  • This study examined the relationship between parenting, the quality of peer relationships, and loneliness in adolescents. This study also examined the mediating effects of the quality of peer relationships on the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness. A total of 506 1st and 2nd grade middle school students (261 boys and 245 girls) from the Seoul Metropolitan area completed measures of parenting, the quality of their peer relationships, and loneliness. The results indicated that adolescents' perceptions of parenting and the quality of their peer relationships were significantly related to their feelings of loneliness. Specifically, adolescents' perceptions of low levels of parental monitoring and high levels of abusive and neglectful parenting were associated with high levels of loneliness. Adolescents who perceived the quality of their peer relationships to be low reported high levels of loneliness. Further, the quality of peer relationships mediated the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness; however, the pattern of associations differed for boys and girls. These findings suggest that both parent and peer relationship factors should be considered in combination in order to better explain loneliness in adolescents.

  • The relations between family functioning (cohesion, conflicts, family sociability, and democratic family style) and self-esteem and loneliness in adolescents were examined in a sample of 485 2nd-grade high school students (256 boys and 229 girls). Data were collected using three questionnaires on the loneliness, family functioning, and self-esteem of adolescents. Family functioning and self-esteem were significantly related to loneliness both in adolescent boys and girls. Adolescents experienced less loneliness when family cohesion and sociability were higher, conflicts were lower, the family style was more democratic, and self-esteem was higher. Family functioning was also related to self-esteem. The more functional the family, the higher the self-esteem of adolescents. Self-esteem played a partly mediating role in the relation between family functioning and loneliness only for boys. This emphasizes the influential role of self-esteem on loneliness.

From the research results significantly different factors of family system, consisting of family differentiation, family flexibility, boundary between parents and male adolescents, conflict resolved in parents, and male adolescents' cohesion with mother and father, explained each aspect of male adolescents' loneliness including lack of intimacy, social relationship network, and belonging according to their school types. The boundary between parents and male adolescents was a critical factor explaining the lack of intimacy of male adolescents in a juvenile detention center, and family flexibility was a congruous factor having an impact on the lack of belonging of male adolescents both in the juvenile detention center and public schools.

Social support factors existing in an adolescent's external environment include the support of parents, peers, and teachers. And life satisfaction as a psychological characteristic was concerned with the adolescent's sense of self, school life, home environment, and family relations. Data were analyzed by using the t-test, Pearson's correlation and regression. Major findings were as follows: (1) There were significant differences in parent and teacher support, satisfaction with school life, home environment, and family relations between early adolescents and mid adolescents. (2) Parental, peer, and teacher support, contentment with oneself, school life, home environment, and family relations were negatively related to the fifth-grade early adolescent's loneliness. • This study examined the mediation effect of life satisfaction between aggression and loneliness. The subjects were two hundred and eighty fifth-year elementary school and second-year middle school adolescents in Seoul. Data were analyzed by using the t-test, Pearson's correlation and regression. Major findings were as follows: First, when it comes to aggressiveness, the fifth graders showed a significantly higher degree of personal attack, whereas the eighth graders were found to show more expression of anger. The fifth graders scored higher than the eighth graders in each subcategory of life satisfaction. No significant difference was found in the category of loneliness. Second, the fifth graders showed a positive relationship among verbal attack, personal attach, expression of anger and loneliness, whereas the eighth graders showed a positive relationship between expression of anger and loneliness. The two age groups, in turn, also exhibited some differences in the relationship between loneliness and life satisfaction. Third, we found that life satisfaction is a complete parameter between aggressiveness and loneliness in the fifth graders. In the case of the eighth graders, life satisfaction turned out to be a partial parameter between aggressiveness and loneliness. This perhaps indicates that adolescents with similar levels of aggressiveness might show different degrees of loneliness, depending on whether they have positive attitudes toward their lives and whether they feel satisfied with their lives.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of loneliness on habitual drug use in Korean adolescents. Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional study. Using statistics from the 16th (2020) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted. A total 54,948 adolescents were included in the analysis. Results: Adolescents were more likely to engage in habitual drug use when they were lonely than when they were not (OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.20~2.02). As for sociodemographic characteristics, gender, academic achievement, and living with family were factors influencing habitual drug use. As for health behavior characteristics, perceived stress, depression, current drinking, violence, sexual intercourse, and perceived health were identified as factors affecting habitual drug use. Conclusion: Provision of education that includes loneliness as a factor, which was not previously considered important in school education for preventing habitual drug use of adolescents, should be considered.
