Purpose: This study was aimed to identify factors related with depression among boys and girls in Korean middle school adolescents. Methods: This study used the data from the 2007 annual survey of youth health behaviors conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between the period of 2007/9/1 and 2007/9/22 (with the extension of 2007/10/1 and 2007/11/3). The target number of this study was 21,047 male and 18,424 female students all in the age group of middle school 1st grade and 3rd grade. Results: Depression of middle school adolescents was 33.4% for male students, 43.8% for female students, 38.3% in overall. With regard to the relationship between the demographic characteristics and the health behavior, both male and female students felt more depressed when they had more stress, followed by the cases with stimulant intakes and chronic diseases. For male students, higher level of physical activity was associated with greater level of the depression. For female students, living with only one parent or other person seem to cause more depression. Conclusion: Depression of middle school adolescents requires a special attention from the family, the school and society in general to find out and eliminate the root of these symptoms.
Background: Gastritis and gastric cancer are the most common diseases in the Kazakh population. Polymorphisms in genes coding of cytokines have been played important role with gastric disease risk. The risk alleles of cytokines in patients with gastritis can predict the risk of developing gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate cytokine gene polymorphisms as risk factors for the development of gastritis in a case-control study with gastritis patients and healthy individuals from the Kazakh ethnic group, living in North Kazakhstan. Materials and Methods: The polymerase chain reaction followed by direct sequencing were used for detection of two functional polymorphisms in the IL1 gene family, and TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assay Sets were applied for three potentially functional polymorphisms in the IL10 gene, and one in the TNFA promoter. Results: Association analysis of studied allelic variants and the development of gastritis in H. pylori-positive patients showed that IL1B -31C/C, IL1B -511T/T and IL1RN -2/2 allelic variants were associated with development of gastritis (OR=1.8 (1.07-3.16), p=0.025; OR=1.7 (1.04-2.99), p=0.035, and OR=4.92 (2.45-9.85), p<0.001) respectively. Haplotype C-Т that combines both homozygous allelic variants of IL1B gene also had a statistically significant association with slightly higher OR (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.08-1.88). Conclusions: The data from the current study showed that the genotype IL-1B -511Т/-31C-IL1-RN-2 and H. pylori infection increase risk of gastritis in the Kazakh population. That genotype combination might be a factor increasing the risk of developing gastric cancer.
This study was conducted to develop the unique native local foods of Namwon and to provide basic data needed to reinvigoratethe tourist industry and local economy. Perception and satisfaction with native local foods of Namwon were surveyed in 483 tourists (246 men and 237 women 53% visiting Namwon for the first time). Of the participants, 41.2% did not stay or eat in Namwon. Most tourists visited with other family members and spent approximately 20,000 won per capita on food. Of the foods sampled for the first time, preferred foods were (in order of preference and intention to order again) Chueo-tang, Hanjeongsik, wild edible greens-jeongsik, and black pork. The degree of food satisfaction was relatively favorable (3.54${\pm}$0.08 points on a 5-point satisfaction scale), with taste being the most important factor affecting the degree of satisfaction for 92.9% of the subjects. However, willingness to revisit Namwon on the basis of the local foods was not as high as the degree of satisfaction with the foods. Insufficient information and publicity concerning Namwon local foods were cited as impediments, and suggested improvements included taste, sanitation and food-based tourism. The degree of satisfaction was higher in men than in women. Age, residence, and occupation were not related to the degree of satisfaction. But, the willingness to revisit Namwon to sample local foods was related with gender (men more willing) and occupation (public service personnel, business owners, salaried employees, professionals, and housewives more willing, in order). Women in general and housewives in particular were most critical in food assessment.

