The impact stress and wave propagation of graphite/epoxy and glass/epoxy laminates subjected to the transverse low-velocity impact of steel balls are investigated theoretically. A plate finite element model based on Whitney and Pagano's theory for the analysis of heterogeneous and anisotropic plates taking into account of the transverse shear deformation is used for the theoretical investigation. This model is in conjuction with static contact laws. The basic element is a four-node quadrilateral with the five degrees-of-freedom per node. The reduced integration technique is used for shear locking associated with low-order function in application to thin plates. These two materials are composed of [0.deg./45.deg./0.deg./-45.deg./0.deg.]$_{2S}$ and [90.deg./45.deg./90.deg./-45.deg./90.deg.]$_{2S}$ stacking sequences and have clamped-clamped boundary conditions. Finally, the present results are compared with an existing solution and wave propagation theory and then impact stress and wave propagation phenomena are investigated.gated.

A series of test was performed by measuring the failure strength and the failure mode of fiber reinforced composite laminates joint containing two holes in Series or Parallel. $[0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}]_s$ laminate with W/d(Side distance ratio) 4.0 and E/d(Edge distance ratio) 3.0 has the full bearing strength and are preferable in case of the good efficiency in two series hole. Comparisons were made between testing results and predicting values of the FEM model. Good agreements were fecund between them except the case of $E/d=2{\sim}3$. In the case of $G_h{\geq}3.0d$ and $G_v{\geq}3.0d$ since the interaction coefficients between two parallel holes and between two series holes were small, holes can be treated as independent. The Acoustic Emission(AE) and SEM method were utilized to find out the initial defects, damage and the fracture mechanism.
The use of advanced composite materials in main structures of military and civil aircraft has been increased rapidly because of their considerable metals in high specific strength and stiffness. However, the mechanical properties of composite materials may severely degrade in the presence of damage. Especially, the high-velocity impact such as a hailstorm, and a small piece of tire or stone during high taxing, can cause considerable damage to the structures and sub-system in spite of a very small mass. However, it is not easy to detect the damage in composite plates using a single sensor or any conventional methods. In this paper, the PVDF sensors and AE sensors were used for monitoring high-velocity impact damage initiation and propagation in composite laminates. The WT(wavelet transform) is used to decompose the sensor signals. In the PVDF sensor and AE sensor signal analysis, amounts of high-frequency signals are increased when the impact energy is increased. PVDF sensor and AE sensor signal appeared similar results. This study shows how various sensing techniques can be used to characterize high-velocity impact damage of advanced composite laminates.
This paper presents the fabrication and 3-point flexion testing of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite face/aluminum honeycomb core sandwich panels. Specimen sandwich panels were fabricated with three honeycomb types (3.18 mm, 4.76 mm, and 6.35 mm cell size) and three panel radii (flat, r = 1.6 m, r = 1.3 m). The curved sandwiches were fabricated normally with the core in the W-direction. The tensile mechanical properties of the CFRP $2{\times}2$ twill fabric face laminate were evaluated (modulus, strength, Poisson's ratio). The measured values are comparable to other CFRP fabric laminates. The flat sandwich 3-point flexion test core shear strength results were 11-30% lower than the manufacturer published data; the test set-up used may be the cause. With a limited sample size, the 1.3 meter panel curvature appeared to cause a 0.8-3.8% reduction in ultimate core shear strength compared to a flat panel.

