Damage identification of belt conveyor support structure using periodic and isolated local vibration modes

  • Due to corrosion, a large number of belt conveyors support structure in industrial plants have deteriorated. Severe corrosion may result in collapse of the structures. Therefore, practical and effective structural assessment techniques are needed. In this paper, damage identification methods based on two specific local vibration modes, named periodic and isolated local vibration modes, are proposed. The identification methods utilize the facts that support structures have many identical members repeated along the belt conveyor and there exist some local modes within a small frequency range where vibrations of these identical members are much larger than those of the other members. When one of these identical members is damaged, this member no longer vibrates in those modes. Instead, the member vibrates alone in an isolated mode with a lower frequency. A damage identification method based on frequencies comparison of these vibration modes and another method based on amplitude comparison of the periodic local vibration mode are explained. These methods do not require the baseline measurement records of undamaged structure. The methods is capable of detecting multiple damages simultaneously. The applicability of the methods is experimentally validated with a laboratory model and a real belt-conveyor support structure.

Local and Normal Modes of OH Stretching Vibration in Hydrogen-Bonded Water Molecules (수소 결합한 물 분자에서 OH 신축 진동의 국소모드와 정규모드)

  • The validity of the calculation method based on the local mode in hydrogen-bonded water molecules was investigated by comparing the frequencies of the local and normal modes of OH stretching vibration in water molecules. By calculating a monomer, dimer, and trimer of water molecules using a quantum chemical ab initio theory, we examined how the frequencies of the local and normal modes and the anharmonicity of local modes vary with molecular cluster size. It was shown that, as the number of molecules increases from monomer to trimer, the anharmonicity of OH bonds increases and the difference between local and normal mode frequencies decreases. This confirms that local-mode-based calculations that can easily handle the anharmonicity can be appropriate for the calculation of the OH stretching frequency of water molecules in the condensed phase.

  • An analytical method is presented for predicting the effect of a local deviation in the form of a concentrated mass along a radial line on the free bending vibration characteristics of a nearly axisymmetric circular plate. The approach is based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method and the expression of local deviation of the concentrated radial mass as the variation of heaviside unit step function. The effects of the concentrated mass on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the plate are predicted with a proposed nondimensional mass parameter.

  • Many vibration-based global damage detection methods attempt to extract modal parameters from vibration signals as the main structural features to detect damage. The local flexibility method is one promising method that requires only the first few fundamental modes to detect not only the location but also the extent of damage. Generally, the mode shapes in the lateral degree of freedom are extracted from lateral vibration signals and then used to detect damage for a beam structure. In this study, a new approach which employs the mode shapes in the rotary degree of freedom obtained from the macro-strain vibration signals to detect damage of a beam structure is proposed. In order to facilitate the application of mode shapes in the rotary degree of freedom for beam structures, the local flexibility method is modified and utilized. The proposed rotary approach is verified by numerical and experimental studies of simply supported beams. The results illustrate potential feasibility of the proposed new idea. Compared to the method that uses lateral measurements, the proposed rotary approach seems more robust to noise in the numerical cases considered. The sensor configuration could also be more flexible and customized for a beam structure. Primarily, the proposed approach seems more sensitive to damage when the damage is close to the supports of simply supported beams.

  • The mode localization phenomenon in non-periodic multispan beam is theoretically investigated. When localization occurs, the free vibration amplitude of a normal mode becomes confined to a local region of the structure. It is well known that the weakly coupled periodic structures are sensitive to certain types of periodicity-breaking disorder, resulting in the mode localization. The results of this study indicate that the mode localization occurs also in nonperiodic structures and the degrees of mode localization of some modes are very sensitive to system parameters. Free vibration analysis of simply supported two-span beams of arbitrary span lengths is performed. Degrees of mode localization and their sensitivities to system parameters are appraised by considering the characteristic graph and the structural line defined in this study first.

  • Damage detection methods using vibration modes are investigated on ring structures and. modal behavior of the slightly asymmetric rings is examined. Mode shapes changes, MSER(modal strain energy ratio) and MCR(modal curvature ratio) are applied to identify the locations of faults or damages. Parameters are calculated and compared by finite element analysis on rings with designed local damages. Damages are modeled as reduced stiffness in the analysis. The results show MSER and MCR can be proper factors to detect local damages in ring structures.

  • This article studies the free and forced vibrations of the carbon nanotubes CNTs embedded in an elastic medium including thermal and dynamic load effects based on nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam. A Winkler type elastic foundation is employed to model the interaction of carbon nanotube and the surrounding elastic medium. Influence of all parameters such as nonlocal small-scale effects, high temperature change, Winkler modulus parameter, vibration mode and aspect ratio of short carbon nanotubes on the vibration frequency are analyzed and discussed. The non-local Euler-Bernoulli beam model predicts lower resonance frequencies. The research work reveals the significance of the small-scale coefficient, the vibrational mode number, the elastic medium and the temperature change on the non-dimensional natural frequency.

  • To understand the concept of dynamic motion in two degree nonlinear coupled system, free vibration not including damping and excitation is investigated with the concept of nonlinear normal mode. Stability analysis of a coupled system is conducted, and the theoretical analysis performed for the bifurcation phenomenon in the system. Bifurcation point is estimated using harmonic balance method. When the bifurcation occurs, the saddle point is always found on Poincare's map. Nonlinear phenomenon result in amplitude modulation near the saddle point and the internal resonance in the system making continuous interchange of energy. If the bifurcation in the normal mode is local, the motion remains stable for a long time even when the total energy is increased in the system. On the other hand, if the bifurcation is global, the motion in the normal mode disappears into the chaos range as the range becomes gradually large.

  • Diesel power plants are frequently used as a power supplier on the island and the isolated places where electric power is required. The heat efficiency of the low speed 2 stroke diesel engines is higher than those of 4 stroke diesel engines or other heat engines and further its mobility and durability is also better than other engines. They can be also easily repaired and maintained. With these advantages, demand for the use of the low speed 2 stroke diesel engine as a power source is increasing. However, there are some disadvantages with these diesel engines such as the bigger vibrating excitation forces generated by higher combustion pressure in cylinder and by the inertia force of the reciprocating parts. Further, engine vibrations are transfered into their adjacent buildings and manufacturing factories and eventually produces local vibrations. In order to reduce X-mode vibration of engine body, several methods have been introduced in the recent researches. In this paper, accordingly, a new vibrationcontrol method applying a synchrophaser and a top bracing between two diesel engines is adopted in order to reduce these structural vibrations of diesel power plant. It was experimentally verified that the structural vibrations were greatly reduced by the phase adjustment for the 6th order X-mode vibration with the synchrophaser and the top bracing.

A Study on the Control of the Beat Clarity and the Beat Period in a Ring Structure (링 구조물의 맥놀이의 선명도와 맥놀이 주기 조절에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we propose a new method to control both the beat clarity and beat period in a ring structure. An equivalent ring which satisfies the measured mode condition is determined by using the equivalent ring theory. Theoretical analysis and finite element analysis on the equivalent ring are performed to investigate the effect of the local structural modification on the beat clarity and beat period. Beat clarity and period are improved by attaching asymmetric mass or decreasing local thickness. Through the analysis on the equivalent ring, the proper position and the amount of the local variation are determined to satisfy the required clarity and period condition. All the analysis results are compared and verified by the experiment.
