  • Application of linear electric motors to automation of manufacturing processes, gantry robots, machining processes, machining centers, additive manufacturing and laser scribing has been discussed. The paper focuses on replacement of ball lead screw mechanisms with linear electric motors, linear motor driven positioning stages, linear motor driven gantries, machining centers, machining of large objects and industrial lasers. The best linear electric motors for application to machining processes are permanent magnet (PM) linear synchronous motors (LSMs), especially those without PMs in the reaction tail, e.g., high thrust density linear (HDL) LSMs and PM flux switching (FS) LSMs.

  • This paper is concerned with distributed fusion moving average prediction for continuous-time linear stochastic systems with multiple sensors. A distributed fusion with the weighted sum structure is applied to the optimal local moving average predictors. The distributed fusion prediction algorithm represents the optimal linear fusion by weighting matrices under the minimum mean square criterion. The derivation of equations for error cross-covariances between the local predictors is the key of this paper. Example demonstrates effectiveness of the distributed fusion moving average predictor.

  • In this paper, we develope a composite control law for linear systems with norm-bounded time-varying parameter uncertainties, which consists of a basic linear robust control do-signed so as to generate a desired transient time-response for the worst-case parameter variation and a nonlinear modification term designed so as to reduce cautiousness of the linear robust control in an adaptive manner. The proposed controller is established such that the reduction of cautiousness of the linear robust control is well incorporated into the achievement of a good transient behavior.

  • Numerous software vulnerabilities have been found in the popular operating systems. And recently, robust linear behaviors in software vulnerability discovery process have been noticeably observed among the many popular systems having multi-versions released. Software users need to estimate how much their software systems are risk enough so that they need to take an action before it is too late. Security vulnerabilities are discovered throughout the life of a software system by both the developers, and normal end-users. So far there have been several vulnerability discovery models are proposed to describe the vulnerability discovery pattern for determining readiness for patch release, optimal resource allocations or evaluating the risk of vulnerability exploitation. Here, we apply a linear vulnerability discovery model into Windows operating systems to see the linear discovery trends currently observed often. The applicability of the observation form the paper show that linear discovery model fits very well with aggregate version rather than each version.

  • Sliding mode control (SMC) is an effective method of controlling systems with uncertainties which satisfy the so-called matching condition. However, how to effectively handle mismatched uncertainties of systems is still an ongoing research issue in SMC. Several methods have been proposed to design a stable sliding surface even if mismatched uncertainties exist in a system. Especially, it is presented that robustness and efficiency of SMC for linear systems with mismatched uncertainties can be improved by reducing mismatched uncertainties in the reduced-order system. The reduction method needs a new sliding surface with an additional component based on Lyapunov redesign technique. In this paper, a stable sliding surface which contains additional component to reduce the influence of mismatched uncertainties, is introduced. It is designed by using linear matrix inequalities that guarantees the stability of the system. A numerical example demonstrates the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel stability criterion for switched linear systems. The proposed method employs the results on the upper bound of the solution of LME(Lyapunov Matrix Equation) and on the stability of hybrid system. The former guarantees the existence of Lyapunov-like energy functions and the latter shows that the stability of switched linear systems by using these energy functions. The proposed criterion releases the restriction on the stability of switched linear systems comparing with the existing methods and provides us with easy implementation way for pole assignment.

  • We consider the problem of designing a static output feedback sliding mode control law for linear dynamical systems with mismatched uncertainties in the state matrix. We assume that an output dependent sliding surface guaranteeing the quadratic stability of the sliding mode dynamics is given, the reachability condition is not required to be satisfied globally, and the output feedback sliding mode control law complises both linear and discontinuous parts. We reduce the problem of designing the linear part of the sliding mode control law to a simple LMI problem which offers design flexibility for combining various useful convex design specifications. Our approach does not require state transformation and it can be applied to mismatched uncertain systems.
