Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shift work on occupational safety in various industrial sectors. The study analyzes the effects of shift work on the health of workers by considering factors such as the workplace environment and welfare. Methods: Focusing on the $4^{th}$ Korean Working Conditions Survey, this study used an ordinary least-square multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable was the annual frequency of injuries reported by workers. Independent variables were categorized as demographic, shift work, workplace environment, and welfare variables. The analysis was conducted on two levels: 1) Shift work and nonshift work groups were compared, and 2) Shift work was compared with fixed and rotating shifts. Results: For the entire group, age, a low level of education, work hours, and daily and dispatch work negatively impacted the frequency of injuries. Shift work was negatively affected by workplace environment and welfare factors. In the shift group, the frequency of injuries was lower than that of regular workers, and the higher the autonomy in the choice of work hours, the lower the frequency of injuries. Furthermore, shift workers in Korea have more extended work hours (49.25 h/week) than other workers (46.34 h/week). Conclusion: Overall, welfare factors such as workplace satisfaction and worke-life balance reduced the frequency of injuries. The effect of shift work was limited, but it was confirmed that shift worker autonomy could reduce the frequency of injuries.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish baseline data for the development of employment policies to improve the efficiency and stability of visiting healthcare services. It identifies factors affecting visiting nurses' intention-to-retention at healthcare centers in Seoul. Methods: This descriptive study investigated subjective health perception, job stress, professionalism, job satisfaction, and intention-to-retention of 269 nurses with more than one year of work experience as a visiting nurse. These factors were analyzed using t-tests, chi-square, partial correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The results indicate that satisfaction for professional status in job satisfaction, educational level, autonomy in professionalism, and visiting nursing career were significant factors that impacted the retention of visiting nurses. Conclusion: It is necessary to frame policies and provide support to enhance the satisfaction and autonomy for visiting nurse as a profession for the efficiency and stability of visiting healthcare services.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of job characteristics on emotional empowerment in visiting health personnel. Methods: Subjects were recruited in ten community health care centers in one directorial area. Data collection was done using a self-report questionnaire. Job characteristics of visiting healthcare personnel were measured using the questionnaire developed by Kang (2006), based on Hackman & Oldham (1975). Emotional empowerment was measured using the questionnaire developed by Kang (2006), based on Spreitzer (1995). Results: First, the score of job characteristics was revealed to be 3.51 points the task significance was high, and the feedback was low. Second, the level of emotional empowerment was revealed to be 3.78 points the meaning was high, and the impact was low. Third, the prediction power of job characteristics on emotional empowerment was 34% autonomy, task identity, and task significance were identified as statistically significant predictive factors. Conclusion: The job characteristics of visiting healthcare personnel are highly correlated with emotional empowerment. Autonomy, task identity, and task significance are predictive factors of emotional empowerment. These results can be used to develop more effective job planning for increasing organizational effectiveness in visiting healthcare personnel.
Objectives: An increase in the number of caregivers is necessary to provide services to the elderly, but more importantly, it is qualitative management for them. The purpose of this study was to identify occupational stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment and to explore the impact of occupational stress on job satisfaction and organizational commitment among caregivers employed in health service centers for the elderly. Methods: This descriptive survey was a cross-sectional correlational design of 118 caregivers. The questionnaire included occupational stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. Stepwise multiple regression was applied. Results: Job satisfaction and organization commitment of caregivers were found to be above the average. There was a high level of job stress due to lack of job autonomy, job demands, and inadequate compensation. It has been found that the inappropriate compensation, organization system, work culture, and lack of job autonomy affected job satisfaction of caregivers. The factors affecting organizational commitment were inadequate compensation, job insecurity, and work culture. Conclusions: Efforts should be made to assess and complement the appropriateness of compensation and work culture that are taken to relieve job stress to enhance the job satisfaction and organizational commitment of caregivers.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of job characteristics, career commitment, and the fitness relationship between the two variables on the nurses' job attitude(job involvement and job satisfaction). Data were collected using self-reporting questionnaire taken by 594 nurses working at eight university hospitals in Seoul and Chungbuk area. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha coefficients, multiple regression through SAS program. The results of the study were as follows : 1. Three dimensions(task significance, skill variety, autonomy) of five core job characteristics have positive influence on job involvement and only one dimension(autonomy) of five core job characteristics has positive influence on job satisfaction of nurses. 2. The level of career commitment have positive influence on both job involvement and job satisfaction of nurses. 3. There were significant differences between ${\lceil}$high job characteristics-high career commitment${\rfloor}$ groups and ${\lceil}$high job characteristics-low career commitment${\rfloor}$ groups for job involvement and job satisfaction in nursing organization.
An atrium space, unlike ordinary office rooms, accommodates variety of activities such as moving and resting of people and usually houses variety of vegitation to improve amenity and indoor environment. Many atrium buildings in Korea have been designed by considering the environmental criteria for human beings, not for the vegitation in the atrium space. Especially the daylighting designs are mostly focused on the required illuminances for various visual tasks of the occupants and glare controls. As a result, some atrium spaces do not provide sufficient light to the interior plants. Consequently, these atrium spaces require a high level of electric lighting to compensate the deficit of natural light for the photosynthesis of the vegitation. The purpose of this study was to suggest design guidelines for 4-sided atrium spaces having different well indices (WI), plan aspect ratio (PAR), and cardinal orientation. The findings from this study might be referenced by building designers when designing or selecting canopy systems by considering the daylight performances of the uncovered atrium spaces. In the study, the daylight performance was evaluated in terms of daylight autonomy (DA).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and test a predictive model on the male nurses' turnover intention. Methods: This study utilized the model-testing design based on the Price's causal model of turnover. This study collected data from 306 male nurses on a national scale with structured questionnaires measuring job opportunity, kinship responsibility, positive emotion, work autonomy, role conflict, work satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 22.0 program and AMOS 20.0 program. Results: As the outcomes satisfied the recommended level, the hypothetical model appeared to fit the data. Twenty-seven of the 38 hypotheses selected for the hypothetical model were statistically significant. 54.2% of turnover intention was explained by job opportunity, kinship responsibility, positive emotion, work autonomy, role conflict, work satisfaction and organizational commitment. Conclusion: The hypothetical model of this study was confirmed to be adequate in explaining and predicting male nurses' turnover intention. Findings from this study can be used to design appropriate strategies to decrease the male nurse's turnover intention.
Purpose: This study was designed to identify the prediction factors that influence nurses' organizational commitment. Method: The sample of this study consisted of 526 full-time nurses randomly picked at 19 general hospitals in Korea. The data was analyzed by computer using SPSS 15.0 for Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Result: 1) According to general characteristics, nurses' organizational commitment levels among the sample were significantly different in age, religion, social status, marital status, clinical career, and department satisfaction. 2) Level of nurses' organizational commitment was average 2.70, job satisfaction 2.91, burnout 3.03, empowerment 3.36, autonomy 2.93, and self-efficacy 3.51. 3) Nurses' organizational commitment had significant positive correlations with job satisfaction, empowerment, self-regulation, social support, self-efficacy, clinical career, and personnel movement experience. On the other hand, it had significant negative correlations with occupational stress, burnout, and age. 4) The prediction factors which influence Nurses' organizational commitment were job satisfaction($\beta$=.405), burnout($\beta$=-.282), self-regulation($\beta$=.171), clinical career($\beta$=.135). These factors were approximately 49.6% reliable in explaining nurses' organizational commitment. Conclusion: These results can be used to develop hospitals' management strategies for increasing organizational commitment effectiveness and nursing productivity.