Objectives: To identify and evaluate the trend of meal-skipping rates among Korean adolescents with their contributing causes and the influence of household income level on meal skipping. Methods: Using 2008, 2010, and 2012 data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey of 222 662 students, a cross-sectional study with subgroup analysis was performed. We calculated odds ratios for skipping each meal 5 or more times in a week by household socio-economic status using a multiple logistic regression model. The secular change in the meal-skipping rates by the students' family affluence scale was analyzed by comparing the meal-skipping students within each subgroup and odds ratios for the same event over time. Results: Through 2008 to 2012, most of the meal-skipping rates generally showed a continuous increase or were almost unchanged in both sexes, except for breakfast skipping in several subgroups. Students in low-income households not living with both parents had the highest meal-skipping rates and odds ratios for frequent meal skipping. In a time-series subgroup analysis, the overall odds ratios for the same event increased during 2008 to 2012, with a slight reduction in the gap between low and higher income levels with regard to meal skipping during 2010 to 2012. Conclusions: Household socio-economic status and several other factors had a significant influence on Korean adolescent meal-skipping rates. Although the gap in eating behavior associated with household socio-economic differences is currently decreasing, further study and appropriate interventions are needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the process of life adaptation in women with cervical cancer. Method: A grounded theory method with guided data collection and analysis was used. Fifteen women with cervical cancer who had some kind of treatment at the hospital were asked open-ended and descriptive questions with a guideline. All interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Result: The core category that emerged from the comparative analysis was "overcoming cancer" named as a process of life adaptation in the participants. The process of overcoming cancer evolved three stages - "admitting reality", "attempting health-care" and "continuing health-care". Depending on the paradigm model, the central phenomena of the experiences was "powerlessness". The internal factors motivating women to overcome cancer were "denial of cancer" and "desire for life". Strategies of overcoming cancer included "living as a cancer patient," "selective food eating," "steady exercising," "getting rid of stress," and "preparing for death". The intervening conditions, "supportive system," "forms of life," and "burden on family," influenced overcoming cancer. Conclusion: The results of this study could help clinical nurses to understand life adaptation in cervical cancer patients and establish efficient coping strategies in dealing with the problems they face.
The purpose of this study was to define and clarify the concept of Shared decision-making (SDM) in patients with chronic disease. Walker and Avant's concept analysis process was used to analyze interdisciplinary convergence in SDM. SDM in patients with chronic disease can be defined by the following attributes: acknowledgment patients as 'self-care experts', the rights of self-determination, reversible negotiation, and patient-centered care. The antecedents of SMD consisted of situations where there is a need to make a decision from several treatment options of similar efficacy, decisional conflict, patient, family, and health provider's willingness to participate in the decision-making process, enough time and opportunity for SDM. The consequences occurring as a result of SMD were decrease decisional conflict, improvement health outcome, satisfaction, quality of life, enhancement self-management and self-efficacy with long-term, and living acceptably with the illness. Based on these results, a scale measuring SDM in patients with chronic disease is needed.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among co-parenting, maternal parenting stress, and preschoolers' anxiety and hyperactivity with a sample of 155 mothers with 3 to 4 year old children (83 boys and 72 girls) living in Seoul. They completed a questionnaire on co-parenting, maternal parenting stress, and preschoolers' anxiety and hyperactivity. The results were analyzed by means of correlations and regressions. Co-parenting was positively correlated with preschoolers' anxiety and hyperactivity but affectionate, integrated co-parenting was negatively correlated with preschoolers' anxiety and hyperactivity. Maternal stress of parental suffering, dysfunctional interaction, and difficult temperament were positively related to preschoolers' anxiety and hyperactivity. Conflicting co-parenting was positively correlated with maternal stress of parental suffering, but affectionate and integrated co-parenting was negatively correlated with maternal stress of parental suffering and difficult temperament. Furthermore, maternal parenting stress mediated the relationship between co-parenting and preschoolers' anxiety and hyperactivity. Especially, maternal stress of parental suffering tended to play a perfectly mediating role between conflicting and integrated co-parenting and preschoolers' anxiety, between conflicting co-parenting and preschoolers' hyperactivity. Maternal stress of difficult temperament tended to play a perfectly mediating role between integrated co-parenting and preschoolers' anxiety and between conflicting co-parenting and preschoolers' hyperactivity. These results clearly indicate that maternal parenting stress plays a crucial role in the levels of preschoolers' anxiety and hyperactivity.
