This study investigates cargo management issues in the shipbuilding and marine equipment industry. Problems are analyzed concerning the absence of information about exact cargo location and condition, damage, loss, replacement, and transportation delays during the import and export process. Then, improvements are proposed to solve these problems. To illustrate, real time information about the status and location of cargo should be communicated between import/export and logistics companies to facilitate material logistics for shipbuilding & marine equipment. In addition, a standard cargo classification and recognition system should be established to reduce delivery delays and mistakes, so then enhancing logistical efficiency. Moreover, it is also necessary to nurture professional shipbuilding & marine equipment forwarders to strengthen their expertise with professional education and training.
The variation of marine accidents and ship's insurances is to be the measurement of assessment concerned effect of importing ISM Code because each kind of ship accident's expenses and compensation for the loss have an effect on the ship's insurance and P&I insurance. Therefore in this study, we had grasped the accomplishment of importing ISM Code, using analysis of the variation of marine accidents and ship's insurances in domestic shipping companies from one year ago to 8 years after importing ISM Code. As the result of analysis, compared with the period of a year before carrying out ISM Code, marine accidents were showed a decrease of about 14.4% at 8th year of importing ISM Code. Also, the insurance had tended downward every year.
Maritime security incidents by pirates and by terrorists increase, but maritime incidents investigation models are limited to figure out the maritime security incidents. This paper provides the analysis model for maritime security incidents. To develop this analysis model, this categorizes five threat factors, the ship, the cargo type, port system, human factor, information flow system, makes the risk assessment matrix to quantify the risk related to threat factors and classifies four priority categories of risk assessment matrix. Also, this model makes from the frameworks which include a variety of security initiatives implementing in stakeholder levels like international organizations, individual governments, shipping companies, and the ship. Therefore, this paper develops the Analysis for Maritime Security Management model based on various security initiatives responding to the stakeholder levels of maritime security management and top-bottom/bottom-up decision trees, and shows the validity through verifying the real maritime security incident of M/V Petro Ranger.
This study shows how the logistics capability of container terminal impacts with service quality and customer response. Result of this study would be utilized in marketing strategy for container terminal. Sample design is based on shipping companies which are registered in Korea Shipowners' Association and Korea Shipmanagers' Association from Dec. 5 through 23 in 2011. And total of 243 questionnaires are collected through a personal visit. The result of empirical analysis, management capability of logistics capability factor which have an effect on service quality and customer response is the biggest influence to them. At the same time, Sympathy of service quality factor which have an effect on customer response is the biggest influence to it. In North-East Asia, Port traffic in Asia-North America sea route has been rapidly increasing due to economic growth in China and ASEAN. Furthermore, the major shipping companies directly call at northern chinese ports like Qingdao, Dalian and Tianjin without passing through Korean ports on Asia-North America sea route. To acquire a port traffic and develop a hub port, governments in North-East Asia have intensively invested in the development of port. Therefore, Busan new port and Gwangyang port have been developed in Korea. According to the medium-long term development planning, the port should give a enormous budget investment for the port facilities construction. So the inaccurate estimation may lead to the unreasonable port development policy. Firstly, based on the estimation of Chiang Bong-Gyu & Yang Hang Jin(2005), this study gave a comparison with the estimation of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries(2001) and OSC/Glori(2005). Secondly, taking into account the influence factors for port traffic, this study made an estimation of port traffic for Busan new port. On the basis of this estimation, this study is compared with the estimation of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries(2001) and OSC/Glori(2005). In conclusion, in case of the development of Busan new port, based on the estimation of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries(2001), this study should the high possibility that the Busan new port will be serious lack of the port facilities in the year of 2011. And according to the OSC/Glori(2005)'s estimation result, there is a lack of the port facilities, though we have modified the port investment plan.

