO_2$ through decarbonation of limestone, accounting for about 7% of $CO_2$ emissions. To reduce $CO_2$ emissions during the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) production process, there is a method of reducing the consumption of cement or lower temperature calcination for OPC product. In this study, for energy consumption reduction, we prepared Hauyne-belite cement by calcination at a low temperature compared to that used for OPC and studied the early hydration properties of the synthesized Hauyne-belite cement. We set the ratios of Hauyne and belite to 8 : 2, 5 : 5 and 3 : 7. For the hydration properties of the synthesized Hauyne-belite cement, we tested heat of hydration of paste and the compressive strength of mortar, using XRD and SEM for analysis of hydrates. As for our results, the temperature for optimum synthesis of Hauyne-belite is $1,250^{\circ}C$. Compressive strength of synthesized Hauyne-belite cement is lower than that of OPC, but it is confirmed that compressive strength of synthesized Hauyne-belite cement with mixing in of some other materials can be similar to that of OPC.

  • [ $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Mn_xO_3$ ] cathode as a high performance cathode on YSZ electrolyte was studied by analyzing impedance spectra. It was shown that cathode property of $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Mn_xO_3$ is bet ter than that of$La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$. At $700^{\circ}C$ in air environment, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_3$ cathode on CGO- layered YSZ electrolyte showed very low area specific resistance of $0.14{\Omega}cm^2$, which is low enough for intermediate-temperature sol id oxide fuel cells. This is because material properties of ionic conductivity and thermal expansion compatibility with electrolyte were optimized. Judging from activation energy and oxygen part i al pressure dependance of cathode property, it was noted that oxygen surface exchange kinetics is dominantly influential on cathode property in higher temperature region than $700^{\circ}C$ and oxygen self-diffusion in cathode material is more influential in lower temperature region.

  • Various types of NOx storage catalysts for NGV's were designed, manufactured, and tested in this work on a model gas test bench. As in most of other studies on NOx storage catalyst, alkaline earth metal barium(Ba) was used as the NOx adsorbing substance. The barium-based experimental catalysts were designed to contain different amounts of Ba and precious metals at various ratios. Reaction tests were performed to investigate the NOx storage capacity and the NOx conversion efficiency of the experimental catalysts. From the results, it was found that when Ba loading of a catalyst was increased, the quantity of NOx stored in the catalyst increased in the high temperature range over 350. With more Ba deposition, the NOx conversion efficiency as well as its peak value increased in the high temperature range, but decreased in the low temperature range. The best of de-NOx catalyst tested in this study was catalyst B, which was loaded with 42.8 g/L of Ba in addition to Pt, Pd and Rh in the ratio of 7:7:1. In the low temperature range under $450^{\circ}C$, the NOx conversion efficiencies of the catalysts were lower when $CH_4$, instead of either $C_3H_6$ or $C_3H_8$, was used as the reductant.

  • Growth response of 'Sambokkul' watermelon grafted onto different rootstocks including 4 $Citrullus$ rootstocks and 3 other cucurbitaceous rootstocks was evaluated at two different temperature regimes. Significant reduction in plant growth rate was observed in plants grown at low temperatures (LT) as compared to those grown at normal or optimal temperatures. Relative growth reduction were 40~47% for vine length, 39~51% for total leaf area, 38~59% for shoot fresh weight, and 57~87% for plant dry weight, respectively. Watermelon rootstock PI 482322 showed comparable plant growth as the most popular rootstock 'Shintozwa' even at LT. 'Sambokkul' watermelon grafted onto watermelon hybrids, 'PI 271969 ${\times}$ PI 296341' and 'PI 271769 ${\times}$ Calhoun Gray', showed comparable plant growth as 'FR Dantos' bottle gourd rootstock. Index of growth ability at LT, which was calculated on the basis of reduced rate of vine length, dry weight and leaf area, was significantly high in $C.$ $martinezii$, 'Shintozwa', PI 482322, and 'PI 271769 ${\times}$ PI 296341' rootstocks (50% or higher) and low in own-rooted 'Sambokkul' or in watermelon plants on 'Knight' rootstock. Watermelon hybrids, 'PI 271969 ${\times}$ PI 296341' and 'PI 271769 ${\times}$ Calhoun Gray', showed better or at least comparable growth at low temperatures as compared to 'FR Dantos', confirming the feasibility of using watermelon rootstocks even in low temperature conditions.
