  • The influences of the large amplitude free vibrations of simply supported Timoshenko beams with ends restrained to remain a fixed distance apart and with no axial restraints, which cause a longitudinal elastic force and a longitudinal inertia force, respectively, are investigated. The equations of motion derived by an appropriate linearizarion of the nonlinear strain- displacement relation have nonlinear terms arising from large curvature, longitudinal elastic force and longitudinal inertia force. The fourth order nonlinear partial differential equations for the deflection, can be reduced to the nonlinear ordinary differential equations by means of Galerkin procedure and a modal expansion. The general response and frequensy-amplitude relations are derived by the perturbation method of strained parameters. Comparison with previously published results is made.

  • Nonlinear mechanical behaviors of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates using cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CSCNTs) dispersed epoxy are evaluated and compared with those of CFRP laminates without CSCNTs. Off-axis compression tests are performed to obtain the stress-strain relations. One-parameter plasticity model is applied to characterize the nonlinear response of unidirectional laminates, and nonlinear behaviors of laminates with and without CSCNTs are compared. Clear improvement in stiffness of off-axis specimens by using CSCNTs is demonstrated, which is considered to contribute the enhancement of the longitudinal compressive strength of unidirectional laminates and compressive strength of multidirectional laminates. Finally, longitudinal compressive strengths are predicted based on a kink band model including the nonlinear responses in order to demonstrate the improvement in longitudinal strength of CFRP by dispersing CSCNTs.

  • In this study, considering the hydroelastic response represented by the springing and whipping phenomena, we propose a method of estimating the fatigue damage in the longitudinal connections of ships. First, we screened the design sea states using a load transfer function based on the frequency domain. We then conducted a time domain fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis using WISH-FLEX, an in-house code based on the weakly nonlinear approach. To obtain an effective and robust analytical result of the hydroelastic response, we also conducted an experimental model test with a 1/50-scale backbone-based model of a ship, and compared the experimental results with those obtained from the FSI analysis. Then, by combining the results obtained from the hydroelastic response with those obtained from the numerical fatigue analysis, we developed a fatigue damage estimation method. Finally, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed method, we evaluated the fatigue strength for the longitudinal connections of the real ship and compared it with the results obtained from the model tests.

  • One of the shortcomings of seismic bridge design codes is the lack of clarity in defining the role of different seismic isolation systems with linear or nonlinear behavior in terms of R-factor. For example, based on AASHTO guide specifications for seismic isolation design, R-factor for all substructure elements of isolated bridges should be half of those expressed in the AASHTO standard specifications for highway bridges (i.e., R=3 for single columns and R=5 for multiple column bent) but not less than 1.50. However, no distinction is made between two commonly used types of seismic isolation devices, i.e., elastomeric rubber bearing (ERB) with linear behavior, and lead rubber bearing (LRB) with nonlinear behavior. In this paper, five existing bridges located in Iran with two types of deck-pier connection including ERB and LRB isolators, and two bridge models with monolithic deck-pier connection are developed and their R-factor values are assessed based on the Uang's method. The average R-factors for the bridges with ERB isolators are calculated as 3.89 and 4.91 in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, which are not in consonance with the AASHTO guide specifications for seismic isolation design (i.e., R=3/2=1.5 for the longitudinal direction and R=5/2=2.5 for the transverse direction). This is a clear indicator that the code-prescribed R-factors are conservative for typical bridges with ERB isolators. Also for the bridges with LRB isolators, the average computed R-factors equal 1.652 and 2.232 in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, which are in a good agreement with the code-specified R-factor values. Moreover, in the bridges with monolithic deck-pier connection, the average R-factor in the longitudinal direction is obtained as 2.92 which is close to the specified R-factor in the bridge design codes (i.e., 3), and in the transverse direction is obtained as 2.41 which is about half of the corresponding R-factor value in the specifications (i.e., 5).

  • Support vector quantile regression (SVQR) is capable of providing more complete description of the linear and nonlinear relationships among response and input variables. In this paper we propose a weighted SVQR for the longitudinal data. Furthermore, we introduce the generalized approximate cross validation function to select the hyperparameters which affect the performance of SVQR. Experimental results are the presented, which illustrate the performance of the proposed SVQR.

  • Colloidal particles consisted of individual nanosized magnetite grains on the surface of the silica cores were obtained by two-stage sol-gel technique. Size distribution and microstructure of the particles were analyzed using atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Nitrogen thermal desorption. Magnetic properties of the particles were studied by the method of the longitudinal nonlinear response. It has been shown that nanoparticles of magnetite have a size corresponding to a superparamagnetic state but exhibit hysteresis properties. The phenomenon was explained using the magnetostatic interaction model based on the hypothesis of iron oxide particles cluster aggregation on the silica surface.

  • An estimating procedure is introduced for the nonlinear mixed-effect Poisson regression, for longitudinal study, where data from different subjects are independent whereas data from same subject are correlated. The proposed procedure provides the estimates of the mean function of the response variables, where the canonical parameter is related to the input vector in a nonlinear form. The generalized cross validation function is introduced to choose optimal hyper-parameters in the procedure. Experimental results are then presented, which indicate the performance of the proposed estimating procedure.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear free and forced vibration responses of sandwich nano-beams with three various functionally graded (FG) patterns of reinforced carbon nanotubes (CNTs) face-sheets are investigated. The sandwich nano-beam is resting on nonlinear Visco-elastic foundation and is subjected to thermal and electrical loads. The nonlinear governing equations of motion are derived for an Euler-Bernoulli beam based on Hamilton principle and von Karman nonlinear relation. To analyze nonlinear vibration, Galerkin's decomposition technique is employed to convert the governing partial differential equation (PDE) to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE). Furthermore, the Multiple Times Scale (MTS) method is employed to find approximate solution for the nonlinear time, frequency and forced responses of the sandwich nano-beam. Comparison between results of this paper and previous published paper shows that our numerical results are in good agreement with literature. In addition, the nonlinear frequency, force response and nonlinear damping time response is carefully studied. The influences of important parameters such as nonlocal parameter, volume fraction of the CNTs, different patterns of CNTs, length scale parameter, Visco-Pasternak foundation parameter, applied voltage, longitudinal magnetic field and temperature change are investigated on the various responses. One can conclude that frequency of FG-AV pattern is greater than other used patterns.

In recent, perpendicular recording has received much attention as promising technology for future high-density recording system Research into signal processing techniques is paramount for the issued storage system and is indispensable like longitudinal recording systems. This paper focuses on the performance evaluation of the various detectors under perpendicular recording system. Parameters for improving the their performance are examined for some detectors. Detectors considered in this work are the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML), noise-predictive maximum likelihood (NPML), fixed delay tree search with decision feedback (FDTS/DF), dual decision feedback equalizer (DDFE) and multilevel decision feedback equalizer (MDFE). Their performances are analyzed in terms of mean squared error (MSE) and noise power spectra, and similarity between recording channel and partial response (PR) channel.

  • This paper studies the response of seismic behavior of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints under reversal loading with different anchorages and joint core details. The joint core was detailed without much confinement (group-I) and/or with proposed X-cross bars in the core (group-II). The beam longitudinal reinforcement's anchorages were designed as per ACI 352 (headed bars), ACI 318 (conventional $90^{\circ}$ bent hooks) and IS 456 ($90^{\circ}$ bent hooks with extended tails). The nonlinear finite element analysis response of the beam-column joints was studied, along with initial and progressive cracks up to failure. The experimental and analytical results were compared and presented in this paper to make more scientific conclusions.
