  • The limiting load capacity of air foil thrust bearings at extremely high operating speeds is theoretically investigated. The limiting load capacity of a sector is shown to increase as the angular extent ${\beta}$ and the inlet film thickness $h_1$ of the bearing increase, while it decreases with an increase in the ramp ratio b and the compliance ${\alpha}$ of the bearing. But it is found that the angular extent of the bearing is not related to the total limiting load capacity of the $360^{\circ}$ thrust bearing.

  • Structural steel has been used as a primary materials to columns and beams since 1960's in Korea with an advantages of excellent of load-bearing capacity and design flexibility, and faster construction. However, if the steel columns made of structural steel exposed to fire the load-bearing capacity is going down steadily and finally reach to collapse. Therefore, building regulation requires fire resistance according to building occupation, scales. The fire resistance can be evaluated two categories. One is prescriptive method that is based on building regulation, specification and so on and the other is performance-based fire engineering method. The latter can be designed based on scientific and engineering consequences. The easiest evaluation way using the fire engineering design is comparing to the limiting temperature and maximum temperature calculated based on heat transfer theory. If the limiting temperature of a column exceeds the maximum temperature of it, the column can carry the load during the fire. Therefore, the database of limiting temperature is very essential for evaluation of column. In this paper, to build the database of column made of rectangular hollow sections 8 fire tests with loading were conducted and the relation between the limiting temperature and the applied loads showed in reverse proportion.

  • The risk of progressive collapse in steel framed buildings under fire conditions is gradually rising due to the increasing use of combustible materials. The fire resistance of such steel framed buildings is evaluated by fire tests. Recently, the application of performance based fire engineering makes it easier to evaluate the fire resistance owing to various engineering techniques and fire science. The fire resistance of steel structural members can be evaluated by the comparison of the limiting temperatures and maximum temperatures of structural steel members. The limiting temperature is derived at the moment that the failure of structural member results from the rise in temperature and the maximum temperature is calculated by using a heat transfer analysis. To obtain the limiting temperatures for structural steel of grades SS400 and SM490 in Korea, tensile strength tests of coupons at high temperature were conducted. The limiting temperatures obtained by the tensile coupon tests were compared with the limiting temperatures reported in the literature and the results of column fire tests under four types of loading with different load ratios. Simple limiting temperature formulas for SS400 and SM490 steel based on the fire tests of the tensile coupons are proposed. The limiting temperature predictions using the proposed formulas were proven to be conservative in comparison with those obtained from H-section and hollow section column fire tests.

  • This paper investigates the design using wind-moment method for semi-rigid un-braced steel frames bending on weak axis. A limiting sway method has been proposed to reduce the frame sway. Allowance for steel section optimization between moment of inertia on minor axis column and major axis beam was used in conjunction with slope-deflection analysis to derive equations for optimum design in the proposed method. A series of un-braced steel frames comprised of two, four, and six bays ranging in height of two and four storey were studied on minor axis framing. The frames were designed for minimum gravity load in conjunction with maximum wind load and vice-versa. The accuracy of the design equation was found to be in good agreement with linear elastic computer analysis up to second order analysis. The study concluded that the adoption of wind-moment method and the proposed limiting sway method for semi-rigid steel frame bending on weak axis should be restricted to low-rise frames not more than four storey.

  • The series connection-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two magnetically coupled circuits was suggested and its effectiveness through the analysis on the current limiting and recovery characteristics was described. The fault current limiting characteristics of the proposed SFCL as well as the load voltage sag compensating characteristics according to the winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the series connection-type SFCL were carried out. The series connection-type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag compensating operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault appears and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than that with the subtractive polarity winding.

  • This paper presents conservation of electrical energy in building with harmonics analysis and compensation which occur in electrical system. We use load controlling and management system in order to adjust load factor of system. The maximum demand limiting and controlling are used ,then the system can acquire the prediction and compare it to the maximum demand set point. The electrical signal analysis based on FFT technique. The harmonics are compensated by using harmonic filters. This system consists computer which works as controller, processor , analysis and database unit together with digital power meter in form of multidrop network through serial communication via RS-485.The load control system uses PLC to control load via serial communication RS-485. The A/D converter is used for sampling the electrical signals via parallel port of computer. The harmonic filters are controlled by a computer. The data of measurement such as voltage, current, power, power factor, total harmonic distortion, energy, etc., can be saved as database and analysis. The load factor is adjusted by limiting and controlling maximum demand. The load factor adjustment can reduce the cost of electric consumption and energy generation together with harmonics compensation in order to increase high efficiency of electrical system.

  • The mechanical behavior of the steel tube encased high-strength concrete (STHC) composite walls under constant axial load and cyclically increasing lateral load was studied. Conclusions are drawn based on experimental observations, grey evolutionary algorithm and finite element (FE) simulations. The use of steel tube wall panels improved the load capacity and ductility of the specimens. STHC composite walls withstand more load cycles and show more stable hysteresis performance than conventional high strength concrete (HSC) walls. After the maximum load, the bearing capacity of the STHC composite wall was gradually reduced, and the wall did not collapse under the influence of the steel pipe. For analysis of the bending capacity of STHC composite walls based on artificial intelligence tools, an analysis model is proposed that takes into account the limiting effect of steel pipes. The results of this model agree well with the test results, indicating that the model can be used to predict the bearing capacity of STHC composite walls. Based on a reasonable material constitutive model and the limiting effect of steel pipes, a finite element model of the STHC composite wall was created. The finite elements agree well with the experimental results in terms of hysteresis curve, load-deformation curve and peak load.

  • When the current of the superconducting element exceeds its critical current by the fault occurrence, the quench of the high-$T_C$ superconducting fault current limiter (HTSC) comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) occurs. Simultaneously, the magnetic flux in the iron core induces the voltage in each coil, which contributes to limit the fault current. In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL as well as the load voltage sag suppressing characteristics according to the flux-lock type SFCL's winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the flux-lock type SFCL were carried out. The flux-lock type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag suppressing operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault occurs and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding.

  • This study aimed to develop experiment-based limiting heights for interior, nonload-bearing, cold-formed steelwall panels sheathed with gypsum board and subjected to uniformly distributed lateral loadings. Th e limiting heightswere evaluated by their strength (for flexure, shear, and web crippling) and deflection. Limiting heights for deflectionlimits of L/360, L/240, and L/120 (where L is the height of the wall) were developed over the range of typical designpressures.
