Also, their literacy practices at home and in the classroom were compared and how their literacy beliefs and practices were related was investigated. 176 mothers and 72 daycare teachers participated in this study in Kyunggi-do. Mean, standard deviation, frequency, t-test, and multiple regression were employed to analyze the data. The results showed that the mothers' age, mothers' education, fathers' education and family income mostly predict the mothers' literacy beliefs. Also the teachers' age, education, and their learning experiences with the whole language approach are the main predicting variables in the teachers' beliefs. In practices, the mothers' age, number of children, and fathers' education are independent variables predicting the mothers' practices. The teachers' age, education, interest about the whole language approach, learning experience, and number of children in the classroom are independent variables into the teachers' practices. Overall, teachers showed a higher level of beliefs on the whole language approach and did more literacy practices than the mothers.

The instrument used for this study measured mothers' beliefs toward the whole language approach against the traditional approaches in children's literacy development. The total number of 340 mothers participated in this study who are sending their children to daycare centers of kindergartens in Seoul and its suburban area. Mean, Standard Deviation, frequency, Spearman's rho, and Kendall's tau were employed to analyze the data. The results showed that mothers' beliefs on the whole language approach have relationships with their home literacy practices, and their demographic characteristics - such as mothers' education, their spouses' education, and income - were also related with mothers' beliefs. The results of this study explore the inter-relationship of mothers' beliefs with home literacy practices, and also the importance of mothers' belief system on children's literacy learning at home.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of father's socio-demographic variables and father's literacy beliefs on father's literacy interaction. Participants were 204 fathers who have children in 3 to 5 years of age. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The findings are summarized as follows: (1) Father's education level was generally correlated with 'father role efficiency', 'open interaction', 'picture-book reading interaction' (2) Monthly income of the household was related 'father role efficiency', 'positive feelings on reading books'. (3) 'Literacy ability development from books', 'father role efficiency', 'positive feeling on reading books' were correlated 'open interaction' and 'picture book reading'. But, 'literacy ability development from books', 'father role efficiency', 'positive feeling on reading books' were negatively correlated 'direct interaction'. (4) The most influential factor on father's 'open interaction', 'direct interaction' was 'literacy ability development from books'. The most influential factor on father's 'picture-book reading' was 'positive feeling on reading books'. These findings highlight that 'literacy ability development from books' and 'positive feeling on reading books' may play critical roles in father's literacy interaction. So, it is very important that adequate training and support on father's literacy beliefs for father's high quality literacy interaction.

Questionnaires from 378 5-year-olds' mothers in Seoul and Kyunggi province were analysed. The findings from the validated structural equation model constructed with these variables were as follows. First, the home literacy environment, the mother's literacy beliefs and the mother's general parenting efficacy affected the quantity, and the quality of interaction whilst reading books with preschoolers. Second, the mother's efficacy in education and communication had a direct impact on the quantity of the interaction during reading books through the mediation of the home literacy environment, and had an indirect effect on the quality of the interaction whilst reading books, respectively. Third, the mother's efficacy in communication directly accounted for the quality of the interaction which occurs whilst reading books with children.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills in terms of maternal language behavior in Korean and English picture book reading. This study was also conducted in order to identify the pathways of each factor. The subjects consisted of 201 mothers and their 3~5 year-old children from middle income families living in Seoul, Incheon, Gyyounggi-do, and Chungcheongbuk-do. The results indicated that the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills acquisition were as follows : maternal beliefs about the value of picture book reading, the child's level of interest in picture book reading, the time spent on picture book reading and maternal language behavior during picture book reading activities. The results further indicate that it is important that the mother shares desirable language interaction with her children in their native language while reading not only Korean but also English picture books when aiming to improve preschoolers' emergent English literacy skills.

  • Smart healthcare, combining ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) and medical technologies, has been rapidly emerging. Accordingly, its market has also increased as interest in disease prevention, management, and diagnosis grows due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, using mobile devices to support medical activities, mobile healthcare has been attracting attention as a leading service in the smart healthcare market. However, the intention to use mobile healthcare apps may vary depending on individual beliefs and attitudes. Many studies on the intention to use mobile healthcare apps have used the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model), but there is a lack of studies that have been verified from the perspective of users' health beliefs. This study aims to identify the factors that affect the intention to use mobile healthcare apps based on the HBM (Health Belief Model). Furthermore, it investigates how this influencing mechanism fluctuates based on the user's mHealth literacy, the ability to find and understand health information through mobile. This study contributes to the empirical examination of the intention to use mobile healthcare apps through the HBM. It also offers insights for app providers and public health officials to increase the use of mobile healthcare apps.

  • This study was designed to compare mothers' beliefs of literacy development and home literacy environment and to explore how the children interacted with their mother during literacy activities and how they used the strategies to develop knowledge of literacy. The qualitative data was collected from multiple sources of naturalistic information and analyzed through triangulation of diverse methods including participant observations in the home, parental during literacy events, written logs kept by the mothers, the children's writing products, three emergent assessment forms, and photographs. The three preschoolers and their mothers provided different literacy experiences to support their children's emerging conventional literacy development. Child 1's mother highly valued the rich home literacy environment and the child 1's initiative interactions during literacy events. Child 3's home literacy context was very similar to her Montessori classroom's phonic approach and writing skills. Child 2 was provided with an inappropriate literacy environment at home through direct instruction and an emphasis on correct writing. All of the children were interested and attended to story. Child 1 interacted with her mother in expanded cycles as child's initiation, mother's clarification, and child's evaluation, compared with the child 2's simple cycle and the child 3's classroom-like cycle as mother's initiation, child's response, and mother's evaluation. The children and their mothers employed a number of diverse strategies to understand knowledge of literacy. Importantly parent education needs to emphasize the importance of playful one to one mother-child interaction, a functional holistic literacy environment., and strategies for expanding child's knowledge with parent as mediator.
