  • In conservation treatment lacquer has been used variously as a restoration material. However, dealing with Lacquer is very difficult as it dried in high humidity that can be harmful to the base materials. Also being natural varnish, dried lacquer layer is very different from the drying condition and the quality of the lacquer. These make difficult to predict the result of drying lacquer. In this study, using the humidity control machine, firstly, the main contents of the two different type of lacquer was experimented. And these lacquers was cured in various conditions. The duration time was checked until totally hardened. After that, obtained lacquer layers was analyzed to understand optical properties. Therefore, this study made a result about the relationship between characteristics of lacquer layer and the hardening condition. As a result, duration time of the Korean lacquer drying which has average 13.4% more urushiol than the Chinese lacquer is recorded a twice or triple decrease over it of the Chinese one. And, in all types of lacquer, the higher humidity makes the faster a pace of lacquer dried. In same lacquer, the shorter the duration time of drying lacquer is much darker and glossier. However, gloss deteriorated in saturated humidity. In humidity lower than RH 70%, lacquer is not hardened in 336 hours. When the layer totally cured through long period more than 30 days, the drying lacquer is appeared high brightness and almost transparent. Thus, in lower than RH 70%, it is hard to obtain durable layer.

  • In order to study for the production techniques and the materials of using in Korean Lacquer Antiques, we examined the section structure by SEM and Microscope, the qualitative analysis of lacquer layer by XRF and XRD, the qualitative analysis of Golhae layer by XRF and XRD, the qualitative analysis of Golhae by EDS on the locquer-wares which was excavated from Anapchi Pond Site in Kyungju and Miruksa Temple Site in Iksan. In the lacquer-wares excavated from Anapchi Pond Site, the lacuqer-wares layers made by a cloth attached on the surface of wooden vessel and Golhae-a mixture of clay and lacquer-covered on the cloth and finally finished with the red lacqure, being mixed with pure mercury sulfide(HgS) and lacquer. And raw materials of Golhae made of clay. The lacquer-wares excavated from Miruksa Temple Site in Iksan, we presumed that the lacquer-wares used fine born grains in place of clay for the raw materials of Golhae. Expecially in case of black lacquer-tray, we found that lacquer put on the surface of wooden vessel without cloth attaching and Golhae covering and the production of wooden vessel was used power-driven machine.

  • We perform an experiment on lacquer formation with simple test device. The anti-lacquer is one of important issues to increase durability, and to improve performance in the engines because the lacquer formation cause sticking of fuel injection pump, scuffing of cylinder liners, and increase of lubricant oil consumption in the marine diesel engines. We suggest this simple test in order to save enormous experimental cost in marine diesel engines, and in order to have ease in performing the various tests. The influences of the Base Number (BN) of lubricant oils and the sulfur content of fuel oils in the formation of lacquer are investigated. In order to investigate physical and chemical properties of lacquer, we perform a variety of tests such as, visual inspection, EDS. In addition, we investigate adhesion of lacquer by pull-off test quantitatively, and perform dissolution test with dilute sulfuric acid.

  • This report is a result of investigating the materials and techniques of the lacquer ware excavated from Hwangnamdaechong Tomb known as an old tomb in the Gyeongju maximum district. First, the fragment of lacquer ware was classified by the shape of it. Next, the thin section of lacquer film (all sides about 2mm) was made based on the result. Then they were observed under the microscope, and classified the kind of the foundation mixture and the applied structure. It is a result as follows. 1 The bone dust was mixed by the foundation of the made of cloth-body lacquer ware such as eared lacquer cup, lacquer bowl, and the lacquer rectangular containers excavated from the south tomb. 2 Eared lacquer cup and lacquer bowl, and rectangular box excavated from south and north tomb had the possibility they were the set of articles partially of tableware and the cosmetic box. 3 There is a difference in the quality of burial lacquer ware between in south tomb and north tomb. A lot of highlevel lacquer ware such as eared lacquer cup, lacquer bowl and the rectangular lacquer containers were discovered from the south tomb. 4 Many of containers where animal and bird had been drawn on the black lacquered ground excavated from north tomb were wooden bath.