In this study, a Vessel Shore Report Management System (VSRMS) is developed for the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Maritime Service Portfolio (MSP) Number 8, which comprises vessel shore reporting. Several documents have to be completed before the arrival/departure of a vessel at a port, as each national port has its own reporting format and data. The present vessel reporting system is inefficient, time-consuming, and involves excessive paperwork, which results in duplications and errors. To solve this problem, in this study, the vessel reporting formats and data contents of various national ports are investigated, as at present, the reporting documents required by the current IMO standard includes insufficient information which is requested by national ports. Initially, the vessel reporting information of various national ports are collected and analyzed. Subsequently, a database structure for managing vessel reporting data for ports worldwide is devised. To make the transfer of data and the exchange of information of vessel reports much more reliable, efficient, and paper-free, VSRMS, which is a software application for the simplification and facilitation of vessel report formalities, is developed. This application is developed using the latest Microsoft C#.Net Programming Language in the Microsoft Visual Studio framework 4.5. It provides a user interface and a backend MySQL server used for database management. SAP Crystal Reports 2013 is used for designing and generating vessel reports in the original report formats. The VSRMS can facilitate vessel reporting and improve data accuracy through the reduction of input data, efficient data exchange, and reduction of the cost of communication. Adoption of the VSRMS will allow the vessel shore reporting system to be automated, resulting in enhanced work efficiency for shipping companies. Based on this information system and architecture, the consensus of various international organizations, such as the IMO, the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), the Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents (FONASBA), and the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), is required so that vessel reporting is standardized internationally.
Recently, shipping operators have been making efforts to reduce the fuel cost in various ways, such as trim optimization and bulb re-design. Furthermore, IMO restricts the hydro-dioxide emissions to the environment based on the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index), EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator), and SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan). In particular, ship speed is one of the most important factors for calculating the EEDI, which is based on methods suggested by ITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) or ISO (International Standardization Organization). Many shipbuilding companies in Korea have carried out speed trials around the Korea Straits. However, the conditions for these speed trials have not been exactly the same as those for model tests. Therefore, a ship’s speed is corrected by measured environmental data such as the seawater temperature, density, wind, waves, swell, drift, and rudder angle to match the conditions of the model tests. In this study, fundamental research was performed to evaluate the ship resistance performance due to changes in the water temperature and salinity, comparing the ISO method and numerical simulation. A numerical simulation of a KCS (KRISO Container ship) with a free-surface was performed using the commercial software Star-CCM+ under three conditions that were assumed based on the water temperature and salinity data in the Korea Straits. In the simulation results, the resistance increased under low water temperature & high salinity conditions, and it decreased under high water temperature & low salinity conditions. In addition, the ISO method showed the same result as the simulation.
Due to the continuous increasement of the container cargoes, each container port market has been growing as well. Moreover, the competition among container terminal operators located in the same port is also growing in order to attract more container cargoes. This paper looked into the market structures, market conducts and market performances of container ports in Busan and Shanghai. The index which has been most widely used to measure market structure, the Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI), is computed by squaring each supplier's market share, then adding the squared shares. This paper estimated the market performance as profitability (PCM, ROA), growth (total TEU, rate of the increasement of TEU) and examined the effects of the HHI on the profitability and growth in a container terminal operators in Korea and China. The major findings of this study is that the market structure has effects on market performance in Busan port (total TEU) and Shanghai port (PCM, ROA and total TEU). As a result of analysing this study, market structure has an effect on market performance in Busan and Shanghai port, but the power of influence can be changed by market concentration index and various market conduct of companies.
Recently, it becomes important for container ports to gain competitiveness through service differentiation strategies. These strategies require an objective evaluation on consumer needs. For that reason, this study aims at developing the scale and measurement methods for service quality. Container shipping companies calling at Busan are targeted for the empirical analyses. The measurement items are presented for the services that they are provided from entry into a port to departure from a port. Exploratory factor analysis and validity analysis are done to derive a service quality scale from entry to departure. The result of regression analysis implies that the service quality scale is useful to increase customer satisfaction and to establish managerial strategies.
Though, the disasters of shipboard crew have many types and aspects, most of them are caused by human elements, and the management and the regulations for the crew safety are other elements for the crew disaster. Accordingly, the analysis of the consciousness and understandings on crew's safety management system is one of the important parts to reduce the accident. Therefore, this study made up the questionnaire and assorted the respond of shipping companies, ship's officers and engineers including captains to our questionaries, and analyzed the results to pick out and find their consciousness on the crew disaster. And also, this study is to make proposals to prevent and reduce the accident.
