  • Background: There have been various studies to investigate the mechanisms of DNA damage from low-energy electrons. To understand the mechanism of these strand breaks, it is necessary to investigate the dissociation mechanism of the DNA constituents, that is, bases, sugars, and phosphates. Materials and Methods: We studied the dissociation of thymine base upon interaction with low-energy electrons. For this experiment, thymine powder was pressed onto the indium base and irradiated by 5 eV electrons. Results and Discussion: Non-irradiated and irradiated thymine samples were compared and analyzed using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic technique to analyze the dissociation patterns of the molecular bonds after low-energy electron irradiation of thymine. Conclusion: With 5 eV electron irradiation, C-C and N-C = O bonds are the primary dissociations that occur in thymine molecules.

  • The interaction between a vibrating structure and a surrounding acoustic medium determines the acoustic power propagating into the far-field. A straightforward method to reduce the radiated power is to reduce the vibration of the structure. However it is more efficient to control the modes of the structure separately since each vibration mode of the structure has different radiation efficiency. An efficient method to reduce the sound radiation in the low frequency region is proposed by reducing the radiation efficiency of the structure.

  • Novoloid fibers have high chemical, flame and thermal resistance; however they have low tensile properties. Effects of gamma irradiation on the tensile properties of novoloid fibers have been investigated. Loop and knot resistance have also been examined. Maximum tenacity of the single fiber increased with an increase of the radiation dose applied. According to the loop and knot tenacity results it is found that brittleness has been also affected by the amount of radiation dose.

  • This experiment was carried out to identify and to compare the radiosensitivities of bacteriz isolated from the sources of different radiation exposure histories. Among 10 strains isolated in this investigation, 4 strains of bacteria, Bacillus firmus, Bacillus brevis, Baciilus subtilis and Bacillus sphaericus were isolated from high and low radioactive sites simulaneously. Bacterial strains isolated from radioactive sources such as reactor and isotope production rooms were more resistant to irradiation than the microganisms from medical products and laboratories, however, there was no significance in radiosensitivity in the same species of bacteriz, even if they were isolated from different radiation exposure histories.

  • The use of thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) for beta dosimetry has been encumbered by the energy-dependent responses of TLDs to beta radiation. This energy-dependent response is due to the low penetrating ability of beta particles. Thus the determination of the beta dose imparted to an exposed TLD chip can be accurately determined only if the energy distribution of beta radiation is correctly accounted for. So precise beta dosimeter used TLD chips place under several aluminum filters of varying thicknesses and developed to correctly determine doses due to radiation fields where the beta energy distribution is unknown.

  • Along with the needs for feasibility in the field of space applications, interests in radiation-hardened electronics is growing rapidly. Gallium nitride (GaN)-based devices have been widely researched so far owing to superb radiation resistance. Among them, research on the most abundant protons in low earth orbit (LEO) is essential. In this paper, proton irradiation effects on parameter changes, degradation mechanism, and correlation with reliability of GaN-based devices are summarized.

  • The objective of this study was to compare and analyze for seasonal long short-wave radiation characteristics between downtown area and suburban area in Daegu through field observations. This study was confirmed the regional and seasonal radiation environments and it can utilize as basic data for the analysis of the urban radiation environment and the effects of urbanization. The followings are main results from this study. 1) The downward shortwave radiation showed the similar value of the radiation generally in the downtown area and the suburban area of the city during the winter and summer season. but, long-wave radiation is always higher in downtown area. 2) In case of the long-wave radiation at two stations, we observed $230{\sim}270W/m^2$ in the winter season and $415{\sim}470W/m^2$ in summer season. As a result, we can see summer season is higher than winter about two times in long-wave radiation. 3) In case of short wave radiation, there is high correlation between two stations in winter season but very low correlation between two stations in summer season because of local atmosphere unstability and etc.

  • Cellular response to ionizing radiation is affected by cell types, radiation doses, and post-irradiation time. Based on the trypan blue dye exclusion assay in normal oral mucosal cells (OM cells), a 48 h post-irradiation was sufffcient and an adequate time point for the evaluation of radiation sensitivity Its $LD_{50}$ was approximately 1.83 Gy To investigate possible biomarkers useful for the biological radiodosimetry of normal epithelial cells (p53, c-fos, cyclin D1, cdc-2, pRb) EGF receptor phosphorylation and Erk activation were evaluated at different radiation doses and different post-irradiation times. From 0.5 Gy, p53 was accumulated in the nucleus of basal cells of the OM raft culture at 4 h post-irradiation and sustained up to 24 h post-irradiation, which suggests that radiation-induced apoptosis or damage repair was not yet completed. The number of p53 positive cells and biosynthesis of p53 were correlated with radiation doses. Both cyclin D1 and c-fos were only transiently induced within 1 h post-irradiation. Cyclin D1 was induced at all radiation doses. However, cfos induction was highest at 0.1 Gy, approximately 7.3 fold more induction than the control, whose induction was reduced in a reverse correlation with radiation dose. The phosphorylation pattern of cdc-2 and pRb were unaffected by radiation. In contrast to A431 tails overexpressing the EGF receptor approximately 8.5 fold higher than normal epithelial, the OM cells reduced the basal level of the EGF receptor phosphorylation in a radiation dose dependent fashion. In conclusion, among radiation-induced biomolecules, the p53 nuclear accumulation may be considered for the future development of a useful marker far biological radiodosimetry in normal epithelial tissue since it was sustained for a longer period and showed a dose response relationship. Specific c-fos induction at a low dose may also be an important finding in this study It needs to be studied further for the elucidation of its possible connection with the low dose radio-adaptive response.

  • Acoustic radiation efficiency is a crucial factor to estimate Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) of ships accurately. This paper describes a numerical method to analyse acoustic radiation efficiency of one side-wetted rectangular Mindlin plate with simply supported boundaries excited by a harmonic point force. Transverse displacements of plate and acoustic radiation pressures are evaluated by the mode superposition method. The acoustic radiation efficiencies analyzed by both Mindlin and thin plate theories show little differences at monopole and corner modes of low frequency regions but relatively large differences at edge and critical modes of high frequency regions. Especially, the critical frequency with the highest acoustic radiation efficiency evaluated by the Mindlin plate theory is higher than that of thin plate theory. In addition, the acoustic loading effect of fluid also increases bending wave-number of plate and its critical frequency. Finally, the acoustic radiation characteristics of plates with different aspect ratios and thicknesses through numerical analyses are investigated and discussed.