  • Two experiments were conducted to see the effects of lacquer meal (Rhus verniciflua) on layer performance. In Exp. 1, seventy-two Hy-Line brown layers, 46 wk of age were fed 0, 1.5% and 3.0% lacquer added diets for 6 weeks. Diets contained 2,650 kcal/kg ME and 16.50% CP. In Exp. 2, high-energy diets were fed to 72 Hy-line brown layers of 46 wk age for 6 wk. The diets were: control (3,000 kcal/kg ME and 16.50% CP); T1 and T2 contained 1.5 and 3.0% lacquer respectively, in addition to high energy levels. Each treatment had four replicates with 6 birds each in both the experiments. During Exp.1, there was no effect on average daily feed intake, egg production and feed efficiency, however, egg weight was linearly (p=0.0128) decreased with the addition of lacquer in diets. The egg quality parameters measured at bi-weekly intervals did not reveal any particular trend. In Exp 2., high-energy diets have decreased the feed intake and egg production in all groups. However, feeding lacquer at 1.5% increased the egg production by 9% than control. The yolk fat content was increased due to treatments showing quadratic trend (p=0.0683). The liver fat content was decreased by 40-43% than control in lacquer added diets. Except palmitic, oleic and arachidonic acids, some yolk fatty acids showed a linear decreasing trend in lacquer diets. The serum triglycerides and total cholesterol levels were not influenced with lacquer in the diets; however, the serum glucose level was linearly decreased with the addition of lacquer. In conclusion, lacquer meal supplementation significantly affected the performance of layers fed high-energy diets.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the correlation and regression analysis between the factors - diameter, hight and crown width - and collection amount of Rhus lacquer by the sex of Rhus verniciflua. The relationship between the diameter and the collection amount of the lacquer by the sex of the lacquer tree indicated that, for both of the male and the female, the lacquer amount was likely to increase as the diameter got larger. In general, the male trees tended towards the higher amount of the lacquer than the female. The relationship between the crown width and the collection amount of the lacquer by the sex showed little difference. As the crown became wider, however, the lacquer amount showed the increasing trend. The regression analysis by the sex of the tree indicated that the major factors of the female had larger influence on the lacquer amount than those of the male. The no differences of statistical significance were found among the diameter, the height, the crown width, and the lacquer amount.

  • Lacquer is one of the most widely used natural resin in East Asia since Neolithic Age. As a major ingredient of lacquerware, lacquer is waterproof, insect-proof and rot-proof to be durable and anti-abrasion, generally utilized for mainly painting purpose. According to lacquerware excavated from several sites of Japan and China, lacquerware seems to appear in Neolithic Age. On the other hand in case of excavation research in Korea, lacquerwares are found after the Bronze Age. The initial purpose of lacquer is estimated to be adhesive, regarding the literatures mentioning bitumen(Yeoksceong ), animal glue(Kyeo) and egg alumen(Nanbaek). Especially piece of jar coffin unearthed in Pyeongtaek Daechu-ri site had trace of restoration by lacquer and hemp as an evidence of lacquer for adhesion in Pre-Three Kingdoms period. Since then a trend to restore the broken ceramics with lacquer and decorate with golden foil lasted especially in Joseon Dynasty. In the field of gold plated lacquer method, mother-of-pearl inlaying technique for lacquerware and restoration of buildings, lacquer is still used as adhesive. Due to matter of reversibility lacquer is being avoided for conservation and restoration of cultural heritage. Lacquer as a traditional material for adhesive since ancient times, however, has advantage in adhesion strength and durability. Because synthetic resin adhesive has problem of emission of volatile organic compounds and aging over time, lacquer receives attention recently. On the contrary, by combination adhesive from mixing lacquer and animal glue, already proved the possibility of applicability and chemical modification. A research to utilize lacquer as modern paint or functional material is also conducted continuously also in China and Japan. To put traditional material into practical use and modernize, chemical research from the molecular level of the lacquer is necessary in the near future.

  • The traditional culture, which is a historical product possessed by each country, represents the competitiveness of the country and becomes a national resource. Raw lacquer has a very long history and tradition in China. Lacquer, which is the basic material of Raw lacquer. Also it is a natural paint which has the functions of preservation, insectproof and waterproof used from ancient times in Asia, not only in China but also in Korea and Japan. Such Raw lacquer using lacquer has a long history and it is becomes to a tradition. On the other hand, Its value and meaning are being faded by oilpaintings and watercolors. Much effort and research are needed to become more popular. I would like to introduce the lacquering technique in illustration as one way. There are a lots of expression techniques in the present illustration, but lacquer expression is rarely seen. In the illustration, lacquering technique is a modern reinterpretation of traditional culture by combining modern technology with traditional culture. In this paper, a Raw lacquer with a long tradition of soul is informed to the public and it is a way to bring attention to the beauty of lacquer and reproduce the original expression technique as an illustration to enhance the understanding of traditional culture, I hope that Raw lacquer will be used in the field.