This paper describes the optimum design of bolt locations for metal joint parts of railway bogie frame made of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite and PVC foam core. The optimum design analysis was done by sub-problem approximation method using Ansys Parameter Design Language(APDL). The sub-modeling method was introduced to conduct the detailed recalculation for the only target parts and reduce calculating time. The structural analysis for composite bogie frame was performed according to JIS E 4207. The results showed that the optimum design analysis using sub-modeling method was able to obtain faster and more precise results than that of the entire model by the control of mesh size for the target parts, and the maximum Von-Mises stress has been reduced in comparison with its original dimensions due to the optimum design of bolt locations.
This paper presents the dynamic stability study of laminated composite plates with different force combinations and aspect ratios. Optimum non-diverging stacking is obtained for certain loading combination and aspect ratio. In addition, the stability force is maximized for a definite operating frequency. A dynamic version of the principle of virtual work for laminated composites is used to obtain force-frequency relation. Since dynamic stiffness governs the divergence or flutter, an efficient optimization method is necessary for the response functional and the relevant constraints. In this way, a model based on the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is proposed to search for the proper stacking. The ACO algorithm is used since it treats with large number of dynamic stability parameters. Governing equations are formulated using classic laminate theory (CLT) and von-Karman plate technique. Load-frequency relations are explicitly obtained for fundamental and secondary flutter modes of simply supported composite plate with arbitrary aspect ratio, stacking and boundary load, which are used in optimization process. Obtained results are compared with the finite element method results for validity and accuracy convince. Results revealed that the optimum stacking with stable dynamic response and maximum critical load is in angle-ply mode with almost near-unidirectional fiber orientations for fundamental flutter mode. In addition, short plates behave better than long plates in combined axial-shear load case regarding stable oscillation. The interaction of uniaxial and shear forces intensifies the instability in long plates than short ones which needs low-angle layup orientations to provide required dynamic stiffness. However, a combination of angle-ply and cross-ply stacking with a near-square aspect ratio is appropriate for the composite plate regarding secondary flutter mode.
As aerospace industry has been activated recently, it is required to commercialize composite analysis software. Until now, commercial software has been mainly used for analyzing composites, but it has been difficult to use due to high price and limited functions. In order to solve this problem, automatic analysis software for both in-plane and corner radius strength, which are all made on-line and generalized, has recently been developed. However, these have the disadvantage that they can not be analyzed simultaneously with multiple failure criteria. In this paper, we propose a method to greatly improve the processing speed while simultaneously handling the analysis of multiple failure criteria using a parallel processing platform that only works with a GPU equipped with a CUDA core. We have obtained satisfactory results when the analysis speed is experimented on the vast structure data.
In this paper, a progressive failure analysis method was developed using the Hashin failure criterion and crack band model. Using the failure criterion, the failure initiation was evaluated. If the failure initiation is occurred, the damage variables at each failure modes (fiber tension & compression, matrix tension & compression) was calculated according to linear softening degradation behavior and the variables are used to derive the damaged stiffness matrix. The damaged stiffness matrix is reflected to damaged material and the progressive failure analysis is continued until the damage variables to be 1 that complete failure of material. A series of processes were performed using FE commercial code ABAQUS with user defined material subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the proposed progressive failure model, the experimental results of open hole composite laminate tests was compared with numerical result. Using digital image correlation system, the strain behavior also was compared. The proposed numerical results were coincided well with the experimental results.

In this paper, the thickness of a multilayer PCB was predicted through an empirical formulation based on the physical properties of the prepreg used in multilayer PCB. Since the thickness of prepreg reduction when manufacturing a PCB due to the physical properties and copper foil residual rate, it is necessary to accurately predict the thickness of the PCB through the thickness empirical formulation. To determine the density of the prepreg, the mass and thickness of the prepreg were measured. To manufacture the CCL, the prepreg and copper foil were laminated using a hot press machine, and the thickness was measured using a microscope and micrometer. An 8-layerd PCB was designed with different circuit densities to measure the change in the thickness with the copper foil residual ratio, and the proposed empirical formulation was verified by comparing the measured thickness with the value obtained using the empirical formulation. As a result, the errors for the CCL and multilayer PCB were 2.56% and 4.48%, respectively, which demonstrated the reliability of the empirical formulation.
Composite materials have been used in aerospace industry and many applications because of many advantages such as specific strength and stiffness and corrosion resistance etc. However, it is vulnerable to impacts, these impact lead to formation of cracks in composite laminate and failure of structures. In this paper, we analyzed Mode I fracture toughness of Carbon/Epoxy laminates using acoustic emission signal. DCB test was carried out to analyze Mode I failure characterization of Carbon/Epoxy laminates, and AE sensor was attached to measure AE signal induced by failure of specimen. Fracture toughness was calculated using cumulative AE energy and measured crack length using camera. The calculated fracture toughness was applied in FE model and the result of FE analysis compared with DCB test results. The results show good agreement with between FEM and DCB test results.
