  • In this study, based on the results from the sinusoidal base excitation analyses of a single degree of freedom system with a tuned mass damper (TMD), it is verified that optimal friction force can improve the performance of a TMD like a linear viscous damper which has been usually used in general TMD. The magnitude of the optimal friction increases with increasing mass ratio of the TMD and decreases with increasing structural damping. Particularly, it is observed that the optimized friction force gives better control performance than the optimized viscous damping of the TMD. However, because the performance of the TMD considerably deteriorates when the friction force increases over the optimal value, it is required to keep the friction force from exceeding the optimal value.

  • To prove the stability and the effectiveness of the robust non-linear friction control suggested and proved analytically in the previous paper, the describing function analysis is introduced. The instability of the Southward's nonlinear friction compensation for a digital position control and the improvement of phase margin of the robust nonlinear friction compensation are verified qualitatively through the describing function analysis. Those controls are applied to a single-axis digital servo driving experimental setup which has inherent stick-slip friction and experimental results confirm the results obtained in and the effectiveness of the robust nonlinear friction compensation for a digital position control.

  • Mechanical problems are basically three dimensional nonlinear dynamic problems, which makes it difficult to solve. The difficulties are tried to overcome by modeling, i.e., simplifications of the system with the assumptions or negligence of minute effects. However, the correctness or usefulness of the model should be verified through the comparison with experimental results, which is the process of physical understanding of the system. The understanding of physics of the system make it possible to design or operation of the system. The effects of clearance and friction are always difficult problems in mechanical system due to its nonlinearity. The nonlinearity comes from piecewise-linear characteristics of the stiffness and damping of the system. The modeling of piecewise-linearity and the experimental result are discussed in this paper for impact and friction oscillator and rotor rubbing problem, which is the combination of impact and friction problems.

  • The steady rotating flows in eccentric annulus has been studied by a numerical method based on the spectral collocation method. The inner cylinder has a constant angular velocity while the outer on e is stationary. Flow between eccentric cylinders is of considerable technical importance as it occurs in journal bearings. In the present work, the governing equations for laminar flow are expressed as Navier-Stokes equations, including the non-linear convection terms. The solutions were utilized i, estimate the effects of the nonlinear terms on the load acting on the rotating cylinder. Based on the half and the full Sommerfeld methods, the load on the rotating cylinder is evaluated with eccentricity, by integrating the pressure and skin friction around the cylinder. The attitude angle and Sommerfeld reciprocal are calculated from the load. Also, the torque on the rotating inner cylinder was calculated. considering the skin friction. The attitude angle and Sommerfeld reciprocal are decreased with eccentricity. Viscous damping coefficient due to the skin friction becomes larger with decreasing the annular space. It is found the non-linear effects of the convection terms on the flow and the load are important. especially on the attitude angle, for relatively wide annular configurations however, the effects on those are minor for very narrow annular ones.

  • Dynamical friction plays an important role in reducing angular momenta of objects in orbital motions. While astronomical objects usually follow curvilinear orbits, most previous studies focused on the linear-trajectory cases. Here, we present the gravitational wake due to, and dynamical friction on, a perturber moving on a circular orbit in a uniform gaseous medium using a semi-analytic method. The circular orbit causes the density wakes to bend along the orbit into asymmetric configurations, resulting in the drag forces in both opposite (azimuthal) and lateral (radial) directions to the perturber motion, although the latter does not contribute to the orbital decay much. For a subsonic perturber, the bending of a wake is only modest and the resulting drag force in the opposite direction is remarkably similar to the linear-trajectory counterpart. On the other hand, a supersonic perturber is able to overtake its own wake, possibly multiple times, creating a high-density trailing tail. Despite the dramatic changes in the wake morphologies, the azimuthal drag force is in surprisingly good agreement with the formulae of Ostriker for the linear-trajectory cases, provided $V_pt=2R_p,\;where\;V_p\;and\;R_p$ are the velocity and orbital radius of the perturber, respectively.

  • The purpose of the study is to find development of contact area, contact pressure and friction forces occurring at joints or connection areas inbetween structural members or mechanical parts. The problem has a pair of difficulties intrinsically; a constraint of displacement due to contact, and presence of work term by nonconservative friction force in the variational principle of the problem. Because of these difficulties, the variational principle remains in the form of inequality. It is resolved by penalty method and perturbation method making the inequality to an equality which is proper for computational purposes. A contact problem without friction is solved to find contact area and contact pressure, which are to be used as data for the analysis of the friction problem using perturbed variational principle. For numerical experiments, a Hertz problem, a rigid punch problem, and the latter one with friction effects are solved using $Q_2$-finite elements.