Hospice can not only help the dying persons to maintain the high quality of life and facing the death in comfortable and peaceful state, but also the bereaved family to relieve the grief and sufferings. We investigated the work of hospice performed by church base from March 2000 until recently and reported the results dividing them into three parts. 1)The application of resources in church to administration, education, nursing delivery of hospice in the aspects of management. 2)Spiritual and postmortal management relating hospice nursing and funeral in hospice practice. 3)Case report of hospice and the patients situation(5 in average a month). The expected effects of hospice practice using the resources in church are as follows. 1)Hospice practice can provide the highly qualified persons with the opportunities to do voluntary services and find their lives worth living. Consequently hospice contributes to the spreading of the volunteering culture. 2)The volunteers in hospice can grow mature spiritually and get interpersonal relationships among the volunteers. Doyle. D., Geoflrey.W.C., & Macdonald. N.(1988). Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine(2nd ed). New York :Oxford University Press. Woodruff. R.(1996). Palliative Medicine(2nd ed). Melburn: Asperula Pty Ltd. 3)Through the hospice activity, church can practice and show the moral. 4)The volunteers in hospice can make a organization with a hope to be a beautiful community in church. 5)The patients and their families can enjoy the high quality of life through the holistic care provided by 33 nursing practical items of hospice. 6)'Hospice newsletter' can be a useful vehicle to provide readers with hope and encouragement through the stories of the patient and the volunteers. The persons unaware of the hospice can be contacted with hospice by this 'Hospice newsletter'. 7)Irrespective of the economic status, all patients are served equally that hospice can contribute to dying with dignity and the equality of human being.
This study analysed marital comflicts, related factors, and adjustments to those conflicts described by urban Korean women. The purpose was to discover directions for resolution that would enhance the helpfulness of volunteers or prfessionals working with women in counselling settings. The investigator interviewed 20 married women, all mothers and housewives living in Seoul, attending marriage encounter programs and the Lifeline telephone counselling service. An interview schedule using six open-ended questiona guided the data colleciton which took place between May 31 and December 29, 1988. Content analysis of the data revealed, in order of reported frequency, the following areas of conflict: relationships between husband wife, relationships with children, relationships between the wife and her mother-in-Law, unsatisfied sexual needs, the husband's extra marital relationships, lack of self actualization and finacial matters. Analysis of the data suggested the following factors were related to the conflicts: reasons for marriage, traditional views about marriage and divorce including to accept a marriage arranged by the parents, the husband's traditonal attitude toward the sex role of the wife, the husband's patriarchical authoritarianism, and his attitude toward the wife;s empolyment outside the home. The women thought these conflicts severely affected their relationships within the famaily, particularly with their children. Literature suggests links with such poor parent-child-family relationships and adolescent or young people's social problems. Volunteers or professionals working with married women in counselling situation need to be conscious of the possibility of these conflict during assessment, and direct their guidance toward such conflict resolution. The researcher makes several suggestions which include the need for the husband to give emotional supports to his wife, to recognize the worth of housework, to share the work of the home, to fine ways to enhance the wife's self-actualization and to ease dreary housework routines by prviding modern appliances.
The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the solution of occupant problems related to the house purchasing. For the purpose, the content of problems and actual conditions of house purchasing are examined. Also the structural analysis of occupant's evaluation of housing purchasing is executed. For these purposes, a survey was conducted using questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted from 263 house owners in Seoul. Major findings of this study can be summarized as follows ; 1) The frequency and the contend of occupation's problems with house purchasing are studied. The rate of housing problem occurrence is 71.2%, so the majority of respondents experience problems. The most common problems are the difference from supplier's description(53.2%). The rate of housing problems occurrence is qenerally high with the houses of mult-housedhold houses and mult-family houses type. 2) There is a significant difference in housing satisfaction extend according to the existence of an housing problem experience. Therefore, it can be inferred that experience of housing problem has an important effects upon the housing satasfaction extent. 3) Occupants' countermoves to the housing problems are examined. Occupants make active regotiation with house suppliers only on the direct damages such as an economical loss or a living difficulty. However, they usually make no countermove at all on the other indirect troubles. House suppliers make correction only when occupants' countermove actively, but refuse to do when occupant's reactions are not active. 4) As a means of countermove, most occupants depend on direct personal regotiation with house suppliers. The rate of using a specialist or public and private consultant is extremely low. 5) Problems with house purchasing and the countermove process of both occupant and house supplier are displayed in the figure(Fig. 4-4).
